Whoah, I guess the tutorial is over when you go down the well. From having combat be a cakewalk, I die within 10 seconds from any encounter in that well.

EDIT: And leveling up is too slow on the outside... I guess I'm missing something about combat. It surely can't be supposed to be this difficult all of a sudden?

The game is very very very very very stat-based. At lower levels, literally the only thing between winning easily and a horrible death can be three or four points of defense. You just need to get two or three more levels under your belt and you'll notice a world of difference.

But that's super boring! Why then can you run around in combat at all?

Because kiting with ranged pets or with Oliver is actually ridiculously, ridiculously good in many situations. You can do entire boss fights with just Oliver for a good portion of the game, and take on some pretty powerful groups.
I don't get it, they've just taught me to psyche up in order to counter the charging attacks from enemies, but there simply isn't any time to switch familiars and psyche up AND do the counter attack thing in order to counter attack.

Do you have to anticipate when you need to be psyched up already? This doesn't make sense to me.

Honestly you're probably better off not using Psyche Up at all in most scenarios. What they tout it being used for interrupting is generally safer to just absorb with the defend command.

Ok, thanks! But now the game told me to press attack when there's a blue thing around the attack symbol. All I see is a constant blue glow around the attack bubble. Was this also a bullshit tip, like the psyche up counter? So far, I've never noticed anything different regardless of how I time it.

The whole bubble will flash blue. It's not really worth worrying about, but it can be handy if your timing is good.

You have got to be kidding me! So the only two combat details the game has bothered to explain, psyche counter and attack counter, is not worth it?

This, together with all the complaints about the AI, leads me to think that Level 5 completely fucked up what could have been a truly great combat system!

Psyche Up can be totally worth it, just not for the reason the game says. It really ups your damage and attack speed. You should just cancel out and switch back to Oliver to defend a charged attack instead of hoping for a critical to cancel it.

True, but it would take the best tricks in the game to make (for example) Bone Brigadier better than Bone Baron.

just had the game glitch out on me, so i had to quit to the main menu. thankfully i only lost about 30 minutes of leveling up familiars, and not like 5 hours of grinding rare ingredients or whatever. i was in the middle of a battle and one of the AI guys did a supercharge attack, but the animation never actually played out.

Hmm not exactly a bang up job but I did my best. Might need to screw around with it some more.

edit: Urg scaling it down to 80x is really fucking with the image and I don't know why.

edit2: rofl im messing around with how the layers function and I just managed to paste white all over him just to see how it works on this one layer. So wherever I brush he's going white like the background. The sunglasses don't fade. (They are on another layer.) I couldn't stop laughing. It was like a chesire cat. He slowly faded until only the sunglasses remained...

also, i have an irrational urge to have gold versions of all the familiars that you can get gold versions of. their capture rates are so low though, on top of their already low spawn rate. i just want a gold toko, game! is it so much to ask?

Gawd I had to manually edit his smile and various freaking bits of weirdness that were leaving giant white holes in him when his sunglasses flashed. He also had a bit of his left ear just left out in the air at one point. This scaling thing is whack. Getting him to be not stretched completely ate his smile. O_o It's good enough now I guess. Bit flatter than the original but eh.

Yeah it was scaling it down to 80x80 that ate his smile. I didn't make it. I took that gif posted earlier and modified it. So the scaling wasn't on the forums. It was the program I was using. It couldn't handle the curve of his smile and just negated the whole thing down to about two pixels. So he looked super pissed.

Man, this focus on getting golden glims so Swain gets a guaranteed swipe at the rarest item sure isn't working for me. Hours into it, I've gotten a single golden glim, and it fell directly onto Esther, so I couldn't even try to get it.

Don't do that it isn't worth it. The items have a 20% steal rate so just steal normally.

    It better be.

I was doing a bit of testing and I think I found a basic rule behind why the AI will pull out a weak hitting character randomly. It's because that character has the highest defense stat. Even if it can't actually defend or evade they'll still pull it out if it's got the highest defense and their current familiar is being attacked. Then they just keep that character in. I think they like evasion too, but they seem to weight defense higher than evasion.
So if you want the AI to pull out a familiar with defend when you hit all defend, you have to make sure the familiar with defend actually has the highest defense stat.
When you select all attack they are more reckless and pull out the character with the highest attack stat regardless of defense, so you have to be a bit careful about that because they will gladly get beaten up to do damage with all attack.
I set all three up with characters that can defend and have higher defend stat than their other two familiars and can get them all to hit defend when I want them to. Unless one of you is very low health and they have a healer. Then they will probably heal.
It's best to give them a familiar with decent attack + defense, so basically give everyone at least one tank type. That way when they are getting hit and pull out the defense stat character they can still contribute damage.

This is based on "do what you like".

Also this is why esther is so retarded early on. Her bird has high physical stats for a magical character, so it probably has a higher defense stat than anything else you have from the point you get her until quite a bit later unless you specifically capture and build for it. So she pulls it out whenever her current familiar is getting hit, except it can't defend it can only evade. The ai doesn't seem to be able to use evade too well. So when things go south for her the bird is locked into a cycle of getting hit, healing up, she ends up out of mana or eats too many big boss attacks, she dies. You get the picture.
Good thing Oliver is so strong 1 on 1 against bosses early on eh.

I first noticed when one of them started pulling out the wishing whambat even though it did 1 damage and had no attacks. There was literally no reason for it to do this. I had only given them the whambat to level it. So next fight I noticed that it's first familiar would get hit and it would swap to the whambat. So I checked the stats and the whambat had the highest defense of all the familiars that character had.
So I had a bit of a working hypothesis going with that.

I got some more evidence when my iron-man got strong enough that he suddenly started appearing in battle despite being in the third slot. And sure enough his defense had flipped over to being the highest, even though he was a lot lower level than the others at the time. Soon as the familiar in the first slot got hit out came the iron-man.

So now I'm trying to give everyone at least one mite style character. Decent attack + high defense. It's working out pretty well.

For all attack, I've set up my golden hurly with a clockwork axe. So he has ridiculous attack compared to anyone else. All his defense stats are still pathetic though. But if I hit all attack out he comes on that character. Golden hurly at the press of a button.
Which, I have to say, is a beautiful thing.

no, items go down to 5% steal chances. the couple of rare post game ingredients that you need for one of the last errand board quests both have 20% steal chances, what makes it a real pain is that the enemies you steal them from are also rare spawns so youre compounding shit on top of shit.

edit: plus you need 10 of them, which is a lot. that task is the one that people have reported grinding for 25+ hours to get the stuff for, so... yea. in that specific instance the golden glim thing might be worth a shot. i dunno, i havent attempted it yet personally.

Test of Friendship was a really nice change of pace and breath of fresh air... I hope there's more of that later in the game!

Right now, though, I feel like I'm over leveling myself in the hunt for new familiars... also... the battle system... I'm not weary of it yet, but... the fact that the game pauses AFTER you've chosen an action, rather than before (like in basically ALL other tactical combat games) feels very weird.

I suspect it was Level 5 because some of the plot points are eerily similar to the events in Dragon Quest 8. Namely how the villain is single-handedly responsible for everything that's wrong in the world. It doesn't irk me as badly in this game as it did in DQ8, but I have to wonder what Shadar gets out of breaking hearts of common people.

I'd more readily accept it if they simply said "Shadar gets some sort of sick pleasure from breaking hearts." but nope, no explanation other than "Don't stand up to Shadar. He'll break your heart!" I gotta wonder what some of these people did to piss him off. I guess a shopkeeper murdered his father and raped his mother or something.

I'm pretty sure for DQ8 Level 5 did not do the story. That should have been Yuji Horii, because if anybody else did the story I think japan would have thrown a fit. If Level 5 had done the story it would have taken a turn for absolute shit at the end. Have you ever played Dark Cloud 2? Forgetting about story in Level 5 games is usually the way to go, but they go so far out of their way to make them as stupid as possible that it's hard for me to forget all of them.

Edit: Basically what I'm trying to say here is that unless the bird the White Witch has in all the cutscenes I've seen turns out to be the villain in the end and also the bird is parallel Oliver then Level 5 might not have done the story.

Maybe I dodged a bullet by not seeing the end of that game.

I couldn't even get more than a few dungeons into Dark Cloud 2 before stopping it because of how annoying the main character is Oedipusing something fierce throughout the game.

I like Ni No Kuni because even though it is also a story about a boy going on a quest for his mother, it doesn't go overboard with it and decide that every conversation the main character has needs to be steered toward the topic of his mother in some fashion.

(PSN: Morninglord) (Steam: Morninglord) (WiiU: Morninglord22) I like to record and toss up a lot of random gaming videos here.

I really really like my Puss in Boats. He's just so dapper. I haven't found another familiar I like as much. The Auralynx is just silly looking.

I've been choosing what familiars to use on their looks, which makes it easy since so many look ridiculous. My current favorite is the Purrloiner. According to the Wizard's Companion, he's going to look right awesome once I transform him.

Why does using items lock you out from the ability menu for a week?!

"Ohh gee, Esther is dead AGAIN. I better use a Phoenix Feather on her! Ohh look, during the 1 hour it takes to use an item, then for the game to allow you back to the ability selection menu, the boss started a charge up attack, finished the charge up attack, and killed her the instant she rezzed, THAT IS THE MOST FAIR AND WELL BALANCED THING I HAVE EVER SEEN!!"

Not to mention the whole 3 seconds it takes for a heal spell to actually hit after the casting animation finishes.
