Playing this on PC again is so great. The game really is horrendous on the ps 3. I'm shocked they even released it tbh.

Not to be PC master race here, but the PC version even knocks the Xbox version out of the park. I got every single achievement before I got Skyrim in a Steam sale and I'm playing it through again. It's that much better.

Nice to see the argonians finally looking like argonians.

The first version of them they showed off were pretty weird.

Ok zenomax, you have my attention. But the mmo genre is very much hit or miss entirely I'm hoping this is a hit but I don't expect it.

Addon support is a big plus.

1.9 is out! Any opinions on whether I should update? How many mods does it break?
My guess is all of them.

Painless enough. Especially compared to 1.5 or so. Just had to update SKSE, though it was a good reminder to download the most recent version of SkyUI.

So what do I need outside of steam workshop to get some of the best mods going for this? Is All that wrye bash stuff still a thing that needs to be done to get the better mods?

You don't need Steam Workshop at all (and a lot of the better mods aren't even on it). Skyrim Nexus is basically your one stop shop. You'll also want SKSE.

Don't bother with the work shop, just download Nexus Mod Manager and use their sites.

All I really do besides that is use BOSS to auto sort the load order and TESVEDIT to make merged patches.

Some of the fancier mods will need SKSE to run so you'll want to grab that too.

What are essential mods just for graphics/world changes?

I'm not looking to add anything to the game, like items or quests or new mechanics. I just want to make what is there already look better.

I remember some fairly unbelievable overhauls for Oblivion back in the day and I haven't really played Skyrim for a year now. Got a new PC recently, it's essentially a nuclear reactor and is powering my house, so I can turn everything up to eleven. What do?

No, I don't think you should have to.

I don't use the workshop but most programs should be working with the data folders in your skyrim directory where all the mods are stored so you should be fine switching to a different mod manager.

It actually finds the mods automatically, I'm assuming its capable of finding any updates those mods selected via the workshop would need? Either way that is pretty neat. Haven't installed BOSS, just got the NMM and SKSE and it seems to be fine so far. Now to find some good combat mods!

Follow along here with me for a minute.
Ive started up a new game with the intention of being a full time spell chucker. Ive installed Invested Magic at this point to make alot of things a bit more permanent.

At some point in Riften I picked up raise zombie and totally forgotten about it until I run across that fight the companion are having with the giant. With the giant dead I chortle a bit and toss my raise zombie spell on the corpse, Success! At this point im wondering if that should even be possible at this level but who knows with the mix of mods I have running right now.
So I have the giant tooling around and im getting pissed that hes so slow. He did manage to be a great distraction with the first dragon fight so I decide I will grant him his request. No such luck, I cant even target the thing with the unsummon spell. Combine that with the mod I have running and this brute is going to be around for a full week.

Ok we can fix this! Ill just use raise zombie on another faster corpse. Tool around a bit and its dark now. My giant finds a lone wolf and wacks it dead. Providence!
Ok raise zombie on the wolf and Wala! Yeah! Zombie wolf!...... Zombie wolf come on!.... little bastards stuck on the other side of the river that my giant clubed it to.

Grrr. Ok reraise the giant... NOPE. not going to happen. Its too strong for the spell!

    Great.

Ok running back to town for a minute.

Whats this? A rabbit i killed earlier? Lets raise it! If all my zombies are going to be useless lets just make it the cutest useless!
As my necrotic light falls on the rabbits corpse a scene of utter horror unveils itself to me. Standing in the dark I could not see the tiny rabbits sitting next to the corpse of its dearly departed mother. As the mother arises from its dark skinless fate the twin baby's stop in horror, staring at their mother. The mother starts to move, the still breathing twins scatter. I proceed to watch the mother chase after one of the baby's and then I shudder at the revulsion of the terrible terrible thing I have unleashed on the world.

How does this legendary skill thing work?

Like, I get Sneaking to 100. I have X number of perks picked in it. I take it to Legendary.

Now I have 15 Sneaking, + a dragon icon that means "+100". Do I also have all those perks? Do I get the perks back? Do I get additional perks for going from 15-100 all over again? Or is there still a perk cap?

Legendary difficulty is just Master difficulty with even bigger numbers, right?

  • NuzakNuzak Registered User regular
you don't have the perks, and you don't get your perk points refunded, and you don't get extra perk points, and there's no perk cap any more now as long as you keep prestiging by making your skills legendary.

making skills legendary removes the level cap, previously held in place by making all skills cap at 100, which only allowed for 80 level ups. now, no skills have to end at 100.

apart from pleasing people who like returning a skill to baby status, this means you can get to 81 just by enhancing the skills you like, by constantly refreshing them, rather than working on alchemy and speech and pickpocketing for your warrior's last 5 levels.

    Then get extra perk points?

This is incorrect. I just pulled up Skyrim and legendary'ed my enchanting tree. All 8 points I spent in that tree were refunded.

To re-iterate, you lose the perks that you spent points on, but you get the points refunded.

But it doesnt do that, because when you reset the skill and get your perks back, you just have to spend those perk points on the same perks again.

  • ChrysisChrysis Registered User regular
You reset, and it refunds any perk points you spent. You then level the skill up, and in the process gain another main level. Which grants you another perk point. So you get all the perk points spent in the legendary tree, plus new points gained from levelling up while reskilling that tree.

Ok good, It wasn't just me that didn't get that.

So the way it works is you take a skill to 100.

You then set it to legendary.

It becomes 15, but is really still 100.

You have 0 perks spent in this tree, BUT have the perks again to spend as you see fit.

As you go from 15 to 100, you gain levels, gaining MORE perks than you had originally.

At 100, you effectively have 185 skill in that particular skill, and can do this entire process over again.

Ergo, no level cap, no perk cap, play until your head explodes?

holy shit..... that..... that's actually quite daunting. I've never hit 100 in these games save for Morrowind where it was insanely easy to 'game' the levelling system. Guess I have a challenge!

Actually, I may be wrong about the "says 15 but is really 100" thing, I read that somewhere but stuff I'm reading now says it's just a straight reset to 15, but you do get more perks -- and more HP / MP / STA -- as you go.

The idea being that you can hit the old max level or beyond with only "your" skills. Like if you're a thief, you won't have to wear heavy armor or spam restoration to get those last 5 levels.

Specifically, it was this article that confused me:
Instead of merely bumping up the available number of levels, Bethesda opted to swipe a page from Activision's Call of Duty play book. Once you've downloaded the 1.9 patch, you'll find that any skills you've raised to the top of the game's 100 point system can now be reverted to level 15. This both denotes the skill as a "Legendary Skill," and allows players to further enhance their abilities beyond the original high water mark. As Bethesda points out, this "effectively removes the overall level cap," though it seems to only change the numbers your character is able to generate. To put it more simply, improving your sword fighting skills beyond that 100 point limit is now possible, but will only increase the amount of damage that particular skill is capable of generating and won't offer you new skills or any special attack animations.

Spent two hours today figuring out how to hex mod an xbox save file so my wife could get back a dragonmask she lost to a bug. (Note: your house mannequins eat dragon masks.) It wasn't hard once I stopped trying to use the "barrel item editor," which doesn't work. Let me know if anyone wants the details, or just follow this guy's guide. The only shitty thing was that Horizon tried to install at least two separate adware programs.

I basically haven't played any game except Skyrim since it came out. We even bought an xbox 360 just to play the DLC. If it's allowed in this thread, has anyone else found ANYthing else close to scratch the same itch? I'm open to new games so long as they're more or less exactly like Skyrim..... There just aren't many games out there like Skyrim, especially on consoles. If you have a PS3, I've heard Dragon's Dogma is a pretty nifty RPG, though it isn't quite as sandboxy as is Skyrim. Otherwise, I might suggest Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas if you haven't played them. The setting in both games is post-apocalyptic, but they run on an earlier version of the same engine and have similar 'go anywhere, do what you want' game play.

Skyrim is truly an amazing creature, especially on the PC. Steam tells me I have 554 hours played in this single-player game and yet I'm still playing it. I find new mods that add crazy things to the game (like one that changes all the character animations for casting and 1-handed sword, making spellblades look awesome), and I've jazzed up the graphics so much that I have actually stopped to watch a sunset or to look down over a valley after cresting a hill. I love this game.

A while ago I made a mod that made it so your skill level was uncapped but when it reached 101 it reverted back to 100. The idea was so you could keep leveling using a level 100 skill. This was not to push up the level cap, but to mitigate how the leveling system makes using level 100 skills undesirable, and allow you to keeping playing your character as you like.

I think this is a more elegant solution than the legendary thing, which sounds kind of silly to me.

I like simple mods. A lot the mods that exist do things that I want, but in an overly complicated way that I don't like. For example, for a simple 'needs' mod I turned off health regen and made foods give a small healing effect that lasted a long time. Not sure if I got the balance quite right though. For a weather mod I'd simply like cold weather/water etc to do a small amount of frost damage. People make these things way more complicated than they need to be.

I made some pretty complicated changes to the levelling system, whereby the player gains stats directly from skill increases, and never actually increases in level. The player was tagged as essential (meaning 'death' meant you went down on your knees like essential npcs), suffering permanent stat damage in the process. I was planning to implement perk books, but I decided the whole thing was all a bit much and went back to playing vanilla. This all occurred in the context of level scaling being off, obviously. The no death thing meant I was fearless and could just persist to take on hard enemies. When I played with level scaling off with regular leveling restored it was a totally different game, where wandering the world and entering any dungeon was very dangerous and terrifying until you became quite high level.
