I find the whole Injustice comic spinoff to be incredibly odd. It must be selling, or something. Just...I know the game wasn't bad, but it just seems to incongruous that comic is still going strong when, well. In video game years, six months is almost three years ago.

All of this, though, would be redeemed with an Injustice: New Gods fighting game.

It's the new ROM.* The books is pretty decent - probably the most nuanced take on "Superman Goes Evil!" I have read.

    * In case you don't know, ROM was a Marvel comic licensed from a Mattel toy. The toy sold like shit and quickly vanished, but ROM kept putting out issues for years and the characters and events from the comic still come up all of the time in the Marvel U.

    On the other hand

    ROM is awesome

    whereas Injustice is shite

Injustice feels like the DC Comic version of Plan 9 From Outer Space. To me, its so bad that many times it reaches the realm of being funny. But then, I was raised on movies like Plan 9, Giant Gila Monsters, and The Claw, so my taste in entertainment is pretty warped.

I love the Injustice comic. It's probably one of my most anticipated comics each week, mostly since it's on its own and they can actually do unpredictable things with it.

But now it's on hiatus until 2014...

It's coming back in January. They said originally they had a definitive end in mind. The last page of today's issue said "End of Year One", which would make sense as it's where the game would pick up from.

So I'm guessing it's a combination of they didn't know how popular it would be, and also Tom Taylor is now writing Earth-2

I like it, too. The first few issues were rough, probably because that was the period when they had to tie it closely to the video game plot, but it has really become something neat once it got rolling. I loved this sequence:

It's actually a DC digital comic, so the normal DC Comics editorial problems don't apply.

So what's the verdict on Villain's Month? Creatively, I feel like they tried to make an event out of a bunch of forgettable tie-ins without enough story to stand on their own. How's it doing in terms of sales as well?

I think the only one I've seen so far that looks good was a Tomasi Two-Face issue, because it was more in the now post CSA arrival as opposed to trying to give an origin story. It reminded me a lot of the Face the Face story from OYL.

I liked Snyder's Riddle issue, and I think it's because it was written by the book's usual writer, wasn't a forced combination of an origin and tie-in, and was more of a prelude of a future story than a useless chapter in the CSA story.

I picked up the Poison Ivy and Two Face issues and I kind of thought they both sucked. I'd say my view is slightly skewed in that the Two Face issue was probably better than I'm giving it credit for because I don't like Two Face and the Poison Ivy issue was probably crappier than I thought it was because I really love her...

Max Landis (I know...) had a rant about that on twitter.

The good point he brought up was, has any other Bat villain done something in that level of carnage and victims? Doesn't this put Haley in a completely new place...which is odd, considering that she has a new series coming up.

The story seemed so perfunctory that I can't imagine it being the basis of an ongoing series.

Didn't the Joker kill a bunch of kids during No Man's Land when he also killed Sarah Essen?

No, he was going to kill a bunch of babies if nobody found them, but Sarah Essen found him. He only killed her, and spared the children.

It's actually one of the more effective Joker moments because when she first finds him he isn't smiling at all, but grins and puts on his shtick while confronting her, and after she's dead the smile disappears again. Before he realizes Sarah Essen is there, he seems to be calmly playing with one of the babies, even softly whispering his life philosophy to it. It was an unguarded moment for the character, and all the creepier because of it.

Come to think of it, it may have been the last great Joker moment to date. There have been some good Joker stories since, don't get me wrong, but I'm not sure any of them topped that.

I know that blowing those kids up seems like a big deal, but it's kind of dwarfed by alternate reality super-villains coming in and blocking the sun as anarchy rules the streets. I'd be really surprised if the Harley issue gets mentioned again.

Ra's al Ghul. He killed a shitload of Gothamites in Contagion. Aside from the Joker I assume he's got the highest body counts from the rogues gallery. Lady Shiva has quite the body count herself.

Talia must have killed thousands of people in Batman Incorporated.

In fact, a lot of Batman's villains are mass murderers now.

Yeah, no Joker stories have grabbed me since NML. Then again, I have a soft spot for NML. I was tempted to get the expanded NML trades when they re-released them, but I didn't have the cash. I was kind of put off by attempts to explain the Joker backstory and give him a definitive Origin story. The Joker is best when he's a force of chaos that comes from nowhere, and his only purpose in life is to "play" with Batman, or any other hapless heroes that are nearby.

I wish they'd do a Joker story where it shows him planting all these false clues as to his backstory. This would effectively reset his origin to "who knows".

I also preferred it when it was a mystery as to whether or not the Joker knew who Batman was. I pretty much figured he knew for quite a while, but didn't want to spoil his game.

One tradition regarding Joker I've always liked is the hints that there's something supernatural about him. Same with Scarface/The Ventriloquist, and the idea that Gotham is cursed, actually. Every now and then a writer implies Joker's ability to cheat death isn't entirely natural, or there's a story where Joker's madness lets him see/understand things he shouldn't be able to. Frank Miller even has an Arkham guard talk about it in The Dark Knight Returns, and in the scene where Joker dies Batman thinks he can almost sense some sort of evil spirit fleeing the corpse.

It only works if you hint and imply, though. He's probably just a disfigured psycho... but maybe he's something else. You never know for sure. I'm very thankful no writer to date has tried to bluntly explain it in some elaborate arc where it's revealed Joker is possessed by the anti-Spectre or some shit.
