what are essentials classes lacking apart from variety

because they seem to me to have features and powers and etc. like any other, just
    fewer options within them

i've never actually made an Essentials class but isn't the Slayer supposed to be a destroyer of worlds

It can be. The problem with the Slayer is that it's a little too well geared toward a charging build, and so you end up with a lot of Slayers just being charge-spammers and it gets old real fast.

The one thing I think they really missed out on was the opportunity to use the Slayer to make an archer fighter build. No reason it has to be melee only.

Well, off the top of my head:

Class features: E-classes are generally built around one ability score only, two at most. There's one I can think of (the Protector Druid) that has a primary and two different secondaries, but almost all the rest are either primary only (thief), or primary/secondary (slayer).

    Power selection: yeah.

Additional features: Things like Ritual Caster. No e-class has it, because Essentials is partially meant to be played without them.

I'm not a huge fan of the way they made Essentials classes but hey, I understood the need for them.

I just wish the Blackguard was actually customizable or

    good at stuff

because the idea of playing a Blackguard is rad

I am absolutely smitten with the blackguard

they're mechanically at the same level of power as any other class, it's just they're really easy to break, or incredibly hard to break.

like bladesinger? i didn't even try to and i had that class busted open. Knight? not so much?

our party's thief is ridiculous, and only has maybe a quarter of the charge kit on him. If that much (one item, one feat, I think).

A lot fewer options, in some cases. For the Vampire class, literally all you do is choose between two utility powers at level 2 and what feats. The only other choice you have in the character until level 11 is where your ability score increases go at 4 and 8.

Vampire is a bad example. It is precisely the most 'railroad' class in the game, bar none.

The only acceptable vampire is the Vampire vampire, Vampire MC vampire.

That is one complete thing, not the same thing stated twice.

I would just like to point out that the character I submitted to @Stilts is, in fact, a werewolf warforged.

I just decided on Explorer as my character's theme. A firesoul genasi really would not like to deal with burning hair smell all the time.

So, the Vampire, Class, Vryloka Race, Vampire Bloodline Feat . . . but if you are already Vampire Class, you shouldn't be able to take the Vampire MC feats, if there are any.

Sorry yeah I meant the vampire bloodline feat.

There's another damn vampire out there, somewhere.

Vryloka Vampire with the Dhampyr bloodline feat and.... oh dammit someone knows the last bit.

I like cran-apple juice, tastiest fluid out there. Anyway, are Ardents any good? All of the psionic classes confused me except for the monk. I like the whole thing of your powers being created by your emotions, like Starfire or Mr. Furious. I need to watch Teen Titans and Mystery Men again.

    Update on the selection process:

I have narrowed it down to two pairings.

One forumer is guaranteed to be in the game.

The other one who gets in depends on which team is picked.

I have sent a PM to Denada to get his thoughts on the two options.

Ardents are good. Depending on how you build them, they can do a lot of different things. They're melee only (well, or lazy), but other than that limitation they're quite serviceable.

I don't know, but with all the ideas that were submitted, it'd be really awesome if somebody would DM another game. Maybe a different setting, just for a little more differentiation. It'd be a shame for all those characters to just sort of get tossed.
