I'm a bit late for the Dead Island bust discussion, I hesitated to voice my opinion on the whole thing because on the one hand, I find the whole debate silly and on the other that I would probably be pounced by the more vicious posters in here.
I decided to write it up anyway, only to discover that Tom Chick shares my view and already worded it better than I might be able to.
This is a bad article that obtusely ignores the reasons people were upset.
Then it goes on to prop up dead island, a game that in the background calls one of its leads a "feminist whore" as a bastion of strong female characters.
Not to mention a game company that made one of the most racist games of all time.
Finally, you're not going to make any actual headway by starting an argument by slighting the people you're disagreeing with
I dunno, with dev costs skyrocketing I find it hard to believe publishers are still gonna hedge their bets on one system instead of porting everywhere
Microsoft will pay for the exclusivity, they did it last gen and they will do it again. They know how important exclusive titles will be during the launch window, then they will stop caring again after the userbase is already there.
The only reason I was initially mad about the new DMC was because
I was actually interested in that stuff they were hinting in 4 that Nero's demon arm was a part of Virgil's soul that had attached itself to him, and it seemed like they might go somewhere with that in another game, and then I was annoyed that the new one would be an alternate continuity or whatever
but I'm hearing such good things about it that I don't really care now
so what is unprofessional fridays turning out to be?

You know why companies love preorders so much? Because they get an immediate influx of cash, right then and there. Extra cash over long periods is certainly a legitimate way to make money, as proven by insurance companies, loans and US cell phones, but there is a point where you're risking too much by making the price too low.
That's why new phones tend to be $199 for the low end model. They could go much, much cheaper, but there is a risk of customers defaulting or any number of other issues when you go into extended payment plans. This risk is lessened by having a higher starting price.
If Microsoft were willing to make the brand new xbox console $99 with live subscription subsidy, then they wouldn't have made the current xbox $99 with live subscription subsidy. It'd have been $49.
If they even decide to go with a cell phone style plan for the new xbox, it's going to be $199 or $249.
Wonder what the Gabecube means for the PS/Steam connection
Considering it was all of the one game that supported it, I think that's probably it? At least for this gen. Valve would have to release some games for there to be console ports they needed to patch.
yeah i'm thinking if either company has a subscription-based model (and i hope they do, it's a good idea) then i imagine the system is going to be the cost of an iphone + 2 years of online. just take what phones are doing with their contract model
the expectation isn't about you getting a new phone at the end of your contract for companies. cell phone providers don't really care about that, especially since all they're really doing is taking a huge hit on the phones
it's the expectation that after those two years, you're going to re up your contract.
which is what microsoft would bank on, the idea that once you're in the userbase you won't leave
It's going to be a cheaper price, but they're not going to make it that cheap. Aside from the point I already made about the current xbox subscription model, you have to sell the idea to shareholders, and shareholders don't tend to give a shit about the next 3 or 4 years if it means risking their dividends for the current one.
It just is not going to be $99. Maybe, maybe $149 for the lowest end, shitty sku. But making incentives for a new client base doesn't mean sacrificing 3/4 of your liquid cashflow for the possibility of an increased amount of money at the end of the contract. Particularly when a large portion of that money is going to be needed to continue production of more units in the first place.

There's also the point that an iPhone 5 is estimated to cost Apple in the neighborhood of $200 to build, for any of its sizes.
Meanwhile Microsoft sold the $399 Premium Xbox 360 at an estimated $125 loss when it was launched.

I know it's a quick look and scrolling text isn't super interesting.
But at a lot of time it is way more frustrating having them miss really obvious stuff than having them spend a few more seconds reading and investigating stuff.
It went towards making more of them, paying the warranty repair on the truckload of fucked units coming back for service, and paying the R&D to develop new, less fucked units to perform warranty repair on after purchase.
Could someone recommend me a movie on netflix to watch?
after a moratorium on games for the day, I've watched Ghost Protocol, The King's Speech, The Artist, Drive, and need another movie to cap the night off before going to read propbably.

but it isn't a loss, they're selling it for $640. it's just broken up into smaller payments.

consoles last much longer, which is why I expect them to have a longer contract balanced by a cheaper upfront price

The original 360s were $525 to produce?

I've been thinking about it since and today I picked up THPS3 at the old used game shop
@The Betman if you have access to a PS2 or OXbox I recommend you try the real THPS3
I'm not sure how it'd work on a GC controller but it's worth a shot maybe
