So I know a couple of industry guys that can't see what's wrong with this. One even called it a brilliant marketing move, and said that it's no different than the Walking Dead Season 2 LE of the zombie bust with the screwdriver in the eye.
While I may not be offended I at least think that they should have fully known, expected, and seen the shitstorm that this would have caused coming. They should have known better.
I hadn't realize that the state of the worlds problems had gotten so calm that we could spend 13 pages debating a set of breasts.

If people knew better what they should, human history wouldn't be plagued with accidental and thoughtless bigotry. Of course they should know better, every sexist should know better, but they don't because that is why they are sexists.
We are not at a place where those people know better despite how much we want them to. Some of them may never know better. That is why we shake our heads, and boycott products, and sometimes yell and scream in frustration, so that they look at it and even if they're too stupid to self-reflect as to why we have this reaction they at least stop trotting their idiocy out into the world.

What it boils down to is that we aren't just arguing to seem smart or super politically correct, we just have a vested interest in the way women are portrayed in media- basic human empathy.

This I can agree with.
I was not planning on playing riptide, because I just finished the first game as part of my backlog challenge and was already turned off by the horrible cutscenes in the game including one where the two male player characters blame a female npc for getting raped. So yeah compared to the misogynistic piece of shit the first game was I barely raise my eyebrows to the torso.
Oh God, this was literally blocked out of my memory.
Yeah, that was ridiculous. I think one of them even said "leave the bitch to die" or something.
If I remember right, they were in the middle of Z town, and bringing her with them would have been dangerous to them. So while not very nice, it does make sense for the guy. Why put them in danger for anyone else?
Oh no, it was way worse than that.
Basically the girl (who keep in mind is no older than 16) was duped to help the bad guys because they convinced her they were desperate for food and sanctuary. Instead, they invade the area, you're forced to fend them off and eventually rescue the girl only to find her beaten and emotionally distraught. They don't outright say she was raped but it's practically spelled out.
So the two female characters in the group are consoling her while the two males are practically saying "you got what you deserved bitch" with their eyes, and literally saying it with their mouths.
In hindsight, it's worse than this silly statue nonsense, or at least indicative of the problem.
I skipped pretty much all the story, so I missed that.
That's incredibly troubling and doesn't make me much inclined towards benefit of the doubt.
Snuggles you missed the part where she stole the supplies and trucks and didn't listen to them saying running to help the enemy was a bad idea. They're not angry at her for getting raped, they're angry at her for STEALING from them and then running straight into the bad guy's headquarters to try and help out like a naive kid. You have to rescue her after telling her straight out "Dont do this" and she didn't listen.
That makes it worse to me since it almost seems like the male characters are victim blaming with their tone. Honestly, the game does a real shitty job at emotionally charged moments and ends up with either laughable schlock or offensive garbage.
Yeah, I don't get any of that at all from the scene. A jerk busts in, wonders what the hell her problem is for screwing them all over (because, believe it or not, context is definitely important, and she did a lot of betrayal stuff before that cutscene shows her cowering from a justifiably pissed off individual she betrayed), gets shoved out the door by the people who actually know, or at least are reasonably sure, what has happened, and then is pretty appropriately angry that the person in question betrayed them and nearly got them killed. And even knowing the person did that, the dude is still willing to get the person somewhere safe, thus willingly risking his own life for somebody who almost got them killed, even without knowing whether or not the girl had good reasons for what she did.
If I've just shot and beaten my way through an army of zombies to save somebody who betrayed be and nearly got me killed, I can't say I'd be especially bothered right that second if they seemed pretty upset about something but were otherwise not visibly injured.
Definitely shitty writing and poor voice acting, but that cutscene as "evidence" is stretching things pretty far to try to prove how the company is totally rotten instead of finding the actual individuals involved in this actual stupid thing with the statue. And there's definitely not any "she totally deserved getting raped!" there at all; all Sam B cares about is the fact that the girl turned on them and isn't trustworthy. As for the "accusation" from staring at her, there's no justifiable conclusion to take from that horribly rendered moment besides the fact that the devs had no idea how to properly animate... whatever expression they were going for their and ended up with "blank look" instead.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that they were insidious about the whole thing. It's just the product of awful writing and bad direction. It's not like that's the only scene used for emotional effect that honestly falls flat for me. The character in question is probably the worst narrative part about the game as they use her as the device for almost everything bad thing they can show. My real beef is they used that scene as the emotional impact. It is incredibly lazy and handled quite poorly. It's on par with a typical Lifetime movie.
Even so, I'd say something like implied rape is a subject that this particular studio should stay distinctly far away from. It's like, okay, you got a chance, but now we're going to put these back in the "well-adjusted mature adult" box, and you don't get them back until you've shown you're ready for them.

The thought process over who gave the green light to this CE seems staggering to me. Especially when it comes to Dead Island is a torso the only thing they could think of as a valued and memorable part of the game? They could have done like a diorama of the cover art. A statue of the crew circled up with make shift weapons. Heck...they could have just included a 12 inch zombie chick in a bikini and it would have been less offensive or strange. Looking at CE for games coming out you get:
Bioshock infinite - statue of their big iconic monstor
Dead Space 3 - 8 inch black marker, replica data tablets, med pack water bottle, and other in game themed collectibles.
Hell Duke Nukem Forever...a very sexist game came with a Duke Bust, Duke themed dice, Duke themed playing cards, comic book and such.
It just seems like the team in charge of their zombie bait edition could have maybe thrown a few more things against the wall to see what sticks.

Speaking as a scientist, this incredibly pressing issue prevented me from curing 3 diseases, rescuing a kitten that got stuck up a tree and curing cancer this afternoon.
How can you possibly live with yourself?
Of course in the actual real world my continued research into how bacteria bind onto medical devices continued with no major disruption. Funny that.
Also, the scene from Dead Island about Jin is not inherently victim blaming or trying to make light of rape at all. SamB is well demonstrated to be a sociopathic asshole most of the time and barges in ready for a fight - as she did steal their supplies and almost get them all killed. Purna and Xian are not as idiotic as Sam, quickly realizing that something horrible had happened and they try to comfort her.
The terrible direction and storytelling is on show here, but not that they are inherently victim blaming or trying to make light of her being raped (especially with the final statements from Xian in the cutscene).

I never saw the original poll, but I'll bet you five bucks the original poll item did say something like "large zombie statue" and the voters had something entirely different in mind than the awful hacks that came up with this trash.
Read through the whole thread just now (it jumped by 2 pages while I was reading - I was worried it would just grow forever and I would die reading it). Nice to see that aside from like 5 people, everyone here is unhappy. Hooray PA forums. Elsewhere on the Internet things aren't as cut and dry: I haven't even bothered with places like Kotaku and reddit which are probably chock full of people saying shit I wouldn't even want to copy to my clipboard, but I've included a small glimpse into some other places that are still great examples of what a fucking shitfest gamer culture is. It's nice to have forums like these where the people making stupid semantic arguments about how misogyny can only mean a special thing the dictionary said 20 years ago are in the minority for once.
Fucking nansies. Wish it was released here - I would get one in a heartbeat. I love off the wall shit like that.
I don't find it particularly appealing, but just like the Hitman uproar last spring I do wonder how much of the outrage over it is manufactured and how much is genuine. It's just a tacky zombie torso thing to go with a B-moviesque zombie game, it's not an art piece designed to draw contrast between feminism in video gaming and domestic violence or whatever BS a lot of the commentators are trying to come up with.
Like everything else "offensive" in this world, it's only an issue because people make it one. I'm pretty sure the starving, abused, and impoverished of the world would kill for the luxury of spending more than two seconds worrying about how "wrong" this piece of art is. First world problems at its finest...
While we're at it, lets just censor Halloween costumes and decorations to ensure nobody gets their feelings hurt.
I'm not sure what I am more upset over. The fact that I likely won't ever get to own this or all the hypersensitive people who come out of the woodwork to say how butthurt they are.
While it isn't my thing, I can see fans of all things zombie wanting one of these for their collection. But of course the "habitually offended by everything" crowd can never let a good self-important nobility crusade go to waste, so you can't have one! Never mind that movie studio effects artists have things 10 times as garish and evocative all over their studio; we are going to pick on game makers because they are extra bad! Or something.
I guess the bleeding hearts have never seen a roman bust before. Or these were the same assholes in ancient Rome who were whining about those busts back then.
That is a sculpted bust, not a person. You know it is possible to enjoy the form of a woman as a man/lgbt while at the same time not treating people you encounter as crap.
Is it juvenile, yes. Did you hang a poster of a sexualized girl/ boy in your room when you were younger? Did all the primarily 30 something gamers have kids that grew up gaming? Could you say a market for this exists? It does, and that market is not you, they already tried to market to you in the last game and 30s didn’t respond, now they are targeting 18s.
So it would be OK if it was a buff man-torso instead?
That’s what I’m wondering about as well. I find it very tasteless, but I’m not sure whether it should be called misogynistic.
(And like 800 comments like that. We got a lot of those here too. Everyone should read our #1reasonwhy thread!)
Oh no, no no.
John Walker, RPS, you’re forcing me to defend a objectively disgusting statue. The mere fact that, instead of simply saying it’s an ugly, relatively tasteless statue, you just had to jump on the ‘misogyny’ bandwagon, practically forces me on the opposite side of whatever garbage lays beside me. Every other god damn gaming article I’ve read by the end of 2012 somehow related to misogyny and the objectification of women. It’s some kind of mass hysteria to see sexism and hatred for women, in absolutely everything that could be even remotely be related to women.
I love RPS too much to see it turn into Kotaku 2.0. Hell, even the comment section has been continuously degrading over the months.
RPS – this can’t happen. For God’s sake, don’t do this.
The world sucks. Deal with it. Rock and roll.
I look forward to RPS’ lauding headline when DayZ’s collectors edition includes a pewter statuette depicting a zombie giving an underprivileged minority girl a high school equivalency diploma.
The entire premise of the game is hacking up half naked beach bod male and female zombies, yet somehow a statuette that perfectly encapsulates this is misogynistic and crass? Puh-lease! Can the fake outrage get anymore ridiculous?
I have a question:How is this any different from the tens of thousands of gory statues you can find on sale every halloween? The fact that it used to be female? The fact that it has tits? What if it were a male torso? I mean, is it really sexist? It isn’t really human anymore..unless you’re attracted to it. I mean, if the argument here is that it’s demeaning towards women because the female form is being objectified…it’s a limbless, bloody torso. Unless you’re worried about misogynistic necrophiles, there’s no objectification here.
Seriously. It’s NOT REAL. Why all of a sudden are people getting all pissy about desensitization? Gory horror movies went through all this in the 80′s and everyone decided ‘Well, it’s not real, it’s a movie, it doesn’t affect people as much as people feared, we can all breath a sigh of relief’ yet because it’s videogames, everyone acts like this issue is new?
Much ado about nothing.
Are all the bikini wearing zombies in the game with their limbs and heads misogynistic? I can never nail down where exactly the line is among the faux outrage crowd.
And then I stopped reading and killed myself! So, hooray PA forums for not looking like this.
I would chalk that scene up to stupidity over malice myself.
Actually, that's how I'd chalk this whole thing up. These guys are kinda dumb. From marketing, to PR, to their actual games, they're not too good at this. Not just from a sexism standpoint, but also from a "making a not broken game" standpoint.
While this whole thing leaves me feeling sick, and really makes me question the place the industry is in, one thing I can feel better about is this was done out of ignorance, not malice. Unfortunately this is one of the biggest examples of that ignorance we've seen in a while.
Honestly if you go looking for people saying stupid shit in comment threads that well will never run dry. It doesn't mean that those people are any more important or relevant to the world than Angry of Mayfair was back when the main method of displaying vaguely anti-pc bluster was broadsheet newspapers.
It's pretty much a giant circle jerk in here, so I know I don't plan on making many friends
An edgy Truth Teller™ appears!
however I don't see a person being forced or humiliated into situations beyond their control because of their sex, so perhaps we could tone down the rabid screams of 'sexism'
Either this a fantastic example of non sequitur or you have literally no idea what sexism means.

edit: Whoops, sorry, Zeb got kicked in the time it took me to read the page and write up a response -- no intent here to dog someone removed from the premises.
I had no idea paforums had this feature. That's awesome.
"I think I can comment on this because I used to live above the Baby Doll Lounge, a topless bar that was once frequented by bikers in lower Manhattan."

Rock Paper Shotgun: (And like 800 comments like that. We got a lot of those here too. Everyone should read our #1reasonwhy thread!)
And then I stopped reading and killed myself! So, hooray PA forums for not looking like this.
I am done. I have been slain by the demons of ignorance.
An edgy Truth Teller™ appears!
Either this a fantastic example of non sequitur or you have literally no idea what sexism means.
