What should I do (tax liability in collections)

So, I'm an idiot. I actually posted about this approximately 51 weeks ago.

So I did my taxes very early last year. I got my W2s in the mail, went directly to my computer, clicked through TaxAct, and about 10 minutes later I was done. I didn't look closely at my W2s

Long story short - according to TaxAct I owed about $450 on my local (NYC) taxes. I didn't pay when I filed. A few days later, I get a letter from my old employer - they had to send a corrected W2 because they didn't put any local withholding on my W2.

I posted here and the advice was to file a tax amendment to my state. My actual liability is around $150.

I then completely forgot about all of this for about 330 days.

I got a letter around Christmas stating my tax liability is in collections and I need to pay immediately or face a tax warrant - which is not ideal. I called them and explained that I never filed the amendment. They said that because it is in collections, I should pay the full amount and file the amendment simultaneously and that New York will refund me the difference after they accept my amendment.

I agreed and promised to pay on 1/10 (tomorrow).

I have no problem doing that, but is that really the best way to go? Should I respond with a disagreement to the collection instead? Not sure what to do, exactly.

Also, how long does it take to have an assessment accepted? And how do I do it? Do I just print everything from TaxAct and send it to the NYS tax office with the new information? Not sure how to proceed.

i'll follow up on this tomorrow, Drez

i'd imagine what you should do is have a letter explaining why the delay and why your attached check is for the amount you calculated. include all work, copies of your amended W-2, and your old return. make sure on your letter to reference everything in your notice of deficiency - case number, social security number, etc.

that's an interest and penalty calculator if you'd like to send the check with the amended return. just print out the calculation and in your letter reference it.

as far as any additional reading, go here:

    that's the information for collections.

Not an accountant, but I know a few. Paying up front is probably not that big of a deal. My parents file amended returns all of the time, and the IRS is very good about returning your money. Not sure how the whole collections thing will complicate the issue, so maybe just do what tyrannus said since he actually knows how taxes work.
