Nothing much is missable in Chapter 1. The real good stuff starts showing up in Chapter 2 on, and none of it that I know of is both missable and important. Eidolons, for example, can be returned to if you fail to get them when you first can.
Oh, and prepare yourself for much longer chapters. MUCH longer.
And yeah, from Chapter 2 on, you start getting JP. Your first package should be 5 for each person to use, and you'll get more at important points in the story.
I would suggest trying to specialize. Oh, and start training Red Mage early. The highest-level stuff is amazing, but it takes forever to level.
+1
MaddocI'm Bobbin Threadbare, are you my mother?Registered Userregular
Yeah I would basically exclusively level Red Mage with your mages early on
You want to get that shit done ASAP because they become totally useless past a certain point
Well, so far my Light team trained up everything to level 3 that they could -- I think they missed out on 2 or 3 jobs before the end of chapter 1. So there's not really any specialization as of yet -- my team at the end of chapter one was 3 thieves and a white mage, because it was either take thief or take summoner, I believe.
Do any of the characters themselves have stat specializations? That is to say, does like, Sarah have a natural leaning towards mage jobs, or Sol towards physical, or what have you?
It probably makes sense to make Alba and Dusk mages, I think. But again, all up to you.
On my end of things, I've reached the final boss, and I think it's sadly time to grind. Thankfully, this game is very FFV in that the final dungeon has monsters just filled with AP, including the ever-popular Movers. I think I'll try the final boss again once I've got Dualcast for my mages, and Dual-Wield for Nacht. I feel bad for the three characters I've been sort of neglecting in this last dungeon...
Okay, so I have some endgamey questions, after facing the final boss once and losing:
Alright, so which of the two Elgos are you facing at the end of the game? Light Elgo, who accompanied your party to the airship and got Backdraft'd by Baugauven, or Dark Elgo, who was nowhere to be seen in the crystal chamber?
All I know for sure is that The Mask (or, at least, The Mask at the time of Chapter 4) is the good one, while the one in the World of Nil is the evil one. The one before the crystal chattered was also evil.
Actually, I think I figured it out. The Light Elgo is the evil one. He pretended to die at Baugauven's hands after telling the Warriors of Light to seek crystals, and then easily walked away from the crash, because he's the final boss; he has the stats for that. Meanwhile, the Dark Elgo left the Crystal Chamber before Nacht woke up, and hid his identity by wearing Magus robes and wearing a mask. The reason The Mask has such better magic than Elgo was that he wasn't attempting to hide his power, as he did when he was pretending to be a simple Red Mage.

Does that sound about right?
hmmm
Something about that sounds off, now that I think about it. Elgo was split when the world split, I thought? He said that a couple times I think.
But he was also the Emperor, and that had to be in place before the world split. So is Elgo as a whole evil?
I'm not sure if there's much of a point to splitting Elgo up into "Light" and "Dark" though. "Good" and "Evil," sure, but since he could travel between the worlds Light and Dark don't really apply to him? Although, I thought the ability to travel between worlds was given by the power of Nil, which the Mask shouldn't have access to?
Eh, whatever. I'll look at a wiki later and figure it out :P
It's possible that Elgo had learned how to travel through dimensions before he instigated the dimensional split incident. As such, The Mask would remember how to do that, because he knew how to when he was part of Elgo's mind.
But yeah, I think Elgo was evil back when he joined the party in the prologue. When the split happened, The Mask was born, apparently from his remaining conscience and misgivings about what he was doing. After Elgo "died" in the airship crash, he probably teleported back to Avalon.
On another note, what's with all these guest characters getting cool attacks that aren't part of the class progression? Ranger's an amazing job, don't get me wrong, but neither of Gramps's ultimate attacks are in the class progression. :[
Nacht: Dark Knight with Dual Wield, Backliner, Couner
Alba: Black Mage with Dualcast, Summon
Aigis: Paladin with Doublehand, Counter, Damage > MP
Dusk: White Mage with Dualcast, Mental Discipline
Glaive: Ninja with Aim, Alchemy, Backup (He probably would have been better off if I'd grinded him with dark Knight for Backliner)
So, I had Nacht throwing Ebony Slashes, Alba dualcasting Argy and Meteor every round, Dusk throwing Curagas everywhere, Aigis setting up Mighty Wall and then Ivory Slashes, and Glaive Quick-shotting and throwing items at everything that was low on health. It was a pretty sweet setup. Only way it could have been better would be if Glaive had Backliner and Phantom Rush. As things stand, he still has Midareyuki, which is only half as good as Phantom Rush, but still.
I might have overdone the grinding a tad on this one, or it may be that the boss just didn't use his best attacks often enough thi time around, (Didn't see him use Dark Flow even once after the scripted bit), but the fight was a lot easier this time around.
Oh, and I gave the Gladiators' Hall a shot, now that it's open. Beat the first levels of each boss, and got Apocalypse for Nacht. Now he's rocking that alongside Graham's Will.
Go to Castle Lux. There are a bunch of Moogles hanging out in one room. One sells stuff, one takes Mog Coins, and one sends you to the Gladiators' Hall.
Ohhhh back in the Void, I see. I assumed that was still all destroyed, but thy reversed time a bit. I was going to the ruins where Castle Lux used to be on the World Map.
No problem. I really only knew about it because I stumbled on it while looking for the save-point cutscene in Lux. Made me feel like a fool for backtracking to Moogle Island every time I needed more items, too. :P
But yeah, good luck with those superbosses. Omega Weapon in particular is nasty, but the prize is worth it. He's guarding a veritable Kuza Castle of awesome weapons.
By the way, I'd just like to say that this game's final boss themes are just amazing.
Naw, they don't. Your only reward seems to be Adamantite, Moogle Coins (Woo! Master all the jobs!) and Omega Weapon's little treasure trove.
I just beat Omega Weapon my second time and took Ragnarok, and how he's leveled up. Gonna grind Glaive to Dark Knight 7 (for Backliner) before I go back in.
On the subject of grinding: Movers suck. I swear they're just taunting me when they Escape half a second before Alba fires off Gigaflare.
Just got to Chapter 11 in FFXIII and had a couple questions.
First, I remember reading it's where to grind CP etc and do a lot of post game stuff. How much time should I spend doing optional things? I literally just landed and haven't even left the camp.
Secondly, I feel I rarely use Sentinel and it makes me think I might be doing something wrong. Is it more of a late game class? It just almost always seems better to go commando than sentinel. At least where I'm at.
I never used Sentinel outside of a few fights in the main game (the tutorial one where you kind of have to, and a couple Eidolon fights). It's pretty necessary in the post game, though.
As for the sidequests and such, that should be very natural. Once you reach a really big open place and they say "oh by the way, here are some sidequests!" then it's sidequest time :P
Yep, do the series of sidequests up until you get the chocobo, then play through the rest of the chapter. After beating the chapter, you can go back and beat the sidequest that gets you the 2x CP accessory. You'll need to cheese the fight by spamming Death with Vanille, but it's worth picking up.
Sounds pretty friggin' sweet, especially since Alba (my Black Mage/Summoner) isn't capable of fully healing everyone who's been revived, even with Phoenix --> Argy.
Yeah, I've become a really big fan of Araise thanks to these fights. Being able to revive someone and have them instantly back in the battle at full health is fantastic. By the time I'm in need of a multi-character revive, I'm usually about to lose anyways. But Mega Raise should maybe alleviate that?
As long as I can get a Unicorn in right after it, since these guys are so strong even half health isn't enough to survive an attack sometimes haha.
My Adamantoise is up to lvl 3 now. I'm a bit scared at what it's going to do to me...
When my guys are dropping like flies, I usually make it a priority to get Glaive to get (or keep) Alba alive, because Dusk doesn't have Araise yet, so my best option is to chuck Phoenix at the problem and hope Argy turns on Haste or Shell.
Yuuup. That and the fact that you don't get money from the superbosses means that AP is no longer the only thing I'll be grinding in the World of Nil.
So, two questions with unbearably long post-scripts.
Should I get the God Hands and give them to Glaive? Glaive is currently a Ninja, using Mutsunokami and Wing Edge. Wing Edge is the weapon the God Hands would be replacing, since Mutsunokami is stronger than the Wing Edge. He has Backliner, so Wing Edge's row ignoring is not important. What is important is the fact that the God Hands have a power of 100, whereas Wing Edge is 107. However, the God Hands will boost Glaive's Strength stat by 10. Will 10 points of Strength outweight 7 points of Attack? I don't know exactly how damage is calculated in this game. I think that boosting his Strength will make Mutsunokami deal even more damage than it does now, but I don't know for sure.
Or should I get Longinus? I could switch Aigis to a Dragoon (he's mastered that), which is faster and has more MP than Paladin, and the speed effect would make Mighty Wall better, but Dragoons aren't as strong, there aren't very many Dragon Arts that are relevant anymore (and Jump is too slow to be effective anymore) and I still want Ivory Slash and Doublehand, which means I wouldn't have Counter or Damage > MP. Though, those don't come up very often. As for the Ultima Weapon... Nobody's yet hit the damage cap with their attacks, so that limit break effect isn't very sexy right now.
Anyway, second question: What is your team makeup/strategy for Omega Weapon?
I have... well, the same party I said I used on the final boss, except Dusk is a Seer now, and Glaive has Backliner. My strategy at the start of the battle is to use Mighty Wall as soon as humanly possible, having Dusk dualcast Curaga and then Haste on Aigis, if necessary. If everyone's alive and healthy once that's up, I go into a default of using Ebony Slash with Nacht, Ivory Slash with Aigis, Argy/Meteor with Alba, Curaga/Whatever with Dusk, and about 5 Quick Shots in the span of half a second with Glaive.
I rather like Glaive's current setup. He may not deal a lot of damage at once, but being a Ninja and using Quick Shot means that he gets more turns than anyone else, which means he is able to use Alchemy to revive people at a moments' notice. Seriously, in that last battle I had with LV2 Omega Weapon, I had Nacht activate Last Resort because the fight needed to end ASAP, and Glaive got like 5 turns in the time it took Nacht's Doom counter to tick from 10 to 9. Actually, the fight overall is extremely fast-paced. Never have I been more happy for Wait Mode.
Sorry for the big wall O' text.
edit: I decided on the Longinus, and used the massive boost in Aigis's speed (and thus, his effectiveness) to eke a very narrow victory against Omega Weapon Level 3. So now I have the God Hands as well.
I don't know how Str vs Attack relates either, unfortunately. I've found myself wondering too.
I was considering getting the Longinus, but eh, I don't think I want to switch from paladin back to Dragoon. I like the effect of Longinus (reduced time on stuff or something, I think?), but I don't think it's worth it for me. I've moved passed Dragon Arts, so that's just two wasted slots. Plus I have Boost Jump as an F-Ability, so I don't need Jump...
I grabbed me an Ultima Weapon, though, yeah. I haven't hit the damage cap yet, but it's strong anyways, so I figured I might as well. I'm not sure what else more I'm going to get, though.....
So the party that I can currently beat Omega lvl 2 is... Dusk as a Seer (w/ Summon and Half MP), Alba as a Summoner (with DoubleCast only, unfortunately she's a lot-level Summoner, but I need that extra person with Unicorn, etc.), Aigus and Sol as Paladins (both with Doublehanded, Str + 20%, and Counter), and then Nacht as a Dark Knight (with Dual Wield, Counter, and Backliner).
Nacht was a Ninja, then I swapped over to DK when I picked a DK Omega Weapon prize. I'm just not sure how much I like him there. He's got Ebony Slash which is pretty good, but it's still outclassed by both Sol and Aigus doing their Ivory Slash, plus Alba. And as a DK, he doesn't really have the speed of a Ninja, so I dunno.
Edit addition: But as for strategy, I have Dusk use Hastega right away (which is awesome, best F-Ability I've found I think), and one of Sol/Aigus use Mighty Guard. Nacht Ebony Slash's forever, the two PaladinsIvory Slash as long as they can, Alba doublecasts Unicorn and Bahamut depending on how low HP I am, and Dusk casts whatever cure spells need to be done (Araise, Curaga, Mega Raise, or Unicorn typically).
That puts me back in the Omega Weapon's room after beating him, and I don't know what to get... Sol and Aigus both already have ultimate weapons from there, Nacht has a DK weapon, so I could get him a Ninja one? But then I feel like one is wasted. And there's nothing really for the mages...
After getting Longinus, I've decided that, in my opinion, switching Aigis back to a Dragoon was a good decision in the long run. Dragoon's natural high speed, combined with the extra casting speed boost of Longinus, means that I can safely use Mighty Wall before Omega Weapon murders everyone (usually). See, the major problem I was having with Aigis was that, as a Paladin, he was slow
Yes, Jump and Dragon Arts are dead weight (unless I need to attack and am totally out of MP), especially since Dragon Soul costs too much MP to be used as a real panic button. However, in my experience, Holy Blade and Doublehand are pretty much all Aigis needs. If I were to make him a Paladin again, the only things I'd want to put in those two extra slots would be HP 20% and STR 20%. But I think the extra speed and MP of the Dragoon are worth those two slots. I think the only thing that would make me switch back to Paladin would be if I were to grind him as a Memorist until he learned Recollect; I would then sink all my Memories into Speed and STR.
On that note, is it still possible to get all the Memories now that I'm in the World of Dusk? Or did I miss my chance for a lot of them?
edit: As for your item choice... Longinus might work if you ever decide to give Dragoon another shot. the bow could be good for a mage, at least in random batles... The only thing I don't see you ever using is that shield.
Either until you get a chocobo (mission 12 or 14) or until mission 26. You'll start finding sentinels a lot more useful in the upcoming hunts, but in general play they're kinda lame, yeah. It's more of a situational paradigm role that you switch to, so it can soak the hits while your medics heal up.
So, Omega Weapon Level 3 is too strong for me to reliably beat at this point, so I've switched everyone's classes and hopped off to do a bit of grinding.
I turned Aigis into a Memorist and have started seeing what memories I can still find in the World of Dusk. If I sink the Memory points into Speed, Strength, and Vitality, I think I can switch him back to a Paladin, equip him with Recollect and Doublehand, and enjoy the speed I was getting from Dragoon alongside an extra Strength boost and not having to deal with Dragon Arts.
Speaking of Dragon Arts though, I got Aigis a new Fusion Ability: White Draw. The official description is that it sucks away his MP to restore MP to everyone in the party, but it only "sacrifices" MP in the same way that using Ivory Slash "sacrifices" MP. Plus, Aigis himself is included in the spell's effect, and it seems to pay for itself. So, it's a nice thing to use when my casters desperately need MP and I'm out of Dry Ether.
Anyway. I made Dusk into a Bard, because I want to learn Hastega and Esunaga, Alba's a Magus, because I want to get whatever the last Level 8 Black Magic is (Don't tell me. I'll find out myself), and Glaive is a Dancer, because I want Phantom Rush.
Yeah, I got White Draw too, but haven't used it yet. Dry Ethers just seemed a lot more useful, or Elixers if I was in a bind. I'm trying to cut down on my Elixer usage though now that I know how expensive they are...
I haven't tried Omega Lvl 3 yet. I'm actually still in the room deciding what I want as my next reward
I imagine I'm starting to reach the limits of my characters without artificially getting the best F-Abilities (by that I mean, getting things I wouldn't normally get just because I heard online how to get it and that it's good). I didn't want to do that this playthrough, so we'll see how much longer I can go...
Oh yeah, I'm not going to, like, get Hastega for every Light Warrior, or sink hours into grinding Nacht with Monk and Dancer for Phantom Rush. But I think it's fine for Dusk to grind Dancer for Hastega in particular, or whatever.
Oh, and I picked up the Tester job.
...probably.
edit:
As for your next reward... I still say Longinus is worth it. I don't actually know what's in the treasure chests. I assume they respawn so you can keep getting treasures from him when you have all the superweapons...
You could get the bow, if you feel like trying a Ranger in the battle.

I chose jobs based on what the characters initially had. So I made Diana a mage, Glaive a Monk, and etc.
But yeah, you'll start getting more JP and more jobs before too long.
Oh, by the way. In the upcoming chapters, listen to Moogles. There are a few in prominent towns that will tell you where to find new Eidolons.

That puts me back in the Omega Weapon's room after beating him, and I don't know what to get... Sol and Aigus both already have ultimate weapons from there, Nacht has a DK weapon, so I could get him a Ninja one? But then I feel like one is wasted. And there's nothing really for the mages...
