familiarologist: done. finished the game with about 160 familiars tamed, so it was a pretty healthy grind to get the last 90. now, on to getting some scrolls of truth and kaleidostones!
Hmm. That pre-order gryphon just mops the floor with everything. I'm just standing back as Oliver and watch Esther go at it, and 5 seconds later rake in the rewards.
I haven't been able to figure out what to do with that moth, though.

Griffy was definitely the best pre-order DLC. His look and mannerisms are impressive and the initial stats are high. I really get a kick out of that one.
Also, just after the trials:
Bam! Volcano. I liked that sudden twist.
I have been tempted to snag Flutterby off of Ebay, but it really does not seem all that.
a couple preorder familiars are going to be free on the store this coming week, they will probably release the other ones too at some point. i wouldnt recommend paying for them on ebay or whatever.
I have a question that maybe someone here can answer. Who wrote the story for this? Was it Ghibli or Level 5?
I suspect it was Level 5 because some of the plot points are eerily similar to the events in Dragon Quest 8. Namely how the villain is single-handedly responsible for everything that's wrong in the world. It doesn't irk me as badly in this game as it did in DQ8, but I have to wonder what Shadar gets out of breaking hearts of common people.
I'd more readily accept it if they simply said "Shadar gets some sort of sick pleasure from breaking hearts." but nope, no explanation other than "Don't stand up to Shadar. He'll break your heart!" I gotta wonder what some of these people did to piss him off. I guess a shopkeeper murdered his father and raped his mother or something.
Shadar may a control freak and feels the need to oppress anyone who slights him. Still, you have the silliness with him showing up when the Oliver is weak and not just squashing him himself. There really needed to be some kind of protection mechanism in there or at least have Oliver question that.

It's explained when you fight him for reals
if Shadar or Oliver is killed, then so is Oliver or Shadar. They're soul mates. That's why Shadar just wants to get him out of the way and not kill him outright.

I think I'm missing a vital part of this game... could someone please explain why I would want different familiars at all? I guess I'm not very far into the game, but seriously, that gryphon wipes the floor with everything in 5 seconds or less, and most of my other familiars do near to no damage. Is it just picking the ones with the most interesting abilities in order to support the gryphon until I find another familiar that can replace him (not that anyone is anywhere near right now, with his attack stat well over 100)?

you can beat the game with pretty much whatever familiars you want, its not a particularly hard game. if you dont mind using the same familiar through the whole game then go for it. it becomes a lot easier to sub in other ones you like once you hit areas where you can grind tokos, so... just do whatever you want basically.

Shadar mentions that something is protecting Oliver after what should have been a successful attempt to kill him failed. I'm wondering if Alicia is actually protecting Oliver, or Shadar is holding back for some other reason and lying to the White Witch about it.

I wonder if the Gryphon has really really good stats early, then tapers off really quickly. Some of the familiars peak with their stats at different points. Some at 30-40, some at 60-70, some at 90-99. I bet the gryphon peaks at like 10-20 or something.
Having a variety of familiars lets you have abilities available for certain situations. Some bosses are weak to certain magic. Some of the defensive spells are useful later on too. Just a guess mind you.

Yeah, Griffy peaks really early. In his top tier form, he caps out at level 29. But even then, he's still stronger than most of my tier 3 guys who are in their 40s/50s. He's not even close to the strongest familiar in the game, but he's likely to be the best you have until pretty late in the game.

Once I had three party members, I got a monolith thing for Swaine, took away his hurly (because he doesn't get bonus for that familiar type), and then gave him a solid physical attack (now a bone baron) and magic (hierophant at the moment). Esther was fielding griffy. She had other stuff, but never used them. And Oliver had gold hurly for a while, but now has a castasteros or whatever it's called, along with a fluoroboros and one of those cat pirates.
I have my Griffon dude maxed out, I think it's level 29 in his 3rd tier form. He's still about twice as strong as all my other 3rd tier familiars who are level ~65. I kind of don't like the fact that he's by far stronger than every other one I have, but it's whatever. My Mitey is still my ultimate bro, and he's more versatile, and still strong.
So this is what Namco told me:

My front line dudes atm are a 2nd tier dino, a captain whamtastic and a beam man with thunderstorm and yoohoo.
They tear everything apart.
I took esther's stupid bird away because it's heal wasn't good enough, she never used its magic right and it kept getting too high defense so she started bringing it in over the captain whamtastic whenever it got a level over him. They were basically even on defense. However the captain whamtastic has like 300 evasion and rarely gets hit. So if it did ever get hit she would sub it in for a creature with 5 more defense and pitiful evasion then spend all fight healing herself.
She kept misusing it so I took it away. Teach her a lesson. I gave her a tier 3 mushroom I levelled from a napcap so she better not come crying to me about having no heals cos that thing is amazing at it.
I'm gonna be real sad if the whamtastic ever bottoms out. Right now he can time to shine and do a triple hit attack that'll do 3x50 in a heartbeat cos I gave him a +60 claw weapon I found. He's fast as hell and completely untouchable. If I bring the puss in boats out as well as the captain whamtastic and they both hit the same guy, that thing is stunlocked until death, if it isn't insta obliterated. He can also sabotage and use his wind aoe effectively cos he's got stats in basically everything.
He's not a dps character, he's a melee support, but he's easily the best support in the game I've found so far. He can chase down and finish fast things, has really high accuracy and evasion, and slightly above average everything else. All together you get a really reliable fast character to fillin the gaps with slower less accurate heavy hitters, one you don't have to worry about micromanaging. He really ups team synergy overall. Also he's got defend.
I'm probably going to sideline mite soon. I don't wanna. But if I ever get this toko I'm hunting (just for looks even, I don't really care about utility) I'll probably have to finally bench him.

I haven't really messed with feeding my familiars, what kind of numbers we talking to max out those hearts?
i got the trophy for maxing out the 50/50 bonus like 60 hours in. you could do it faster if you were more diligent with feeding your dude 10 treats after every 10 battles, but that shit is tedious. it takes a shitload of treats to max that stuff out though, either way.
also, 89hrs50min platinum trophy get. i really fucking love this game, still even after grinding it out for the trophies and stuff.
My monolith has 225 defense at tier level 2 with yoohoo. I went from barely passing the 2nd fight E rank at the Solisseum to beating C rank by yoohoo'ing it up.
Face punch monolith tactics deliver.
I don't think I could take a class without sparring. That would be like a class without techniques. Sparring has value not only as an important (necessary) step in applying your techniques to fighting, but also because it provides a rush and feeling of elation, confidence, and joyful exhaustion that can only be matched by ... oh shit, I am describing sex again. Sorry everyone. - Epicurus

One of the Tier 3's (Paleolith, I believe. Whichever one gets storm spells) gets the resurrection spell, too. It's pretty ridiculous. Just pump its M.Defense with treats and you're set.
I haven't really messed with feeding my familiars, what kind of numbers we talking to max out those hearts?
You'd be best to think of it in terms of tiers of treats. They have 5 tiers of treats. There are five hearts. It takes roughly the same amount of the equivelant tier for that heart. If you use a tier 1 treat on a the third heart it will take forever. If you use a tier 1 treat on the fourth heart you are going to cry yourself to sleep at night. Using a tier 1 treat on the fifth heart was actually mentioned in Dante's Inferno at one point as a punishment for treachery.
Tier 5 on tier 5 only requires a handful, you just have to craft them.
Crafting them goes like this.
Tier 1,2,3 spring from taking the previous tier and doing stuff to them to make the next tier. Most of what you need is not hard to find in various hootiques.
Tier 4 can be crafted wholesale from tier 1 again, instead of needing to craft tier 3 first. Then you make tier 5 from tier 4. It's not super hard to craft these once you have all your travel abilities and can go grab the appropriate shiny points, but I don't think it would be really viable before that. It's more or less just a bit of popping over to this shiny here and that shiny there etc then whipping it all up. You'll remember which one gives which when it actually comes down to wanting to craft them, so I'd look up what you want to craft now and note down what the items are then keep an eye out for them as you play the game. You can't mass produce them with cash like you can with tier 1-3 though, so you do have to make a bit of a habit of checking those spawns, or go steal those items from the appropriate monsters etc.
So we got a purrloiner back near Castaway Cove. She instantly fell in love with it and actually maxed it out before metamorphosising it to the next tier each time. It has bar none the highest single target damage at level 53 as a puss in boats we have. My tier 2 dino will only hit around 300 with his skills. Purrcy can drop 600 on some poor fool with his single target attack. He's an incredible boss killer now.
Late game spoiler.
Our pirate cat basically soloed the skeleton pirate captain since the other two had tanky or low dps characters out. To make it even more epic I actually successfully evaded the bosses steal attack the first time.
After obliterating it handily pirate kitty then went back to playing with his tail.
Kinda wish he had warcry or time to shine.
It's mostly the new skill he got that pushed him over into amazing. It seems to have a really good multiplier. Drop Cut.
Also he moves a lot faster than the previous tier.

It gets more stats with Oliver than Swaine.
also that's probably something those who don't should know.
You know how you can switch familiars and when you do you see three icons on one of your party members? That's the familiars sign. If you match up those signs you get better stats. It's not a whole lot numerically, but stats do matter in this game. For example Swaine is better with robots. My robot tank on Oliver was around 198 when I first checked this. On Swaine it's defense was 209. I think it might be percentage based, so it will matter the most on the minnest of maxest familiars.

It has bar none the highest single target damage at level 53 as a puss in boats we have. My tier 2 dino will only hit around 300 with his skills. Purrcy can drop 600 on some poor fool with his single target attack. He's an incredible boss killer now.
Late game spoiler.
I gave my Purrloiner to Swaine but I didn't max it out before each metamorphosis, only waited till it got all its skills then moved on to Cutpurrse and Puss in Boats (the swag coat)
also that's probably something those who don't should know.
