[Marvel Heroic Roleplaying] Breakout!

edited January 2013 in Critical Failures
So I have recently discovered this game and have been badly wanting to try it out. As I'm lacking in real life buddies to get a group together, I thought I would try my hand at a pbp here.

I want to run the Breakout event from the core book, and then if things go well spin off from there. I'm brand new to the game so I'm very welcoming to others who are also new to it, we can learn what the hell we're doing together! I'm fine with people experienced with the system, too, it's always nice to have someone point out when I'm doing it wrong.

So I'd like to get a good 3-5 people to start things up. The game seems pretty welcoming towards new people jumping in and swapping out(never too hard to have another hero just happen to be nearby) so if I can get at least 3 to start initially I say we'd be good to go. I'm cool with people who want to play as already-made characters or ones who want to make their own(either an original or a Marvel hero that hasn't been officially released). I have bought all the books in PDF form this past week so I have all the characters available for people that don't have them, here's a list of them for those who don't have any books and would like to just pick someone and have me give them the stats:

Aegis
Alex Power
Amadeus Cho
Arachne
Archangel
Armor
Armory
Beast
Bishop
Black Cat
Black Panther
Black Widow
Bullseye
Cable
Caliban
Captain
Captain America
Chase Stein
Cloak
Cloud 9
Colleen Wing
Colossus
Cyclops
Dagger
Daredevil
Darkhawk
Deadpool
Doctor Strange
Domino
Dust
Elixir
Elsa Bloodstone
Emma Frost
Falcon
Forge
Gauntlet
Goliath
Hawkeye(Clint Barton)
Hawkeye(Kate Bishop)
Hardball
Hellcat
Hellion
Hercules
Howard the Duck
Hulk
Hulkling
Human Torch
Iceman
Invisible Woman
Iron Fist
Iron Man
Jack Power
Julie Power
Justice
Karolina Dean
Katie Power
Komodo
Luke Cage
Machine Man
Magma
Marvel Girl
Mercury
Microbe
Micromax
Mister Fantastic
Miss Marvel
Misty Knight
Molly Hayes
Monet
Monica Rambeau
Moon Knight
Moonstone
Multiple Man
MVP
Mystique
Namorita
Nico Minoru
Nightcrawler
Nighthawk
Night Thrasher
Omega Sentinel
Paladin
Patriot
Penance
Punisher
Psylocke
Radioactive Man
Rage
Rockslide
Rogue
Sabra
Sabretooth
Sentry
Shadowcat
Shang-Chi
Shatterstar
She-Hulk
Siryn
Slapstick
Songbird
Speed
Speedball
Spider-Man
Spider-Woman
Stature
Storm
Strong Guy
Sub-Mariner
Surge
Swordsman
Tabitha Smith
Thing
Thor
Thor Girl
Tigra
Turbo
Trauma
Ultra Girl
Venom
Victor Mancha
Vision
War Machine
Wasp
Wiccan
Wolfsbane
Wolverine
Wonder Man
X-23
Xavin
Yellowjacket

There's a few straight-up evil characters in there like Sabretooth, Moonstone, and Bullseye that should probably be avoided. Though if you think you can make them work, go nuts.

I suppose we'll use orokos for dice rolling, seems to be the norm.

Anyway, please, if you're interested but have no idea what you're doing with this game, go ahead and sign up! Because neither do I! I'll do my best to keep things going and help anyone who needs to learn the game do so while I do.

So...who wants to beat up supervillains?

I just got my hands on the rulebook for this system and I have been itching to give it a try. I was even thinking of running Breakout as a pbp myself, but I'd love to trying playing it since the chance has presented itself.

Would we be allowed to do our own take on the Marvel characters or do you want us to lift them straight out of the books? I'm leaning towards Spider-Man since he is my favorite Marvel character.

I'm very interested. I have the core book, but I haven't been able to drum up interest IRL to make a game happen. In a perfect world, I'd be someone from the Exiles, but as until they do AoA, I'm torn between Hawkeye and Nightcrawler. :)

The weirdest/coolest thing about this game is that it basically doesn't give a shit about character creation and party member parity at all. Moon Knight and the goddamn Sentry can play together and it seems like it just works totally fine.

I'll pick a character when I get off shift.

Ps it will probably be Howard the Duck

  • LockedOnTargetLockedOnTarget Registered User regular

Well that's three people interested so far so that'll be enough to play. Still spots open. When you guys know who you want to play as for sure let me know, and tell me if you need me to give you the stats for them. Once we have that settled I will get things underway, if no one else signs up by the time that happens new arrivals can just jump in the middle of things later.

I'm going to stick with Spider-Man and I'll go ahead and use the character stats from the book.

I don't know if there's a good way to look at the mechanics without having one of the books, but it uses a version of the Cortex system if you have any knowledge of that.

It's a dice pool system that focuses more on actions making narrative sense and being creative with what you have than a really structured game like DnD or Mutants and Masterminds.

Savage Dragon / Lobo team up.

I'm sort of hoping Dresdephile goes with Nightcrawler, Hawkeye would be great too though. We would have the best banter squad ever.

Wolverine will be the greatest straight man the world has ever known.

  • LockedOnTargetLockedOnTarget Registered User regular
    Okay, so, milestones.

@Sakutian there is a different Spidey milestone in the Civil War book if you want to use it:

    Coping With Humor

1 XP: When you crack a joke while inflicting stress on an opponent.
3 XP: When you point out how absurd a situation has become.
10 XP: When you either stop joking and declare a situation deadly serious or vow to retire the mantle of Spider-Man forever.

@Captain Carrot there is also an alternate Wolverine milestone in there:

    "Now It's My Turn!"
1 XP: When you separate from your allies, accepting no help, so that you can hunt an enemy down alone.
3 XP: When you inflict trauma on a villain due to an asset created by an ally.
10 XP: When you either admit you need an ally's help, declaring that they are good to have around in a scrap or explain to an ally why they are a danger to themselves and any team they serve on.

There are also some event-related milestones anyone can choose to start out with:

    Round Up The Fugitives
1 XP: When you defeat and capture a fugitive from The Raft.
3 XP: Whe you choose the let a fugitive go in order to help an innocent bystander or an ally.
10 XP: When you track down the person(s) behind the breakout and either turn them in to the authorities or join them.

    SHIELD Super-Agent
1 XP: When you work with SHIELD agents to neutralize a villainous foe.
3 XP: When you act against the orders of SHIELD command for the good of others.
10 XP: When you choose to stand either with SHIELD or with he rest of your tem when they're in opposition.

    Liberate The Hulk
1 XP: When you find and introduce yourself to Bruce Banner or The Hulk.
3 XP: When you convince Banner or Hulk to leave his cell or assist during the breakout.
10 XP: When you convince Banner to rejoin society, or convince him to remain locked up for the safety of the world.

Everyone can choose two milestones to pursue, picked from either their character specific ones or the event ones, or a combination of both. You can also just pick one for now and add a second one during a transition scene later if you want to see where things go first. As things go on I'll add new milestones. If you have a good idea for a milestone for your character, go ahead and put one together, and we'll work it in.

  • Captain CarrotCaptain Carrot Alexandria, VARegistered User regular
I think I'll go with the berserk one and Now It's My Turn, and ignore the "declare an ally/enemy is now an enemy/ally".

  • dresdenphiledresdenphile Watch out for snakes!Registered User regular
I think I'll go just Swashbuckler for now (as I don't know about what sort of sexy results could happen on The Raft), and probably add Round up the Fugitives or Liberate the Hulk when it comes to that.

  • LockedOnTargetLockedOnTarget Registered User regular
Something tells me you will get some mileage out of the "threaten another hero with violence" trigger.

  • LockedOnTargetLockedOnTarget Registered User regular
Those event milestones are totally spoilers. They totally give away that a breakout happens in the Breakout event.

  • SakutianSakutian Registered User regular
I thinki I might drop Team Player in favor of Round Up The Fugitives.

I think I'm gonna get the ball rolling and allow you guys to do whatever roleplaying you want in the opening transition scene. Go ahead and set things up for your character however you like, as long as you're in New York or in/on your way to the Raft. You can also use this time to spend your starting plot point on an asset if you wish. From here on I'll put OOC comments and data in spoiler tags. Give me a sec to type an intro up and then go nuts.
