Your party is my party exactly, @Henroid. Though after looking at @UncleSporky 's line-up and those chase/link shenanigans, I may replace my NS with a Dancer. It's just 9 levels... :P
It's funny, because I came here looking for hints and to discuss what to do with my Landshark. I really had no clue what to focus his skills towards. He's sitting on 5 unused points. Are there any recommendations on a particular element to dump points into for linking?

I've just left them all at one. I've been putting all their points into maxing vanguard, various passives, and stuff in their subclass (runemaster, for me).

Yeah, the only thing you gain from ranking them is damage. Link mastery already does shittons of damage, and you have things like Power Boost and such to boost damage for fewer points, Swordbreaker and its followup for defense, etc.
I'm happy that Venom Throw is so late in Nightseeker's tree. If it was earlier, it wouldn't do 700 damage per tick. With max rank, and arcanist sub... yeah, this has made me glad I stuck with Nightseeker, because it rivals the output of a link landsknecht for a couple turns when it hits. Then I can just switch to blind... reset resistances... and do it again.
finally got sub classing and now my n/l and d/s are on the link mastery pain train. the sniper is only for the passive buffs really, nothing else helps a dancer much since they can auto attack away.
there wasn't too much for my fortress or sniper to subclass to though. fortress went dancer because of fan dance and guard dance but fortresses already have that skill so whoops. sniper went nightstalker so I can... dual wield bows? I'll see at 40

I'm gonna try something different actually.
Dancer, Landshark, Nightseeker, Sniper, Medic.
Okay, not too different, I only changed out the Fortress. I'm gonna have my nightseeker dual-wield a sword and knife though, it seems like a good idea.
On B2? I've already made it to B2. Not finding where to go in there. Even looked around after killing all the FOEs (which respawn) for a path. Didn't find any.
Do you know where to kill the Red Bear for the quest? I assume you just keep walking that path.
To the dude who replaced shortcuts with doors... uh why? That's totally what the one way arrows are for. Unless there's some way to make them go both directions? But then there's two way arrows...
The Wardens are now gleefully wiping Kangaroos from the face of the Earth (face of the Etrian?). While getting through the fight with a live Nightseeker is still a bit of a challenge, those things are going down! And then the red BEAR.
Oh man, I'm totally loving this so far. I played 3 but never actually finished. Made it to the 5th stratum, then my underbalanced team really started to feel the pressure.
I'm rolling a Link-Landy, a Chase Dancer, and a Squall Shot Sniper for damage, along with a Fortress and Medic, of course.
Also, my guild card if anybody is interested:

Most shortcuts (especially in this game) go both ways, after you go through them once.
Some do not though, and they tell you this. I usually use the one way arrow and replace it with the two way arrow when it is opened, and obviously keep the one way arrow when it is one way only.
You may think you are saving time by using the two way arrow first but remember if you die without saving in non baby mode and save your map you'll have to reopen that shortcut again...something you may not remember to do if you've already marked it as such!

I have been screwed by that once or twice, but it's not too common a problem. Maybe just color in the tile? And I've only encountered one 1-way shortcut in EO4 so far. And them warning you is a new feature.
But this brings up a new topic. Anyone do anything special for mapping?
Warning you that it is one way is not a new feature. I think the wording was a lot less specific in the earlier games where this time it is very obvious.

There might have been a slight wording difference between one-ways and two-ways (though I don't think so) in EO3, the only other game I've played, but they never outright warned me.
Since I am just muddling through and have no idea what's optimal...
Landsknecht - subbed Bushi because everyone says that's what you should do. Except I do the whole chase thing so maybe not the best? But I got roar to remove buffs when necessary, and the ability to recover TP.
Not sure that sub Bushi is optimal for a link based build - Runemaster's Runic Guidance is tempting for the bonus damage when hitting weaknesses.
They even make weaknesses. A cool hobby to have. Runy is a good pick.
Bushi and Swordy are two of the classes with dualwield-synergy, though. And Rage -> Calm can mean never running out of TP. Optimal? Eh, more so-so. But there's stuff there.
Busty also offers passives for elements and weaknesses.
Okay so that first mini dungeon, the mine, is insanely misleading to the difficulty pacing. I went into the first actual dungeon and oh hello tree ra- OH GOD MY FACE.
Running with a Landshark, Fortress, Nightstalker (seeker?), Sniper, and Medic team. It seems like one of the safer combinations, minus the lack of status ailments from other party members for my Night folk to make use of.

I really appreciate the TP costs in the game now. My Nightseeker has been making some battles that are otherwise unpleasant a fucking breeze by blinding enemies in random encounters. 2TP.
This one is so different compared to the prior games. I mean, it's familiar, but it's so different. And refreshing.
Man, good luck without a Fortress, Henroid. I think you'll be able to survive, because I think they're less necessary than in previous games...still it just makes me nervous. I've heard that later on Dancer sub Fortress or vice versa can be pretty great. Hold onto your Medic because they're the only class that can revive, and definitely use Patch Up. And for your Sniper, well, this is what I did - I haven't put a single point into his main damage-dealing skill tree, and I don't regret it at all. Binds and crits and passives all the way with him. He won't come into his own for a little while but stick with it.
It's a shame that your first main 3DS game doesn't have incredibly awesome 3D usage. I bet they do some trickery to make monsters look good that would wreck the 3D possibly, or maybe in the dungeon the flat textured walls become way too obvious and it loses some depth. Either way it's not the best 3D example, even though it is very pretty.
On another note, I find stratum 4 really creepy. The music is like serial killer music, reminds me of some stuff from 9 Persons 9 Hours 9 Doors. And the type of area you're exploring also kind of sets me off, it's like...despair. I dunno, maybe I'm starting to recover from initial impressions because you get down to the grind but for a bit I had chills. Maybe I'm just weird and alone in this kind of thing. Don't spoil it for yourself anyway.
The whole decayed civilization/humanity thing, post-apocalyptic ruined libraries, and then you've got the situation getting worse with people turning into plants as well. My assumption is that the weird tree monsters I'm fighting used to be people, which makes it all worse.

I think I'll be able to pull it off. I'm gonna focus on my characters performing their strengths, not necessarily their side-purposes. The Nightseeker's status ailments are serving me well (even though it's really only blind right now). I'll tell you how it goes when I take on my first FOE.
By the way, Patch Up is fucking INCREDIBLE this time around. It heals for so much. Is it a flat amount, or is it a huge scaling amount?
And hey, the 3D thing is pretty cool in this game. I can't look at it for too long. At any rate I'm just glad to be able to play. I really owe Reynolds.

Patch Up is just a really good flat amount. I believe it is buffed by things that buff your healing because it's still carrying me pretty well in 4th stratum. You can get some information on this stuff with the skill simulator though it's not translated for the US release and may be inaccurate in some ways.
The game does have a decent depth to the 3D, but what I mean is it's not like you're really looking down a hallway, the monsters don't look like little miniatures you could pick up. Some games do an amazing job at that, like Mario 3D Land and Fire Emblem.
The 3D will be hard to deal with for a little while. I think this happens to everyone. You may even start seeing some web pages in "3D" as your eyes adjust. If you keep using 3D mode you will eventually get used to it and really enjoy it.
Does someone want to explain the Retire system? More explicitly the maximum return on it? Is there a minimum level where you'll reap all the rewards? If not, do multiple Retires stack for the skill points?
I'm finding myself pretty overleveled and I'd like to bring myself back down to where I'm not auto attacking every encounter that isn't an FOE or an actual boss. And since the Rest mechanic is less painful than ever I'll likely put in the work for the bonus strata (which'll make that a first for me since EO1, as I tend to avoid game threads for games I'm playing and thus can't ask these questions :P).

The minimum level to retire at is 30 and you get 1 extra skill point for every 10 levels your character was above that. So the maximum you could get from retiring is 8 skill points, if you retire at level 70. I don't think multiple retires "stack".

99 is the max retire bonus. Retire bonuses do not stack (only the last retire counts).
Retiring at 40s is +5 skill points, 70 is +8 skill points, and 99 is +10 skill points. For the others, fill in the blanks.

I didn't know there was a bonus for retiring at 99. Interesting that there's nothing at 80 or 90.
Not that I expect to ever retire anyone above level 70.

Took down my first FOE @UncleSporky! A nomad baboon.
Fight opened up well enough - blinded it quite easily, and my arm bind landed too so it wasn't able to attack anyway. Just a matter of whittling it down bit by bit. Then the arm bind wasn't reapplying when I needed it to, so each of my teammates on the front line took a hit that damn near killed each of them (well, except the Nightseeker, she didn't get hit). Still, no casualties by the end of it. It felt good! (Edit - Level 9 party, with access to burst skills)
I do have a question about the game mechanics though - do status ailments on enemies stack, as in they can have more than one? Specifically, I can blind enemies by skill use, but I have a weapon that can sometimes poison on hit. When the poison landed, the graphic effect of the blind went away and the blind status was gone the next turn. Was that just luck of the effect fading anyway, or do status ailments override each other?
Edit - And now to get some sleep since I only slept 5 hours, and 4 hours the night before >.<

You can't apply more than one status at a time, but you can apply more than one bind.
Also you should know that enemies actually get an increased resistance to a status/bind each time it is applied to them. So if you're fighting a boss or FOE that starts out easy and gets hard later, it might be a good idea not to "waste" your statuses early. This is also why it's a good idea for Nightseekers to put points into more than one kind of status.

Well, I'm glad Atlus found a way to keep all of us on our toes. That's legit.
But yeah I'm aware of being able to apply multiple kinds of binds. Status ailments I wasn't sure about, I never really used them back in the previous games much. And when I did, I would by chance just focus on one kind and not really notice.
Also the Arcanist which you unlock later on has the ability to reset enemies' resistances to status effects, and the Bushi has the ability to remove enemy buffs. Two important and unique class abilities there.
