I already use my 360 as a TV watching device via Media Center
True... but the way IPTV will make it happen is much more seamless. DVR right on the hard drive, better guide usage... no dedicated media center PC to make it happen.
Sure... and the big draw to IPTV is that most every program is 'on demand'. Honestly we don't know enough about the services that will be offered to understand how much the hard drive will be used... if at all.
The whole idea behind IPTV is that you are streaming content... so there's really no reason to use a DVR anymore.
What was i thinking...of course that's the case. Thanks for enlightening me, you just blew my mind!
Not entirely true; IPTV also has live content, which means you need a local drive to store your timeshifts.
NFL films will not let IPTV providers hold on demand copies of the football games without charging them $texas for the rights.
OK then...at the end of the day will this local drive be my 360?
Yes. Yes it will be.
There was some footage of a guy playing gears, and getting a live message popup (like an achievement) that said: "Now Recording: Heroes". It was being stored on his HDD.
This will be delicious. Thank you sir, this quote chain can end now
Man, this shit is driving me nuts. I was just about to go out and pick up a 360 and now I have to wait for something that might not even exist. Microsoft, if you have this shit in the pipeline, just fucking come out and say it. You're dickin' around potential owners.

Terrorbyte... seriously? I thought you had it out for ol' Bill, and hated all Microsoftian stuff on principle.

Anywho, you will have your answer very soon one way or the other. In less than a month there either will or won't be an announcement on a May 6th "Elite"

Let's play Mario Kart or something...
I wanted to get one tonight, but I just can't bring myself to drop $400 with the potential of the Elite being real. Drats.
Oh, and I don't really hate Microsoft. I just prefer OS X to Windows and find it really unhealthy for the mainstream computer market (among others) to be dominated by a single, Borg-like company.
I picked up a Premium from CC two days ago. Figured it was worth it since it came with a second wireless controller for free. If I ever need more space, I can just buy the 120GB HDD that MS will surely release if they do make this elite model.

Well, do you see yourself spending 480 for the elite? Or wating until the holidays this year and getting the 400 dollar white version?
Since Microsoft charges $100 for a 20GB hard drive, I think the $80 difference justifies the extra 100GB of storage space. Especially when I want that motherfucker full of demos and shit.
I don't really want to wait as long as Nov/Dec. Heck, potentially waiting 'til May is already painful enough.

Yeah, it's from Circuit City.
It was a wonderful surprise from my wife. She led me to believe we were there to track down a CD of Patrick Stewart narrating Peter and the Wolf. Then, out of the blue, she hands me the free controller and says "Go pick out a game."

Awesome. I was planning on getting one on or around my birthday in June, but I wanted to wait for some kind of deal. My brother said that if there was a sale before then that he'd loan me the money. Now I think I have to make a thread and ask some questions.

100% Official: Xbox 360 Elite Moves from Fanboy Wet Dreams to Reality
Microsoft officially announced Xbox 360 Elite, a black version of its gaming console that has an HDMI port, a 120GB hard drive, as well as a black wireless Xbox 360 controller and a black Xbox live headset. Most of this, faithful readers, you already knew about as we chased the rumor all the way from start to finish. But isn't it nice to hear it straight from Redmond? Of course, not all rumors are right, or complete.
Jump past the gallery for the complete details.
Linked because Gizmodo has an assload of pictures.
It seems they risk confusing their market a tad with too many choices. That, and the fact that with a price very near to a standard PS3, the advantages of simply owning the 360 seem to dissolve slightly.
not a big fan of the announcement, but whatever. hopefully it replaces the 400 dollar system before november 22nd so i can cash in on my extended warranty.
Price. Until the elite becomes the $400 SKU, I feel this will be nothing but trouble. Also, the 120 gig HD being $180 is also far and above too much for what it should be.
Well, it's good to know this fucker exists. No built-in wireless is still a fucking pain, though. I was hoping that the rumors were wrong and they'd slip this shit in.
Major Nelson's podcast just confirmed that the new HD does indeed come with the transfer cable to transfer over your data. It wipes the drive after the move, evidentially. At least there is a way to move your data.

I find this annoying, but it has become the trend... multiple versions and worse, multiple releases for each system does not sit well with me.
However... I don't have a 360 yet, this is coming out 2 weeks after my birthday... I will be getting one.
But if I were an early adopter all that this release would do was make me never-ever buy at launch again. If this happens with the Wii (wouldn't surprise me) which I camped for, I would vow to never camp again, cause that shit would suck.

I would be terrified of buying this thing for at least six months. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the rumors were true, and the Elite eventually becomes the Premium. If I were you, I'd hang tight with my ear to the tracks.

$80 is worth my own knowledge that I will be able to get this version for sure rather than waiting and hoping.
... probably
edit - I didn't see that the OP had it stated that it would take over the premium spot. interesting.
Also, does it come with an HDMI cable/ is it a standard cable? if both of these are a "no" that would suck.
This really turned me off to MS. Now if I want HDMI on my 360 I have to fork over another $480? Fuck you.
Is HDMI really that important to anyone? Most normal consumers, and a rather large number of us, can barely discern 720p from 1080i via component.
Since I own the HD DVD drive, and being able to see and hear the difference HDMI offers, it's important to me. That and they will probably add TrueHD support now.
There's really no way they could've added HDMI to the console ... without creating another revision of the console. Seems like an absurd thing to be upset about.
"I have to get an SP to get a built-in backlight? FUCK YOU NINTENDO!"

See, "TrueHD" is the sort of phrase that has yet to hold any meaning for me.
I'm not defending anyone here, I just don't see this upgrade as immediately relevant to most people.
I wonder how many of these are going to be faulty at launch. I have seen the "3 rings of death" only once so far on my 360. My advice to anyone wanting one of these... I would wait until they get the production issues worked out. Then again. To anyone wanting one of these. I would just wait until microsoft comes out with their 4th sku (with the trend they are setting it is bound to happen.)
It is being packaged with the new chip right? The one that runs cooler or whatever? That's about the only thing that interests me. HDMI I could take or leave and while the bigger harddrive is enticing, I'd only use it for saves and arcade games, neither of which is taking up a big chunk of my harddrive now (I already have a DVR/On-Demand and an iPod/Stereo system, so why bother downloading it to my 360?)

For reasons I do not completely comprehend, my PC looks 10 times better off of VGA than DVI->HDMI on my HDTV.
Your TV probably scales signals from different inputs differently. HDMI signals are probably expanded to get the overscan right, whereas VGA signals are probably kept as one-to-one as possible.
So I was reading about this on Kotaku and saw this comment:
wrote:
"for people whose only concern is HDMI, this is a hard bargain for MS to press. i bought a 120G HD for my PS3 pre-launch and it cost <$100 in November '06, bringing my PS3 hardware costs to:
$500 20GB system
$100 bigger HD
$6 HDMI cable
$50 controller
TOTAL = $656
compare this to my current 360 which needs to be replaced:
$400 premium system
$200 hd dvd addon
$40 controller
$65 live vision kit (an extra $5 for the webcam + some xbla games makes it a better deal than a lone one-year live gold subscription)
$10 optical cable
TOTAL = $775
now i need to find someone to buy my 360, find a way to get the fucking data off the HD w/o buying a 120GB drive, and spend another $480 on the elite.
$775 previous 360 expense
($200) approximate used/trade-in value
$480 elite
TOTAL = $1055
fantastic. i'm really glad i'm going to end up spending about $400 more for an inferior HD format (smaller capacity, 54 Mbit/s v 36.5 Mbit/s)just because Universal and Weinstein refuse to be reasonable."
Quick, someone find me the penny arcade cartoon where the kid complains about how to play four swords he needs to also buy a TV, and a house, etc.

So, I read the official one finally. As I don't have a 360 yet, I'd probably pick this up if there aren't significant problems with it.
But I fell out laughing at this:

I still say pricing this at $400, moving the Premium to $300, then removing the Core SKU would have been the best move. I guess it could still happen though, maybe even later this year.
Who in their right mind would buy a new 360 Elite to replace their existing 360?
I can't tell the difference between Component and HDMI, and I certainly can't tell the difference between VGA and HDMI. You would have to have a pretty impressive TV and insanely good eyesight to notice the difference.
The extra space is nice, but it's really not a reason to replace your entire 360.
I suppose I'm just trying to justify my recent puchase of a 360Pro, but I can't see how anybody would pay a price premium for the Elite, when you can pick up great deals on the 360Pro (I got three extra free games and two free XBLA games with my 360 GoW pack).
