I kinda wish I could buy just those Verse cards. Steelbooks are less of a selling point for me with Switch games, since they're so tiny that I've just been using a plastic collection case that I can fit in my pocket.
I mean, I guess Bayo 2 is the newer one with more Nintendo support, but it's still weird to divide it like that.
I came into this thread to ask if someone (me) who missed both Bayonetta 1 & 2 should start with 1 or go straight to 2 but with math like that it seems clear I should just start at the beginning.

Definitely start with Bayo 1. Bayo 2 directly references a lot of stuff from the first game so it will be pretty confusing. Also the first game is amazing

As someone who played both back-to-back for the first time on the WiiU, I liked 1 a fair bit better than 2; I don't see a real argument for skipping it.

As someone who played both back-to-back for the first time on the WiiU, I hated 1 with a burning fire, but 2 was my GOTY; you should definitely skip it.

You know what just occurred to me. When the Wii U version of Bayo 1 and 2 came out, we didn't yet have a Bayonetta amiibo (she wasn't even in Smash yet). Now I'm curious if those amiibo will do anything special in those two games on Switch. At the very least I expect they will in Bayo 3....

Amiibo support is confirmed for 2. No idea what it'll be, though.
If it were me, I'd have Bowser, Peach, Samus, Fox, or Falco amiibos immediately unlock the coture bullets for the Nintendo costumes, maybe have the Mario Amiibo unlock the Chain Chomp, and the Bayonetta Amiibo unlock every other costume for free.

Thanks to all for the opinions. I'll start with 1 and be ready for it be better than 2 or way worse than 2 and also confusing all around. That should be enough ammunition to set thoroughly mixed expectations.

@swaylow Bayonetta is like the Devil May Cry series, except the protagonist beats the shit out of her enemies while being as sexy as possible. Sex is a weapon she uses to brutalize her enemies.
It's exactly as ridiculous and cheesy as it sounds in all of the best ways.
I was waiting for Pikmin to justify a Switch purchase, but February is perfect.
That way my girlfriend's present will be to get to watch me play Bayo1&2.
Not a fan of this download code trend. Either put the game on the card or don't bother with a physical release at all.
Personally I prefer to just get them digital. The problem is if they release a collector's edition or something I'm forced to go physical I'll be curious if that Infinite Climax version comes to the US. If not, I think I'm going full digital on Bayo 1 & 2 this time.
All the QTEs in the world aren't as bad as the inclusion of Loki
I don't find him to be all that bad. He ain't great when he's telling you to hurry up/slow down, but he didn't result in me replaying that fiery town stage like 7 times to get that QTE right.
As someone who played both back-to-back for the first time on the WiiU, I hated 1 with a burning fire, but 2 was my GOTY; you should definitely skip it.
1 has a higher skill ceiling but is rougher around the edges (and those QTE's can fuck off). B2 has less depth but is a smoother experience.
I like the setpieces from 1 better though. Bosses were more memorable.
Bayo 2 has mor weapon variety, I feel. A relatively high number of weapons in Bayo 1 use the same combo strings and finishers as Scarborough Fair (with obvious exceptions like Kulshedra and the katana whose name escapes me right now.). Bayo 2 has a larger number of weapons who do pretty much their own thing, with no weapon really giving you the same combo strings that Love is Blue does. There are also more weapons that are restricted to hands or feet. Whether that's good or bad is up to you, of course.
I like the equipment variety a great deal in Bayo 2 (I never was able to stick to one favorite loadout), but I do agree that there's less opportunity to do enormous combos in Bayo 2. Unless you're in Witch Time or Umbran Climax, a lot of enemies will straight-up block you mid-combo. OTOH, Bayo 2 doesn't sap your Magic every time you get hit, so doing Umbran Climax combines is actually a frequent event.
I'm not an expert player and never got into the really hard difficulties... but I much preferred Bayo 2. I know some people reckon the blocking thing is a deal-breaker, but I never got into the fighting system that much to have it bother me.
In 2, I like the colour scheme more, the enemy variety more, the weapons more, the locations more, the Lumen Sage duels more than the duels with Jeanne and even the haircut more.
There are a handful of climactic (hah!) moments in Bayo 1 that I think have no equal in Bayo 2.
I don't mind the enemy combo breakers that much, but I definitely didn't like the smaller variety of feet equipment and guns. The Bazookas in particular were a sad thing to lose, what with their unique moveset on hands, and the hilarity of having bazookas on your shoes. Yeah, there were gamebreaking DPS tricks with the bazookas on the feet, but I don't see that as a minus.
Bayo 2 is definitely a smoother-playing game. I felt like Bayo 1 went out of its way to put in Sega tributes to a much greater extent than Bayo 2 does with Nintendo ones, and that was a fun thing.
Bayo 1 is definitely the one with the much more ambitious and generally better plot. The final boss is Bayo 2 and the denouement are definitely way, way way less dramatic than that of Bayo 1.
Enemy art design and animation is definitely better in Bayo 2, and the more sepia-toned look of Bayo 1 wasn't bad at all, but Bayo 2 generally just looks way better.
I love them both!

I'm not sure I'd like Nintendo to install hardware in my brain. Even if it is to play Bayonetta.
Bayonetta 2 will have local wireless multiplayer included for Tag Climax
If you buy Bayo 2 it's $49.99 on the e-shop, which then gives you the ability to buy Bayo 1 for $9.99.
If you buy Bayo 1 standalone its $29.99, which then gives you the ability to buy Bayo 2 for $29.99
Amiibo support is included.

They did a similar thing when it was released on Wii U.
