I saw a red one and a yellow one. This seems familiar!
It's funny how Etrian Odyssey treats dragons with the appropriate amount of gravity / 'seriousness' as they should have when it comes to fantasy settings. Like when you see a dragon, fuck, it is on.
Meanwhile Warcraft has made dragons more commonplace than household pets.
I'm using NS/Land/Dancer and combining ns' dual weild, land's links and dancer's chases makes for some crazy damage output.
That's my current front line too. In past games, I've stuck with having the tank character present (Protector and Hoplite), but this time... I kinda wanna be that ass that shows people you don't need that. God I hope I can pull it off. <_<
I ran with a Gladiator as my 'tank' in EO3 without too many issues. I just exploited the fact that the AI favoured attacking the party member with the highest HP in the front row. Yeah it wasn't as efficient in soaking damage as a proper hoplite and I did sink a bunch of skill points and gearing into HP/Vit, but I found I had a lot more damage and a bit more tactical flexibility compared to dedicating an entire party member to tanking duties.
In EO4 so far, I'm finding my Fortress to be invaluable in soaking the kind of damage being thrown around. Those Tree Rats were a massive surprise after I came out of the tutorial cave feeling rather cocky because my party barely had to spend any TP to cruise through. Meanwhile in say EO1 those three gift Medicas were more than just a safety blanket (and it's a policy that I've carried through in the subsequent games. First thing you buy is 2-3 Medicas before anything else). Taunt -> Defend is great to cut down on incoming damage, but I'm finding Power Bash + a binding Sniper to be just as effective. I'm thinking I might keep the Fortress until I get all the classes unlocked then re-evaluate going to a heavy attacker as the 'tank' subclassing Fortress (I wonder if subbing Fortress to an Imperial would be viable) or Landshark for Power Bash + Sword Breaker. Or I could just take the Landshark and sub Arcanist for both bashes and breakers.
What I really need to do though is get off my butt and order the full game. Grinding the last two levels in the demo is boring when the only things that can kill you are the FoEs and normal exp gains are slow. Here I thought to myself 'Yay! Level locked! I can get a fully prepared party, experiment with builds and get a bunch of stashed money to ripout of the gate'...

Early WoW's world dragons felt very much like the ones in this game. You're out exploring and holy shit what is THAT.
Alright, now I'm stuck in the second area. No quests or missions. There's only one cave I can go into, and I can't go anywhere in it. What am I missing?

Yes you can. Assuming you just made your way into the seconds flying area,
The room where you can only move 10 steps at most, you have to run to doors within 10 steps. It's very doable. It's only that one room in that mini dungeon that has the limitation.
maybe something with limits but it would be so much easier with a hoplite and the anti elements since they turn every 5th turn into essentially a free turn for you
using something like a Y/H would pretty much be using a hoplite. but it's not like you gain anything but not using a hoplite because you can stick primal drums on them and that alone makes up for whatever loss of damage you get by not going all out WM

I love how Raging Boars bob their head to the music.
You guys are forgetting that the Prophecies exist from the Zodiacs.
Alternatively - get a Shogun/Buccaneer with maxed Limit Boost, equip 2 +Limit weapons (Either the Deathbringer gun or that one katana), and have him autoattacking during the fight. Guaranteed to have the Limit gauge topped up in 5 turns, so s/he can use the Limit that blocks elemental attacks.

People USE that prophecy crap? "Block an element attack with a retaliation of the element the enemy is resistant or immune to anyway."
Hoplite is, if not mandatory, highly advised for some of the post game bosses. This is of course a step down from the first two games where one is practically mandatory unless you over level or know the game back and front.
Protector is the best overall class in the first two games.
Interesting bit is that the elemental immunity-skills don't exist anymore, along with the infinidamage-bosses.
Forty/Swordy can be pretty good at parrying. Something I still need worked out is whether the Swordy's defensive dualwielding reduces damage better than a good shield. Simple percentage-reduction tends to be powerful.

Yeah, I was wondering about that too. And would that combo well with Nightseeker for dual skill activation?
I died on the fire salamander. So I retired my group and rebuilt.
Now I'm going with
NightSeeker/LandSknect + LandSknect/Fortress + Dancer/NightSeeker
RuneMaster/Medic + Sniper/Arcanist
Seems to be working a bet better but I still don't understand the value of Link attack. I have it close to maxed out and I never really see it go off. Freeze Link level 5 to get 45% Link Plus Max and Link mastery level 3. I have only see 1 extra attack and it was pretty week. It seems like maxing out Falcon Thrust would be far better.
I could go full bind mode and switch RuneMaster/Medic with Arcanist/Medic.....But Runemaster still does the most damage and not everyone can be status effected.
What level were people when they beat the Fire Salamander? I was at level 42 when I died against him and that seems a bit high.
I beat fire lizard at level 36 or something. my party happened to have lots of strong ice attacks
I figured I was way high as I was mopping the floor with everything else.....I just had nothing against his fire attack which murdered me alot. This time I have 3 points into RuneMaster fire res spell so I should be ready to go at level 41 after the reset.
My entire Party was at the same level of EXP so they all leveled up at once until last night. I ran into a sparkly flying Ice Blade dude on Map 3 with extra EXP food on + burst EXP......and just before he died he killed my entire party but my RuneMaster.....Whom gained 4 levels and is now 4 levels higher than everyone else....Going to have to bench him until the other 4 can catch up.
you guys were at lvl 36-42 for the boiling lizard. as in, 3rd strata final boss where you fight with the useless tauren chieftan guy?
i got wrecked by him twice then grinded a bit and was lvls 55-60 before killing him.
but I had no dedicated ice spells really. Bought fire charms for everyone, went with a lvl 62 medic and a fortress with guard mastery mastered. He was too resistant to ailments and binds so I had to bring my arcanist for atrophic eye and releasal spell, it seems basically impossible without casting atleast releasal spell on him. Once he can be routinely paralyzed my nightseeker could ice knife him twice per turn with Follow Trace hitting for ~800 each time and i only had 3 pts in ice knife i think. and my runemaster casting storm ruin for ~800 a shot.
he only had time to lay down one of the fire scale things
I stopped training the bushi because he just seems terrible. I guess I don't really understand how they work. he wasn't hitting for enough damage to warrant almost killing himself everytime he attacks.
also I dont know what to start subclassing as. I guess i'll start subclassing my medic now since the only thing I can put more pts into is TP boost and maxing out healing, line heal and party heal which seems unnecessary since the boosts from healing mastery and the other passive stuff is so large. what do you guys subclass your medics? as arcanists?
also my sniper should be subclassed now if i'm even going to keep him. he crits a lot and with chase bind he gets a lot of free hits i guess but he's just not that good really.
i also dont know what to start doing with my fortress i guess. I got all the defensive stuff I want from her. Ive never put any points into the bolt smash line of stuff and im not sure if i want to.
im not even thinking about subclassing my lvl 60 nightseeker cuz pretty much every skill is good and you need to get both the throws and knife attack lines to unlock Foul Mastery so yeah.
- buy fire resist charms and equip them on everyone to halve his damage
- buy Fire Mists (I think that's what they're called) and use them to reduce damage further
- work your way through his room, breaking scales and leaving so he doesn't catch you
- eventually break the big scale
- leave the room, go back to the pole and save so you don't have to do that again
- bring a couple ice scales with you into the fight and use them to break the scales he throws out sometimes
- use your guest's ice ability and any other ice attacks you have
- bind his head
I stomped on him pretty quickly. I don't know if he ever got a good hit on us, I bound him early on and status effect'd him.

Raid dragons had some pretty big gravitas too.
Yep! Just once, though. There's a parry ability after lv. 40 though.
And the chameleon lord is worse than baboon king. Just awful.
I guess I haven't found any light shields then because only my Landshark has been able to equip shields so far.
Yes you can. Assuming you just made your way into the seconds flying area,
killing the dragons without the element blocks

I was about to ask how the fuck he did the elemental dragons without antis!
Currently playing: GW2 and TSW
Spill the beans vagrant, did you subclass the Hoplite's element guards? :P

Good point. I never opted for them because of the point investment to get to them.
Zodiacs block elements too.

That is likely why I haven't noticed it going off very often. Does it work with my Sniper in the back row?

Getting them to attack first takes some work! AGI socketed boots! No Shield, Lighter Armor! A bunch of fat ass casters in the back row!

much easier alternative: N/L
has anyone been figuring out these boss drops? bear king drops the runemaster armor, but it takes something called a writhing wood that I don't have
- buy Fire Mists (I think that's what they're called) and use them to reduce damage further

- eventually break the big scale
