Pretentious: Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.
FTL is the only indie game there at the top and this surely does not fit.
But since you "game" I assume you mean TWD.
There is an argument to be made that the choices lack the level of effect on the world as they should ideally have had. The Walking Dead does not deserve being called "game" inside quotation marks though by the definition of the word. It has numerous skill based segments and interactive choices that do affect what occurs. It is by definition a game. It also has a fantastic narrative and story, and some of the best characters ever written for a video game. Which is probably what made most people make it their GOTY choice.
The lesson here is that we need to stop giving our money to these snobby indie "game" devs and instead buy real games made by real companies!
After all if we don't give all our budgets to Activision maybe at some point there will be no Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 4: Codblops 3. And who will make innovative games then I wonder.
Diablo 3 above Far Cry 3 and motherfucking Xenoblade Chronicles?
The hell.
I imagine a lot of people just went ahead and played Xenoblade in 2011.
True, but you couldn't vote for it last year.
Shame to see Xenoblade only at rank 14. It really deserves all the attention it can get. In my opinion, it is the best JRPG of all time, or at least among the very best (I'd rank it up there with Final Fantasy 6 and Persona 4).
If you own a Wii - buy it.
If you own a WiiU - buy it.
If you have even the slightest interest in JPRGs or even if you feel like the genre has been declining in quality lately - give it a shot. Wiis should be dirt cheap by now, so it won't even be that expensive.
Xenoblade does all the things right that Final Fantasy and many other supposedly "big" JRPGs have been doing wrong lately.
Plus, absolutely outstanding voice acting performances in both languages - really big names in voice acting who do an exquisite job in Japanese (Cell! Vegeta!) and truly charming British voice actors for those who prefer English, so no fucking Yuri Lowenthal, Johnny Yong Bosch or the other usual suspects.
TWD didn't grip me, the events in the first two episodes were too artificial and obvious and none of the choices ever let you do the smart thing. I think it would have made for compelling viewing though, in the traditional shouting at the television sort of thing. It just didn't work for me when I'm the one being made to make patently stupid choices.
XCOM, Mass Effect and FTL were great and deserve their spots, even if ME3 was disappointing in parts (and not just for the ending). I'd have had Mark of the Ninja a lot higher, Diablo 3 a little higher and Borderlands 2 a little lower (I played Maya, so fuck that game). Guild Wars 2 lost me with all the Trahearne stuff and the awful last few zones, the rest of the list I've not got much interest in.

Sometime today, when I'm not busy with "work" I will get around to running my usual average ranking re-ranking average list based on the numbers. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, see last year's results thread.
Boo on everyone who let Spec Ops and FarCry 3 slip so low... for shame. TWD is very deserving of the GOTY crown, and excellent and engaging experience all the way to the end. There was a certain part in EP4? Maybe 3? I dunno, the part that's the reason everyone says "fuck Lily". That was one of the biggest gut punching shocks in a game, ever. I was crushed for days...
Also glad to see ME3 didn't take a big hit because of the silly ending buisness. ME3 deserved a top ten spot. I was one of the weirdos who was ok with the original endings. Finally decided to download the extended cut when Leviathan (which in itself was fucking awesome) came out, and wow... they were even better. I played through again and went with the green (read: best) ending. By the end, I was crying. Not even ashamed to admit it... it was that good and impactful. Impactful to me anyways, because like TWD, These were characters I was invested in. Moreso with ME3 since I'd been crafting their stories since 2007.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
I guess I just have higher standards for Game of the Year than a repetitive six-hour game that tries to be a fancy, dramatic story, not to mention the expectation of being able to buy the game at a store and actually play it.
But when it comes to indie darlings like TWD, apparently whether or not a game works isn't part of the lower-standards scale.
The sour grapes in these threads are always the best. Especially anime avatar dudes telling the rest of us our games are terrible

Yeah, gotta agree with you there. I thought the original ending was fine and the extended cut fixed all the problems I had with it (haven't played Leviathan yet) and all in all, ME3 was an absolutely outstanding game.
You're wrong about green being the best ending, however. Red 4 lyfe

Because when you have no real counterarguments towards a stance, immature attacks on the other side is the next best thing.
Actually, I haven't seen extended cut Red yet. And I haven't bought Omega... hmmm. Might have to start a new Shep. That would mean having to start a completely new ME1 game...
Awwwww Yissssssss

Moving on...
I think the reason Far Cry 3 didn't finish in the top 10 is that by the time it came out, everybody had their plates full with games from October and November. And speaking only for myself, I honestly wasn't expecting it to turn out as well as it did. Maybe there were others like me who just hadn't set aside any time for the game and are yet to get around to playing it.

Your stance is laughable at best. Calling any video game pretentious is ridiculous. You don't really understand what the word means and you're lashing out against "indie games" because your game didn't win. There's nothing to your argument except to enjoy the sour grapes.

Red is clearly the best because a certain character survives there ;-)
But yeah, this really isn't the thread for this discussion.
Generally, games that are released in November or December are definitely at a disadvantage. If had more time and/or money, Paper Mario and Prof. Layton definitely would've made it on my list..and if I had access to my desktop PC, I probably would've played Sleeping Dogs or Crusader Kings 2 too. Oh well.
I would've been interested to see a "games actually from 2011 or 2010 that you played in 2012" vote.
I am mildly disappointed that my pretentious non-indie darling of 2012, Spec-Ops: The Line, didn't make it into the top 10, but then again, it now retains it's snobbish intellectual "not for the unwashed Journey and FTL playing masses" appeal.
Also, perhaps I underestimated the number of PS3 consoles out in the wild, since I didn't expect any PS3 exclusive to make the top 10.
Also, fuck yes The Walking Dead and Sleeping Dogs.

Uh... that's a girl actually . It's Lightning. She was, like, everywhere.
I am also mad TWD won because I didn't play it. How dare all of you. AMY was clearly the game of the year I can't believe all of you are unable to realize that oh my god and also some italics.

Well then, I'm sorry for exposing you to the belief that a game you like is overrated and is simply highly-praised because it is held to different standards for gameplay and substance than major releases. I shall allow you to continue believing that no one feels that a six-hour game where its only merit is story pales in comparisons to full games that provide excellent stories and more.
How gracious of you! Long live LilyWhite, glorious and most kind Emperor of the Internet!
Also, a game is a game, regardless of length. TWD if a "full" game, as you like to put it.

Of course the list AC3 would be on is "Top Ten Disappointments of the Decade", and this decade aint even over yet :P
