As for HDD space. Really, when are you EVER going to need more than 120 gig anyways. 120 is a lot.
Oh fuck you are so dumb. I've seen a lot of retarded Fox and the Vine arguments in my time, but you fucking take the retarded shitcake.
Multiply 120 by .93 and then subtract seven and you're down to 104GB already.
If you don't think that you could potentially fill one hundred gigs with games, demos, trailers, TV shows, and entire fucking multi-gig movies... well, I don't know what to say.
I suppose you'd be happy to pay $200 for a 120GB drive too, huh?
If you shop around, the gamer consumer would see that for $50 more than an Elite, they could have a PS3 with a 120GB hard drive (or more), that also functions as a high-def movie player.
I already use my 360 as a TV watching device via Media Center
True... but the way IPTV will make it happen is much more seamless. DVR right on the hard drive, better guide usage... no dedicated media center PC to make it happen.
Sure... and the big draw to IPTV is that most every program is 'on demand'. Honestly we don't know enough about the services that will be offered to understand how much the hard drive will be used... if at all.
The whole idea behind IPTV is that you are streaming content... so there's really no reason to use a DVR anymore.
What was i thinking...of course that's the case. Thanks for enlightening me, you just blew my mind!
Not entirely true; IPTV also has live content, which means you need a local drive to store your timeshifts.
NFL films will not let IPTV providers hold on demand copies of the football games without charging them $texas for the rights.
OK then...at the end of the day will this local drive be my 360?
Yes. Yes it will be.
There was some footage of a guy playing gears, and getting a live message popup (like an achievement) that said: "Now Recording: Heroes". It was being stored on his HDD.

Stop being so agressive.
No, I dont think I will ever fill a 120gb HDD.
Yes I know it is 104.
If I got to, say, 90gb filled then instead of buying another fucking HDD I would delete some stuff.
What I am saying is that I do not think I would fill a HDD with stuff that would all be permanent. Just like my PC HDD I delete stuff, old stuff, to make space.
God, I just hate people that expound their opinions in the most agressive manner possible. You have absolutely no basis to call me dumb. Maybe I should call you dumb for wasting your money on extra HDD space that you patently dont need.
I mean, sure, you might want to use the whole space to keep stuff rather than have to redownload or externally store items. But who gives a shit. 120gb or 200gb its all academic. As long as it is there in the first place then you have the ability to use one. Xbox was the first to have an internal HDD so stop with this bullshit about how the HDD is the most crucial item on the list to purchase. When it comes down to it, even if the PS3 was made of solid gold with a platinum nameplate it would still be an undesirable purchase because the games are not of a standard as the 360.
And when it comes down to it, I buy a games console to play games. Apparently it is the Sony culture to not do this and to get one for all the other functions. This is why Nintendo is kicking both 'our' asses in sales because the games are superior and consistently good.
I fucking hate console war arguments. Someone always has to get angry rather than talking it through. I am now because of the annoyance in your post has caused me.
To be fair, Carnivore, you do bring out the worst in people. If you thought through your arguments or provided any backing for why you think the way you do things would go a lot smoother.
For example, instead of saying "Really, when are you EVER going to need more than 120 gig anyways?" you could say "Really, when are you EVER going to need more than 120 gig anyways? You can always delete stuff you don't use. Most people with a DVR delete a show after watching it; wouldn't the same be true with this system? Seriously, who hangs on to every show or movie they record?"
At least then if somebody disagrees with you, they're not just disagreeing with "WHAT YOU THINK IS DUMB!"
I'm sorry if I hurt you, but I called you stupid because you made a very stupid comment. Asking why anyone would ever need a hundred gigs of space when movies and demos are clocking in at multiple gigs as it stands already is stupid.
Maybe you don't need it, but if you think the majority of people don't, then yeah, you're stupid. Sure, there will always be the guy who only downloads half a gig of Halo 2 maps and a few hundred megs of Live Arcade games, but most people are going to take advantage of the ridiculous amount of stuff downloadable on Live. To ask why anyone who owns a 360 would need more than 13GB of hard drive space is ridiculous.
Sure, maybe you would delete some stuff, but let's pretend for a minute you'd like to have all of your games and movies on one HDD, this way if you want to watch a movie you've paid for, it's there, you can watch it right now and you don't have to spend hours downloading it again.
But yeah, sowwy if I huwt youwr feewings.

To be fair, 13 gigs would have been enough were it not for MMOs and the Video Marketplace. Demos and game trailers generally have a shelf life, and whenever space gets low, the brief sping cleaning I do on the console never involves deleting something that I was in any way using.
That said, i will be getting the "1337" drive, as I am a whore for moar space.

Yeah, 13GB would have been plenty of space for save games and Live Arcade stuff as it stands now, but FFXI must be huge (it's ~9GB with PlayOnline on the PS2), and DLC will eventually be clocking in at hundreds of megs per game, I would think. Maps packs can get pretty huge.
And with a single eipsode of a TV show coming in at hundreds of megs, and full movies being several gigs... 13GB simply won't cut it.
Two or three movies and a demo would fill the normal 360 HD.
I can't tell if that's matte or not. I would rather have matte without chrome, to be honest. Glossy black is a mess, it's a fingerprint magnet (see: PSP and PS3). The chrome just makes it look like a bad spraypaint job.
Although a black finish might look better with some of the faceplates released.
I'm really curious as to what hardware changes might be made. I work for the company that supplies Microsoft with the NAND chips that store the dash on the 360.
You guys seem to have a much different take on some of this news then things I thought were already confirmed.
First, this is NOT the IPTV xbox, which will be available exclusively through your provider in much the same way you get your cable box. During the CES hubbub there were a few quotes from gates that the only way to get the IPTV would be to sign on with an authorized provider who would then give you one of the "Special machines"
but maybe I am really jacked up and don't understand this as well as I thought,
Secondly, this 480 price point is a limited time thing, once the initial run of black "elite" consoles sells through, they will be producing white 400$ premium consoles just like always, except they will have HDMI and a larger hard drive, a little extra value, and the same price. The 80$ premium is solely for the limited edition black version, so you can tell everyone how big your E-Penis is.
That said, I don't have a 360 (with the constant upgrade rumors, it made me to nervous to pull the trigger) and I will buy the black version the day it's released because it matched my entertainment center and I have been dying to get some HD gaming and I am sick of waiting.
I use a router. This would be a problem, wouldn't it?
Just run a cat-5 cable from the 360 to the router
Unless your router and your 360 are in separate rooms, on the opposite end of your house. If that is the case, then you either have to run 50 feet of CAT5 (which would probably cost you a shitload), or spend $100 on the 360 wireless adaptor.
Like maybe your router is in your bedroom where your computer lives, but your 360 is hooked up in your living room. Or, your router is in your living room, and your 360 is in your basement gaming den, or any number of other reasons why your 360 and your router would be out of reach.
Your only other option is to pay for a bridge, right? What do prices run on those? Every so often you'll see a LogiTech PlayLink on sale online (which would be awesome to pick up for cheap), but other than that, what kind of damage would a guy be looking at to pick up a quality wireless bridge to make a wireless connection on the 360 feasible? Even if it was $100, Once I pick up a 360 I'd still buy it over the MS one just out of spite.
I understand why some people need wireless, but since my computer is in the living room, so is my router. The only reason I got a wireless netgear router was because it was on sale and the same price as the wired router.
Also, its 6am and I haven't slept yet, so I'm sorry if I am a little argumentative.

It's cool. I work compressed night shifts (6:45 P.M. to 7:00 A.M.) so I know how it is when it's early, or late, or whatever and you haven't slept yet.
Running cable is a serious pain in the ass. One awesome tip I learned was to pipe the cable through the heating vents, this way you don't have to worry about stepping on it, or catching it in a door. It requires you go under your house, disassemble your ventage at any junctions, and get really fucking dirty, but it is worth it in the long run if you have the right kind of heating. And, unless you live in fucking Alaska, your vents will never get hot enough to fuck with the cable, or the signal... as long as you keep it short and sweet.
For the average gamer that needs wireless, a bridge is much cheaper, much more useful, and an all around much smarter buy than the overpriced MS USB one. I don't inderstand why anyone would buy it unless they simply didn't know any better, or really, really hated money.
Also, having a (secured) wireless setup is nice if you've got a PSP or a DS. Or a laptop.
Anyway, it sucks that the $480 Xbox 360 doesn't feature wireless internet out of the box, and it sucks even more that Microsoft thinks we as consumers are dumb enough to pay $100 extra for it.
But then again, a lot of us are dumb enough to spend $100 on a 20GB hard drive (and potentially $200 on a 120GB hard drive), so maybe they're on to something...
I am totally dumb enough to pay an 80$ premium just to make sure my electronics match. As for wireless, I was irritated by it's lack of inclusion. But as you were saying a decent multiport wireless bridge runs about sixty dollars. And since I am building an HTPC, I figure I can stick it behind the entertainment center and then plug in the PC and 360 into it. Two birds, one stone.
I use a router. This would be a problem, wouldn't it?

Pretty much. The special box he was referring to is the IPTV modem, not the 360.
The 360 you have right now (or the one you will get in the future) will be more than capable of doing IPTV; you just need a network capable IPTV modem to tap into it, and the appropriate dashboard update. HDMI will be nice if they start doing ICT/TIC style throttling, but that will be unlikely and unimportant for some time to come.
So yes, you need a provider (like Sprint or AT&T), and you need an IPTV modem... but you don't need a new 360.

Gracias sir, they made no mention of the word modem in the interviews, just vendor subsidized hardware. My bad on the assumption, thank you for the clarification.
So really there is no IPTV xbox, it's any xbox, with a firmware update?

Most likely
the demos they showed seemed to leverage the Media Center Extender software already in the 360 because my TV watching looks exactly like that right now
the IPTV box will most likely have some form of Media Center software... kinda like a mini headless Media Center HTPC
Right now when I watch TV I push "UP" on my channel changer and my 360 tells my Vista machine to change the channel and the result is what I see on the screen.

Well, the interface is Media Center-like, but I assure you, it's not an app separate from the dashboard/blade. It's an "always on" piece of software that can record stuff on the 360 while you play games or watch movies.

I can assure you that it will not involve extra hardware hooking up to the 360 itself.
It will be something that sits on your network, which uses the 360's hard drive for timeshifting.

I don't get this. Why do you want everyone to reject the 360 and get a Wii? Why the heck do you care if someone buys a 360 Elite over the Wii? It's not like the Wii's sales numbers are hurting, its clearly a success. Are you just being a "EVERYTHING NON-NINTENDO SUCKS" asshole or something?

The 360 you have right now (or the one you will get in the future) will be more than capable of doing IPTV; you just need a network capable IPTV modem to tap into it, and the appropriate dashboard update. HDMI will be nice if they start doing ICT/TIC style throttling, but that will be unlikely and unimportant for some time to come.
So yes, you need a provider (like Sprint or AT&T), and you need an IPTV modem... but you don't need a new 360.

So really there is no IPTV xbox, it's any xbox, with a firmware update?
the demos they showed seemed to leverage the Media Center Extender software already in the 360 because my TV watching looks exactly like that right now
the IPTV box will most likely have some form of Media Center software... kinda like a mini headless Media Center HTPC
Right now when I watch TV I push "UP" on my channel changer and my 360 tells my Vista machine to change the channel and the result is what I see on the screen.

it could be a device like the dev kit sidecar that attaches to the hard drive area that has it's own software
It will be something that sits on your network, which uses the 360's hard drive for timeshifting.

I know the comment was kinda old, but Newegg is really the best place to get network cables. 100ft for 8 dollars
Forsake, Warlock of Stonemaul
What's wrong with wanting the Wii to be a success? What's wrong with wanting more people to recognize what you enjoy and believe to be the best?
The Elite is overpriced and wishing that the Wii will look more favorable in comparison isn't insane. Hell, I think the Wii is overpriced.
