a great nerd example is topher grace / toby mcguire. if you met dudes like this on the street you would not think twice about it but the celebrity factor instantly creates a huge obsession around people like this. i don't see the point. natalie portman sure she is hot and so the internet tells us pretty on the ball but who cares? at university smart attractive girls are a dime a dozen. so why idealize one person because family connections / random fate have played them into the celebrity circle and crowned them with influence and incredible wealth.

    so se, enlighten me.

why the fuck are people so dumb
Well in the case of Topher Grace and Tobey Maguire, I somewhat enjoy their work on That 70's Show/Spider-Man, so I would want to notice them in the street if I saw them. People who do likeable things will receive attention. And people are more inclined to give their attention to people in the entertainment industry, because they like entertainment and take more meaningful life-improvers for granted.

Btw, I don't know anything about Topher's or Tobey's personal lives except that I know Topher digs Star Wars. And I caught that bit of info on TV. It was a behind-the-scenes thingie for That 70's Show.

I can't really speak for Britney, Anna Nicole, etc.

with them i'm talking more about how suddenly they're all sexy and girls are all do me on this rainbow sort of deal. you have these average people who act in movies and suddenly they go from run of the mill to posterboys on magazines etc.

i've basically made a pact with myself that when i see famous people i would at the most let them know i enjoyed something they produced much like i would approach painter at an art exhibition to let him know you dig his stuff. basically just give them a heads up like a real person none of this 'hey could you sign this and take a picture with my friends holy shit you are just so awesome blaaaahhh.'

I think people perceive acting as a kind of confidence/sexiness. Also, they might associate the role that the actor plays to the actor... which, y'know, isn't an incredibly good association to make. EDIT: In terms of pure looks, though, I'd say pornstars deserve some more attention from most people... heh. It annoys me that magazines do their damn "100 Most Beautiful People" crap and it's all mainly actors from the Western world. Hey Asian women are hot, let's stick Lucy Liu in here since she's the only popular mainstream Asian woman in America and Europe. Let's ignore all the hot pornstars and hot random strangers out there.

I agree, though, obsession with celebrities goes kinda too far past my interests. I don't quite care who's dating who. But I guess people who are into dating/romance or something would be interested in observing others.
Plus, people like to be voyeurs. And, some people's lives are perceived as entertaining. Eh.

Also, if you're a celebrity, people will look to you for examples on a lot of things outside of your acting/drawing/musical/whatever expertise... your opinion on world issues, foods, etc. This isn't logical, but sometimes it's kinda justified and sometimes the celebrity happens to be intelligent or insightful or whatever...
Maybe people feel that there are disagreeable/dumbass people out there, so they look to people who have demonstrated talent and merit in some area to pay attention to. It's like uh, we all congregate here because most of us have grasped typing/grammatical styles that are higher than... your average reply on Youtube or your average review of a game on EB/Gamestop's sites.

I'm making a lot of generalizations here... but hey.

Definitely a big part of it is being successful or passionate about something, regardless of wealth this instantly makes a person more attractive to the opposite sex. When that activity makes you some very decent coin the desire is cranked up another notch for many people..

I think a lot of us look to celebrities (Opera, Dr. Phil, Bono) for cues on how to act because again we are socialized into certain systems. And these people are basically the archetypes for success, proper behaviour etc etc. Of course there are exceptions but even people like the Osbornes and Bam Margera cator to their own little subgroups with their own concrete socialization.

With bands this seems even more powerful and widespread; you have teens that become completely obsessed and infatuated with singers because they immediately buy into the image they are selling. Great example is Avril Lavigne who was originally a country singer and basically manufactured from the ground up by the studios to sell to that angsty rebellious demographic that they weren't hitting with the majority of their artists.

A lot of it has to do with the average person not looking below the surface of everything that goes on in society. They blindly accept what they are told as that is what they learned from their parents, teachers, etc and protect these values by embracing the media they have grown up around.

The past two years I'd roomed with a girl who was so locked into her television routine that it was a struggle to get her out with the rest of the group. Her parents had raised her in front of the tv and she revelled in it. Good looking girl too but just had no desire to go out on the weekends as she was so content to just cycle through her programs.

I think you could probably write a great paper on how the media is a modern gladiator ring of types which provides cheap and mindless entertainment that distracts people from how miserable most of their lives are to begin with. We see these movies where people are going through incredible adventures, experiences, connecting with new people etc and by living this entertainment we are appeased..

I make a pretty bitchin' Carbonara..

I start off frying up some bacon and onions, then when they're good and cooked I whip up some Philadelphia soft cheese with a couple of eggs then add that sauce to the bacon / onions. After a couple of minutes I stir in some spaghetti and tip it into a bowl.

Dead quick, dead easy and dead tasty..

because narian she is a perfect example of people going batshit crazy over some random lady. i'm sure she was super awesome but a lot of people are awesome. still the media and marketing agencies rode on the coattails of that whole pile of shit for years. of course it is sad when someone dies before their time but again this happens every day and the sheer amount of attention it received is insane. all the speculation, the books, all for some celebrity icon, albeit royalty, but still that is largely ornamental in the uk these days anyhow.

oh man everyone pulled a tldr on my thread starter here, it was actually pretty sympathetic towards celebrities. i'm not saying they are dumb fucks for existing in these circles as again its not until you're in the lifestyle that you realize how destructive it is and by that time you can't just drop out. it's this same media obsession that lead to diana's death at the hands of paparazzi. i never said it was the celebrity's fault for their situation but that it was a statement on socialization and our cultural values. all that you can really say is that most of them have a vague idea of what they are getting themselves into by entering the proverbial limelight.
