Besides, I can name a recent positive thing from SE right now: Drakengard 3.
Like, I am forever perplexed that game even exists. I don't know who got blackmailed to approve it, because it's probably going to sell very poorly. But dammit, against all odds and despite the company's financial woes, they still approved a sequel to a game that is, at best, a celebrated cult series. I can scarcely believe it's being made, but I'm damn grateful for it.
But whether or not they'll actually localize it is another matter.
I am of a completely polarized mind on this. If they localize it, they will make great strides to me considering pulling the "All is forgiven" card. If they don't, they're dead to me.
In more uplifting news, Square Enix is teasing something big at E3. Being E3, I doubt it's a mobile game or remix album as these 'Please Be Excited' announcements are 90% of the time.
My money is on Final Fantasy IV Completey Complete for the 3DS or Vita.
I'm going to play it safe and say that SE is going to show off the FFVI iOS port/remake at E3. That's their big news

I would be incredibly surprised if they've got anything to show besides FFXIV and the re-branded Versus.
Thing is, I would be perfectly satisfied if that's all there was. As long as there haven't been any significant changes to the original concept of the game (like changing the character designs and setting into something less interesting, or changing the team behind it to one with a less-than-capable track record), I would be perfectly willing to honor it as Final Fantasy XV.
But the majority are still going to shit on them for it. There will be an onslaught of jokes built around "after 7 years, here's five more minutes of gameplay footage!". It's inevitable at this point, and Square has to be aware of that.
So I do kind of hope all this E3 hype they're doing is the result of them being confident what they'll show will overwrite those statements.
In other news, remember Yoko Shimomura? She's teasing her recording of a secret project:
When it's all said and done, will it matter at all what Versus is called, so long as it comes out? I mean, sure name it XV because not only does it luckily fit, but because the name Versus XIII never made any sense, even way back when it did make sense at the time. But does it ultimately matter?
Call it Final Fantasy XV, call it Final Fantasy: Electric Boogaloo. Or even drop the FF name altogether if you think they can get away with it. A name is just that: a name. At this point I don't think anybody gives a crap about the name. Just the actual game, and whether it's going to be finished and any good.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
I don't think too many people will harp over the name (well, some might make the argument that calling it FFXV is a "cheat", though they said the same thing for both online games). The real issue is whether it will deliver after so many years of delays.
It sounds like a ridiculous expectation, but at the very least it has to meet some standards. It has to have a big open world like the classic games, it has to have a lot of content, and it of course has to play well. I'm not expecting a revolutionary title of ultimate perfection, but it better at least feel like something that was worth taking the extra time to polish.

Yeah, but if you're going to use such standards as "open world" and such, then technically XIII barely qualifies, and I'm man enough to admit even that. Hell, X too, if one wanted to be real pedantic about it.
I don't know if that kind of stuff truly matters or not. But if rebranding it XV serves them internally as a swift kick to the ass though, then more power to them. It's clearly having that effect with XIV, where any other sane company would have shot that horse long ago.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
I'm still looking forward to XIII-3. The haters can bite me. XIII was good. XIII-2 was gooder. By that math, XIII-3 will be goodest.
I asked this before but didn't get any bites; what is it about what they've shown of Lightning Returns that has you excited for it? Preferring XIII-2 to XIII is a matter of taste and depends on whether or not you really got into the battle system and the hunts in the first game, but XIII-3 looks to be scrapping all of that for something that looks to be a slower KH style of thing.
It seems peculiar to me that when one of the main criticisms levied against 13 was the inability to control your other party members, they'd tackle that issue by removing them outright. What I find even weirder is that the story as presented thus far has made little mention of the established cast and villains thus far.

Well, first out of the gate is I liked XIII's story. I will absolutely not make any claims that it was the most super duper awesomest story in the world. And if you gave me your list of why you thought it was junk, I'll very likely agree with your points. It did have problems. But I still liked it well enough. The same goes for XIII-2. And the fact that it ended on a whopper of a note and cliffhanger means at the most basic level, I want some freakin' closure to this story, one way or another.
The whole limited time and how you're on the clock, with potential multiple endings as well sounds interesting. I've always liked games that played around with it. Majora's Mask being the reigning king. We'll see how it ultimately plays out, whether they nail it, or botch it and just make you feel rushed and drained all the time.
And from what brief shots we've seen, the gameplay seemed decent enough. It looks like it plays mostly similar to the previous games, only now actually in real-time. Again, we'll see how it goes once we get more information, but so far it at least doesn't sound utterly horrible.
I guess I'm just kinda confused as to why you ask. It almost sounds like you're saying I'm not allowed to be excited for it. Which I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're not (though mentioning it at all basically implies I am, so for that, I'm genuinely sorry). If on the other hand you're saying there's simply not enough information to be excited about... I can totally respect that opinion. My counterpoint to that though is to say... well if this thread has become so jaded that the default opinion of anything that comes out of S-E is "total shit", then...what's the point, man? We all might as well write off S-E completely and walk away. Once again, I don't deny they're doing a pretty crappy job as of late. But in this circle of hate, screw it I'm playing the optimism card. I'm excited because I'm excited. Liked the first two, looking forward to more. Just like anybody else would be excited about anything.
Not trying to be an ass or anything, and I feel bad and embarrassed for losing it earlier and being a bitch. Peace and love, and all that other hippy crap.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
The one time I make a post about FF13 and don't add a disclaimer about how much I love its gameplay... :P
That's basically my position - I loved how 13 played and was a little disappointed that despite the mechanical improvements in 13-2 like cross/wide paradigms and leader switching on death, they didn't add in any exciting new encounters. I'm not entirely sure what to make of 13-3's combat - it's going to be slower by virtue of only having one dude, and I don't know if they'll have it feel as frantic as switching to Com/Com/Com to eke out as much damage as you can while the enemy is launched and staggered.
On the other side of things, I think that 13-2 did a pretty good job of setting Caius up as a villain and manipulator, but I don't think I've seen him at all in any of the promotional material for LR? Given how 13-2 ended I can understand them playing around with it a little so as to not spoil people, but I don't understand why they'd choose to frame Noel as an antagonist at all, even if that's not how things actually play out in the game.
Thirdly, I feel that having yet another city to fool around in gives the whole world a lack of permanence, in that they just keep creating new environments rather than expanding on what has already been established. I really liked Academia, and Cocoon before that, and I wish we actually got to spend more time in them. There's absolutely a possibility that we will, I just wonder why the focus has been on all new stuff rather than building on what we know.
For context, I was kinda down on 13-2 right up until a trailer a couple of months before its release that focused on Caius. I'm hoping the same thing happens again here.
For my part I don't like the head first dive the FF series is making into endless sequels.
I understand why they're doing this, because in 2013 it takes a lot more time and money to produce a brand new game with new artwork and models etcetera than it did in 1999. So this way they can keep re-using assets and carry on pumping out a new game every 12-18 months.
I still don't like it though, it means if they make a world/story/set of characters you hate (like they did for me in XIII) you're stuck with them for three games instead of one. And it robs the series of the thing I used to like most about it, the experience of diving into a fresh world.
XIII-2 and XIII-3 may well turn out to be great games, who knows, but I hated XIII so much I will never buy them to find out. I don't want to play a sequel to a game I never finished because I won't know what's going on, I won't be invested in the story.

This is why the whole situation is weird. I didn't really care for Lightning, so the fact that they pretty much ditched her for 13-2 worked for me. Now for 13-3 they're bringing her back and ditching 13-2's cast (of two, granted), which is just bemusing. It's the same with the world - I thought 13-2 would be about the people of Cocoon dealing with the aftermath of not having the Fal'cie to provide for them, kind of like how X-2 was Spira coming to terms with not having to deal with Sin and Yevon, but instead it was about some completely random time-travel shenanigans.
It's almost as if they made a half-hearted attempt to have 13-2 be a clean break to encourage people who weren't invested in 13 to jump in, but then they changed their minds part-way through.
I'm curious why people think versus will be good. It has been in development hell for eternity, so if it ever gets done chances are it will be a giant mess. And the things we have seen seem hilariously boring.

The Versus dev time is more (I would guess) an issue of mismanagement rather than continuously throwing away the work and starting over (which was DNF's issue). Either way, I agree that what little gameplay we've seen wasn't super exciting. I wouldn't mind if it had been recently retooled and thus had a more "honest" dev time of a few years. A traditionally controlling/playing FF game would be nice at this point.
Nier is made by a group of developers that only care about themselves. This is both a positive and a negative, as weird as that may sound.
They have a vision, and they put their heart and souls into it, and it definitely shows.
It also means that at times, they don't give a shit of a flying fuck about you the player.
Well to be fair, the teams behind FFXIII and XIV didn't give a flying fuck about the player either.
"Gamers like corridors right?"
To end up with something as beautiful and magnificent as FF13 requires love for everyone.
I guess it is different over on the other side of le pond what with many games not being localized recently, but I have been more pleased with SE recently than I have over the past many, many years.
BDFF is like one of the best games ever made, you know. Not to hype it or anything.
I'm at that stage already and I only got to play the last two demos of BD:FF for about half an hour last time my friend with an import 3ds was in town!
I know, right? I was only kind of vaguely keeping an eye on the game, but that looks way hot. They're coming out swinging on this reboot, if you ask me.
Especially as monthly payments for MMOs are increasingly rare. With Rift going F2P, this game and WoW will be the only remaining major titles not offer a F2P option.
I mean, totally thread relevant too as most of their known remaining 2013 games are FF games after all. FF X|V, FF X|X-2 HD, FF games without pipes in it such as Lightning Returns.
