Anyone have a good way to display pins in general? Like, around the house that is. I know there are pin boxes out there.
I gutted a picture frame: took out the glass, bought a swath of black velvet, mounted the pins on that, then put it into the frame, reinserted the frame backing and Presto - ready to hang or put on the shelf.
My husband and I collect pins from all the big things we've done together - so we've got a LoL cosplay pin on there and a PokeCrawl pin mounted from last year.
I'm Ecstatic about the possibility of getting one of these for our 2013 memento
mostly im looking forward to pins that you get for free for going to some panel or event. idk for sure that they are going to do that but it was one of the ideas mike threw out there when he first started talking about this.
I don't know how I would feel about panels having pins (and I just can't see them giving quality pins out for free). You would have people going to panels only for pins and taking spots away from people trying to actually see the panel.
If anything, they could give them to tournament winners instead of medals. I like that idea.
As long as we can buy awesome stuff, they can do whatever they want. I am a sucker for blind boxes and event specific pins.
i dont think these pins are going to be so popular people are going to go to a panel just for them. specially if they dont announce which panels will have pins. i would assume the only panels that they would hand them out in are ones hosted by tycho and gabe.
Exactly. People go insane for stupid t-shirts and other pointless giveaways. This is way better than that.
But yea, I really have a hard time seeing them giving these out for free. Only way they do that is if you buy X amount and you get a pin packaged in, like they had during Xmas on the online store.
If Disney doesn't give these pins away for free, I highly doubt Penny Arcade would.
I don't expect them to release too many at PAX. Maybe a base set and a special PAX 2013 one. They have to see how well they sell before going nuts with them, although they already have my money for this whole thing. Heh.

I think that's a good theory. It would make sense to use PAX East as a test run for the pins. I would imagine they'll run between $3 and $12 depending on the size, rarity and material. I do hope they do special pins for groups of people, like tournaments, forumers etc. and panels and companies start catching on and selling/giving them away. This could really take off if it is executed correctly and advertised well.

I could see sets based on the regular group of PA characters and then blind box sets for Paint the Line, Automata, The Lookouts, etc. They could sell larger sized PAX 20XX pins, each year having a new design. What would be even more amazing is maybe getting game companies in on it somehow (or just being able to create a series with game characters).
I really think the pins are a good idea, but I agree with the other poster who brought up the possible problem with giving out pins at panels. For example, if I missed my chance to go to the ACAM panels because of pin hoarders, I would go ballistic!!!! I would much rather have them given out as cool prizes for any of the tournaments or at specific booths on the show floor. The idea of giving them is cool, but I did grow up in the era when paying to collect cards, pogs, mini-figures started (ugh, pogs, that brings back bad memories) first started. If you wanted pins for specific panels, you could sell them at the PAX merch booth. I would, however, do like they do with Hero Clix and other collectible items. Put them it sealed, blacked out packages, so you wont know exactly what you are getting.
Yea. I really see them only being available at the merch booths, not on the convention floor. And the sealed, blacked out packages are basically blind boxes that you can get at Disney (that I bought a shit ton of in September).
I really hope we have a Hotstepper Gabe pin. Him in a cowboy hat. Ha.
My guess is that there will be at least one in the swag bags. In order for people to trade, people have to actually have some to begin with, so there will probably be some PAX pin given out. Maybe a bonus one in the bag as well, since people aren't going to want to trade for the same pin. :P

Cork boards work perfectly. I'm planning on making a custom cork board myself to display all my gaming related pins. Craft stores carry different colors of cork and you can pick your own frame.
Khoo chimed in with a little extra info, but basically it's "more info in March".
I'm guessing (and wishing) there will be a special announcement at PAX East and the website will be up after that. I'm hoping I can get pins from the PA staff when I ask them for their autographs (especially Khoo!)

Has anybody else considered doing custom pin trading? Many companies can custom make enamel pins, similar to the buttoneers ordering their buttons. Obviously they cost more, and a time restriction makes it impossible to do at PAX East this year. But has anybody else thought about it?

Having ordered custom pins several times in the past, I do have some experience with this. I generally order 1000 pins at a time (I re-use them at many PAXes) which usually costs about $.35 per pin with tax and shipping. Because I order the same pin every time I no longer have to pay the mold fee ($50+), but that would be extra if its your first time. Because of that mold fee it gets a bit cost prohibitive to make small orders, but certainly doable.
Also I will have my pins with me all during PAX and would be happy to trade or just give you one, which is really my whole purpose in buying them.
-4 pins in the Core set
-3 pins have to be traded for (1 from Mike, 1 from Jerry, and 1 from either of them/an Enforcer/PA Staff)
-1 pin is a Merch booth reward (Merch pin that was given after $90 spending during Xmas)
-4 pins are at the merch booth (as well as I assume the Core Set)
-1 pin is at the Wizards of the Coast booth
Buy the Core Set, buy the other 4 merch booth pins (and earn the Merch pin as well). So, you leave PAX with at least 9 pins and have to hope to run into Mike/Jerry/PA Staff/appropriate Enforcer for the other 3). I assume you have to trade or purchase or win a raffle/drawing (shudder) for the WotC pin.
I can't wait for PAX. I picked up the core set online. I'm not sure if it will get here on time but if it does cool cool cool but I'm sure I'll buy another one and all the extra pins. I love pin trading!!!
Well damn, I think I'm about to start a new hobby. I will sell a finger and/or toe for Automata pins.

I am just curious as to how that will work (the trading with Mike and Jerry). Are they going to just have lanyards stuffed with the exclusive pins to get them out to as many people as possible?

For real, those guys are going to need dedicated pin jockeys to handle all the swapping. I'm going to gamble that there will be plenty of starter sets for sale at the merch booth, and that the PA store won't sell all the stock online before PAX. I worry they might sell out, but I'd rather buy at the show and not pay shipping.
I was going to buy the starter set until I realized you can buy them at PAX, and I decided not to risk a late shipment date. I'll probably end up picking up 2 sets at PAX anyways. So awesome, I've been looking forward to this since it was announced.

Well, generally with this kind of pin trading, a pin is only "valuable" if it's "official". Official traders don't trade for non-official pins, which makes custom pins worth a lot less for people trying to complete a set. I strongly suggest just doing Buttoneering if you want to do custom pin trading, and using a custom pin as your "button" if you wish (as people have done in the past).

And three pins for one exclusive pin from Tycho, Gabe and PA Staff/Enforcer? That seems a bit steep yo....might as well buy two core sets so I don't have to give up Flesh Reaper and Fruit Fucker. Tycho can be sacrificed for the greater good.
Do you think they'll just repackage all the starter Tychos and Gabes that we trade for the exclusives?

Arithon32Member of the PinquisitionRegistered Userregular
They might as well. I know I'll be buying an extra starter pack just to trade for the exclusives. Hell, if they want I won't even crack the package, just hand me the three exclusives and here's your starter pack back
Well ya gotta think about the rarity of pins as well. CTS Gabe and Zombie Tycho will be rare due to Mike and Jerry rarely being seen on the show floor or the halls. They are busy men and I'd imagine when they are doing an autograph session a lot of people would line up just for their pins.
Would it be cool if they have exclusive pins in say like 5 years and the only way to get em is to trade all the previous Gabe or Tycho Pins? That'd be nuts if they kept a chart like that...
ie: Exclusive Gabe Pinny Arcade 5 year anniversary. Requirements: All previous Gabe pins.
EDIT:Hoping that the other four mystery pins are the same price as the core. I already see myself spending $90 in pins alone....god help me...
EDITEDIT Cause I love talking about these pins...: I don't like Magic the Gathering, but the design on the Wizards of the Coast pin looks really neat...Same goes for the cat mystery pin if he has something Pax East related around his collar. Looks like a scarf...
@Riokenn I've run into Mike and Jerry numerous times just walking around the convention. When they aren't on stage they're having fun like the rest of us. Now, Khoo on the other hand always looks half crazed/assassin serious when you see him on the floor.
So aside from the Merch (I'm going to guess $75 to unlock Merch at the Merch Booth), how much should I expect to spend if I want to get all of the pins? $60 for both sets, plus another $30 for a set that I can trade?

I was happy to catch Jerry last year at East to give him some of the space invaders candy for the brigade. They're definitely out and about I've seen them quite often around the convention center and places nearby. Got to meet Khoo last year as well.
I know Mike and Jerry are easier to track down then Khoo, but they're definitely out and about more then not.
At Prime last year Khoo was just sitting in the Swagbag line talking to people.

I've run into Khoo at nearly every PAX I've attended, but outside of panels and the meet & greet, only saw Mike once and have yet to run into Jerry.

Agreed! So what kinds of pins is everyone looking for? Any specific characters/subjects you hope to see?
I wonder if they will release pins that have either a whole strip on them or maybe a panel. Those would be pretty cool.
edit: When I think of a panel/strip pin, I envision the pin type to be this...
