Some friends and i are planning on going to South Carolina for a few days this week and we are wondering what sort of things there are to do. We are open to all suggestions however none of us are over 21 so take that into consideration. Thanks all
There's plenty to do in Myrtle Beach, all you have to do is drive down the strip and you'll run into a days worth of stuff.
If you're going to be near Charleston, there's always tours and such, or just walking thorugh the main part of town and soaking up the history. They also have a good open-air market to browse through. And there's always the beach.
If you're going to be in Columbia, Charlotte, NC is only an hour drive or so, and there is plenty to do there. There's a paramount park (Carowinds) on the NC/SC boarder on I-77, but I don't know if it's open yet.
And if you're going to be around Greenville/Spartenburg, Christ help you because Charlotte's going to be the nearest anything.
And if you're going to be around Hilton Head, there is golfing, there is the beach, and that's about all I remember from my visit there 4-5 years ago.
Wow, I'm gonna be down there in a few days too. Weird.
There's tons of stuff in Charleston especially if you're into history. Fort Sumter was pretty cool, but I haven't been in years. The city is full of historical houses, and there's a lot of shopping downtown.
There's also the aquarium, which is really awesome (and so much cooler than the Denver one). There's an IMAX next door to it as well.
The beach is great, I usually go to Isle of Palms or Folly Beach. Also, while not really a tourist attraction, the new bridge is pretty awesome. You can say you've seen the longest cable-stay bridge in the western hemisphere.
I can't really help you on anywhere else but the lowcountry though. I really love this city. It's a beautiful place, and (no offense) the people are usually more polite than I've encountered anywhere else. Enjoy your stay.
I think the others have covered it all pretty well, but I'd like to note that the reason Nucsh can't think of much to do in Hilton Head besides play golf and go to the beach is because there's actually nothing else to do there, unless you feel like hopping the gate of some neighbourhood and checking out the houses (I wouldn't suggest it, but whatever floats your boat).
I live just outside of Charleston and I still haven't seen everything there is to see here. Charleston has been a major U.S. port since the mid-1700s and was a major cultural center from about that time until the Civil War, so I'd definitely check it out if that interests you at all. Either way, the atmosphere of the historic portion of the city is unlike any other in the South, so check it out. Oh, and try some shrimp and grits while you're there... you can get it just about anywhere, but I like Bubba Gump's on Market Street.
I haven't been in Columbia very much, but the aquarium should definitely be on your list of sites to see there. I know there are some incredible restaurants there (some mom and pop place downtown has won several national awards for their burgers). If you're not from the Deep South and you want to get some laughs/bewildered expressions from your friends, go check out the decor at Maurice's Barbeque. I can't say much else about Columbia, but most people seem to view Columbia as a pit stop between Charleston, Charlotte and Atlanta. *shrug*
Oh, and if you're a basketball fan, there's an NIT game on Wednesday night at Clemson University. Clemson will be playing Syracuse in the quartnerfinals, so expect a lot of orange if you decide to check it out.
Hey thanks guys those were exactly the things we were looking for. We dont know for sure where we will be. We are just driving down there so thats why i didnt list a specific spot.
I recently moved to Columbia and find it hilarious how everyone always mentions that Charlotte is close by without ever actually talking about Columbia. But there's a good reason because if you don't go to school here, then it is fairly boring.
Downtown is basically the University campus. There's a spot called five points where a lot of bars and coffee shops and locally owned restaurants are. Across the bridge, on the other side of the campus, are a few more coffee shops and bars. If you go to northeast Columbia, you'll run into all the suburban stuff like the mall and Best Buy and that sort of thing. There's also a skate park somewhere around here, but I don't know where it is.
You could also go check out the state capitol building and such too, since Columbia is the capital. There's a lot of Greek/Etruscan/Roman inspired architecture.

I've never been in one, but people tell me there's a lot of racist shit in there.
Wow, I'm visiting South Carolina right now. I have to cast a second vote for Folly beach, I was just there today and it was amazing. Huge, clean, a giant pier thing to walk down, it was quite nice. We also hit up the Auduhbon (sp?) swamp, that was very picturesque (apparently you can sometimes see alligators there, we weren't that lucky). It's right outside of Charleston, so not that far from Folly Beach.

There are a few venues here if you want to go to a show sometime. Oh, also the campus radio station I "work" at (WUSC 90.5 FM) has a 30 mile radius, so you can pick it up all over Columbia if you're into independent/non top 40 music.
