Alright, all Skylanders gear posted to Craigslist and it seems Pokemon is my new Skylanders.
Is there any point to preorder? I should be able to just walk into a store and get this right?
Also, am I sabotaging myself by wanting a whole team of fighting type pokemons? They seem to be the ones I gravitate towards. That Hawlucha is really my cup of tea, but boy does she have a serious cameltoe problem.
For the single player you might have some frustrating moments but it should be manageable assuming you make sure to teach them some non-fighting moves. In competitive-multi it would be a terribad idea.
Thanks for the tip. I really know nothing of the Pokemon metagame and I'd really like to get into competative battles. I've been entrenched in Street Fighter 4 meta for several years now, but I'm getting out of it. I need something to replace that though, this seems like a good place to go, especially if I can play with my son.

Are most competitive teams a little bit of everything as far as types goes or is there an advantage to focusing on maybe just one or a few in some cases?

Varied.
You don't want to get caught with your pants down by one opposing pokemon that can slaughter half your team.

Often, but not always. It's important to have type coverage for resistances and super effective attacks. How many of my team can be super effective against a dragon? Or Fighting? etc. And on the flip side, what do I if Metagross comes out and spams earthquake? Can your team deal with that?
Then there are things like hail teams or sandstorm teams that use a large number of water/ice/rock/ground types.

I've bought every pokemon game (except RBY) on release date and have never had an issue. You should be able to pick it up anywhere. Also, Fighting is a fantastic type and there's always a way around ghost/flying/poison types. If you're just playing for funsies there's no reason that you can't go mono-fighting.
I need to call up my local gamestop and ask about a midnight release, they did one for BW but I think they skipped BW2...
Does anyone know when a 24 hour store like Walmart will put the game out on the shelves?
2 versions is mostly a very old marketing trick. The only tangible difference is there are a handful of pokemon that are exclusive to each version, including the legendary mascots on the covers.

Depends on your team strategy. My old Gen IV team had three water pokemon: Swampert, Gyarados and Starmie. Swampert took electric, Gyarados took grass and bug, Starmie rapid spun hazards and revenge killed.
Nowadays, competitive teams revolve around weather. Weather has a lot of benefits for each of them (hail may be the weakest), which make the teams very focused. You generally want to kill opposing weather starters so that yours will reign supreme.
Hopefully, weather won't influence Gen VI as much. As good as weather effects are, it gets boring after a while.

Is there just one of the legendaries in the whole game? Or could I capture a Xerneas and my friend captures the Yveltal and he can we can trade them back and fourth and then catch another one?
Also, is there multiple saves per cartridge? I'd like to play both a male and female character to see all the dress-up options.

yes you can trade them, no you can't catch another one on that file, and it's always been that it's only only save file per game.

You might be able to get both legendaries on one cart
Wow, Serebii and NeoGAF are exploding over this. Apparently there are 2 leakers basically livestreaming the game; one on the imageboard that must not be named, and one on Youtube.
(The game was released early in Canada.)

Apparently you can trade for a Farfetch'd early on.
Then I imagine when it hits level 16, plays the evolution screen but then stops midway as a video of the Gamefreak staff laughing at us plays.

For Walmart I can usually just walk in at midnight and ask the electronics clerk to go get me one. For something as big as Pokemon they may already have it in a box behind the counter waiting to be stocked though.

I still can't believe facial hair is actually a thing.
Ten year old protagonist is going to save the world with a really manly lumberjack beard.
More exclusive stones? Goddamnit! This means that out of a set of 3 + 3, you get 1. I am hoping that the other stones can be obtained in other ways.
Can you make Drought and Solar Power interact via Mega somehow?
Professor Newguy's eyes look a bit Oaky to me.
Show me all of the pretty princess dressup so that I can choose a sex.
OK quick backstory; I'm 32, been playing Nintendo since 1986, have owned several Gameboys in my time, and have NEVER played a Pokémon game. I'd like to change that with X and Y. Is there anything I should know beforehand? I did sell my 3DS early this year but I'm going to get the X and Y themed 3DS XL. I thought about getting a 2DS but I want the bigger screen.
What you need to know is that if you buy pokeballs in a batch of ten, you get a free pokeball, and that Fresh Water usually heals most per .
About team-composition: You could always use Fighting-types with different secondary types for variety.
With whatever pokemon you choose at the beginning, can you still catch the other ones in the wild? I was thinking of going Chespin and then Squirtle, but I'd still like a Froake. If I chose Squirtle could I capture a Bulbasaur?

Not all OU teams nowadays revolve around weather, but there are a good chunk of them.
So if anyone is interested i have two feebas if anyone wants. A- Quirky, 31,27,31,19,31,13
B- careful, 31,27,31,25,9,15.
Also if anyone has any good iv pokes in the Pupitar line, Elektross line, and Roselia Line. Though honestly i will take any female roselia at this point.
you usually don't run into starters in the wild, no
maybe there's a game where you do? I forget.
Starters are easy to trade with random people.
Yes. For those who might be coming into this one fairly new to the series, you can just breed pokemon you were given or got in special circumstances to get more of them, starters are super easy to get in that regard.
All you pretty much have to do is breed two of yours, put them on the Global Trade System (wi fi feature), requesting both of the starters you don't have and you'll get it fairly quickly.
You have one they don't and vice versa, very easy trade off.

I'm sort of interested in this since I have a 3DS.
What's the deal with 2 versions of the game? Do I need both?
I need a pokemon primer, I guess.

You only need one, the differences between the two games are super minor. Pick the one with the cooler dude on the cover!
