But our brethren, the Dwemer, scorned the Daedra, and mocked our foolish rituals, and preferred instead their gods of Reason and Logic.
And also consider that the guys who did the entire "apply the scientific method to magic" thing did so to the heart of a god, and thus erased themselves from existence. No one wants to be the Dwemer.
There is evidence to suggest it has less to do with the heart of a god bit and more to do with something else. But yes, they fucked up big time.
It's possible it's more that they did it to one of the items holding reality itself together.

Nobody is really sure what happened to the dwemer.
But what we can say for certain though is that their mysteriously advanced culture allows for a lot of awesome lore friendly(ish) reasons to create mod guns and lightsabers as long as they're golden and dwemerish.
So basically once again we're back to "man why am I even saving this planet anyway" :P
Look, it's not perfect what with cornerstones of the universe's existence being actual items that can be manipulated and possibly destroyed but It's the only place I have to store the pants or skirt I took off of each of my Dark Brotherhood assassination targets.
Because in Oblivion, it led to scenarios like picking up a spoon in a locked basement at 3 AM with Sneak on and suddenly STOP YOU'VE VIOLATED THE LAW right in your face.
Or trying to put back something you accidentally knocked over in a shop (because Havoc lives up to its name) and suddenly everyone present is freaking out and/or drawing steel.

Yeah but that was only because of the psychic guards.
Take them away (and they did in Skyrim thank god) and I think the idea is fine.
I really hope they get rid of stolen items forever being marked as stolen for the next game. If I steal a sword from someone in Whiterun, I should be able to sell it to someone in Solitude (without the perk).

Agreed so hard.
Theres no way some dumbass shopkeep can tell that the generic iron sword I swiped was stolen from some guy on the other side of the country that he's probably never even met.

Maybe, maybe not. Swords weren't mass produced and often would have a mark indicating information about its creation by the swordsmith so they're not exactly bulk commodities and shopkeepers would be some of the smarter people in a town or city given the need to handle numbers, read and write into ledgers, and appraise goods. It IS extremely weird for other stuff like raw gems though.
I don't mind it much though. The point is to get you to use the thieves guild fences and individually distinguish items as stolen. It was ridiculous and comical in Morrowind where I would steal everything from one store, walk over to the next store to sell my stolen goods before stealing everything from that store to sell to the next until I looped back to the first store.

There should be a Literacy skill, so you can learn to read and erase the names that people apparently write on everything they own.
Also, I've now mastered Destruction magic, almost mastered One-Handed, have high sneak and lockpick skills, and an array of insanely good equipment. This is pretty much how I feel about venturing into the Thief and Assassin's Guild questlines: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQn-vulThcY
I am suddenly saddened I cannot enchant blank slips of paper like I could in Morrowind and walk around with a binder full of skeleton keys fueled by rat souls.
What time period is Skyrim closest to in Earth's history?
Why do Ren fairs take clothing styles from all the wrong periods?
If I had a "time traveler" from Skyrim's future, but our past, what would be a good time period?

Aside from magic and ruins and such? Late middle ages or so?
As to time traveler? You'd have to have to ask Kirkbride (there's some very very weird stuff with future that's been written). Also, the canon doesn't allow for it - the only documented instance was Alduin's banishment. And that not only tore reality, it required an Elder Scroll and the three strongest Tongues in the world at the time.
Edit: that reminds me - is there an MMM equivalent for Skyrim? I didn't see it in the OP, but I may have missed it.
Skyrim Immersive Creatures is the MMM equivalent for Skyrim. I don't really like most of the stuff it adds (even the lore friendly version), so I don't use it myself. I do, however, like and use its sub-mod Armored Skeletons and The Walking Dead, which only adds SIC's armored skeletons and other basic undead varieties. It also includes armored non-human skeletons based on Beast Skeletons, which is awesome, though I believe you still want Beast Skeletons installed alongside it for its hand-placed non-human skeletons.
I'm probably going to write up an updated mod recommendation post now that a bunch of people are asking and I have some time. I think too much has changed to keep linking the older ones I've posted.
I'm definitely ready to start up a big Skyrim delve after finally picking up the DLC in the form of Legendary Edition on this Steam sale, so an updated mod recommendation list would be super useful and appreciated.
@Dashui said he would be updating the OP soon, since I've been pushing for this too.
Those creature mods listed are also what I'm looking for: I want to expand the already expansive world as much as possible so long as it's A) not too silly (no Terminators or Godzilla or whatever) and not too game-breaking (I don't want to suddenly get one-shotted by some guy's lvl 100 death bunny).
Same goes for environments. Wasn't there a mod from a guy who spent years making an area as big as the vanilla world, and was even hired by Bethesda? Is that mod available? Is it good?
The mod you're thinking of is Falskaar. What I played of it wasn't quite up to par with the official stuff, but it's very good for amateur work. Also, I want to say he was hired by some other AAA studio. Bungie maybe?

Oh, its not really a time traveler, just someone from a human looking land where the people are bit more advanced.

I haven't actually gotten to Falskaar yet but looking forward to it despite the lack of new land it gives off, a lot of vanilla textures but for a lot of content, I'm not going to complain.
Good lord, a lot of quest mods piled up while I was away from this game.

OMG. So, I for some reason got it in my head to install Oblivion on an old PC of mine and mod it up for my kid to play. Problem being I'm trying to keep it PG-13 and some mod added very nice and very anatomically correct bodies... but I have no idea which mod. I intentionally didn't install any body mods. I did install some mods that affect characters... specifically Oblivion Character Overhaul and Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul... but neither of those mention anything about replacing bodies with nude versions in their descriptions.
Anybody know how to figure out what mod did this? I'd post my mod list if I knew how. I'm familiar with the ole "deactivate em one by one" deal, but anyone know a better way?
Rrrrr... even after deactivating every mod there's still wang.
Oh, forgot the omods. Turns out it was friggin Deadly Reflex... a mod that mentions nude bodies nowhere in it's description.
I wish I could experience Skyrim again as a Skyrim virgin.

I sometimes wonder if any of these custom race mods with nudity actually make underwear equippable or do they just assume everybody in Tamriel is going commando.
I'm actually using a custom race in Skyrim right now, the Frosmer, was quite a surprise when I noticed my dovah schlong was just hanging out.
I don't mind it, it just gets pretty cold in skyrim sometimes. The loincloth is the most valuable armor there is.

I would think you could enable the mod and then just delete the skeleton nif file it adds. It should revert to default (underwear) then.
How does one get Dawnguard started? I heard talking to a Hold guard does it but they've only pointed me to a couple of spots that aren't vampire-related.

Three ways:
1) Random vampire attack happens
2) Random guard conversation about it
3) Just go to Fort Dawnguard already

I haven't played the game in 2 and a half years. I am still setting up mods the way I want, but I installed Alternate Start - Live Another Life and made myself start in the middle of nowhere. So I've been wondering about the whole vampire/not vampire thing, and then I remembered Better Vampires while wandering around near Markarth.
I think I may have just found a solution to that craphole of a town.

As far as alternate start mods go, I much prefer Skyrim Unbound. I think they both have similar options for where and how you start, but it integrates dragons and the main quest faaaaaaaar better. Live Another Life makes you go through a dumb quest that sends you all over the southern half of Skyrim before finally taking you to Helgen. Skyrim Unbound lets you have dragons flying around (or not, if you choose) with or without soul absorption. You start the main quest by absorbing your first dragon soul, no matter where it is, and then you get summoned by the Greybeards. It's a much more organic implementation. It isn't on the Nexus, but there's a link on the workshop page to a non-workshop version, which you can then add to the mod manager of your choice.
I've been using Vampiric Thirst as my vampire overhaul. I really like it. The mod creator based it off of Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. It's actually rather immersive.
I like trying to seduce people into becoming my blood dolls, cause if the seduce fails, they mock you and then I just take what they will not give.

A slight spoiler if you have not finished the first ruins quest on Dawnguard:
I went on a large detour into Dragonborn DLC with the vampire lady. She is a good companion and is unkillable.
Can you take her to the Dawngaurd people? I did not try it.
