Some of the talk about "but The Walking Dead isn't much of a game" reminds me of stuff like this tweet and this twitter account and this reddit post and this Giant Bomb thread and all sorts of other stuff that I wish I had saved the link to when I read it. Suffice to say that a lot of ink is being spilled over whether some things are games but it's not clear to my why anyone would ever give a flying fuck whether something is or isn't a game. For all I care, GOTY could stand for Gwooble of the Year Award and if everyone knows what a gwooble is and it turns out people think The Walking Dead is the best gwooble then I don't know why it would matter that the best gwooble has bad "gameplay" or isn't a "game" because it turns out I don't enjoy games, I enjoy gwoobles.

    Now that's a game!

Someone mentioned participation being down overall, and I just want to say that since I started using the bookmark system, I no longer see as many interesting posts since I just load my bookmarks page. That's my own dumb fault, but it might be that case overall, too?

Except it's not Gwooble of the Year, it's Game of the Year. I know it's all post modern and hip now to be like "Hey man, games are what we make them", but some people actually give a shit how a game plays, and their opinion is no less valid than people who would be just as happy with a visual novel that you just pressed A to breeze through.

I give the fact that the first two pages were silly and dumb with all this "it's not a game" nonsense (it's a game), but this sort of counter reaction of "Man, it's not COOL to care about game play" is equally goosey.

Yeah, but that's the thing. Sure, your opinion matters, because (I assume) you voted. But so did 470 other people. And 70 people thought it was a good enough game to be considered the best game of the year. So whether or not you think it was a good enough game gameplay-wise, PA Forum consensus says that it was the best game of the year.

But what do I know? AC3 was my GOTY.

I think "kinda interactive digital experience" is really emerging as it's own genre. I think any kind of video game awards should start a separate category just for it, kinda like when a lot of game awards had "Best Extreme/Individual Sports Game" when they didn't want to have to compare Tony Hawk and Madden.

But who's saying that? Again, nobody is advocating one over the other. Just that in this particular case, some people managed to overlook the gameplay shortcomings because the story more than made up for it. Others couldn't overlook the poor game play. As this poll shows, the people in the former category outweighed those in the latter. That's it! Your team didn't lose! Nobody said your opinion is invalid or that you're wrong. You aren't being persecuted here.

I don't think anyone is arguing that it shouldn't be GoTY by the poll. Obviously it should be, it was voted there.

This whole thing is kind of silly. We had one person post something stupid and rude, and now the whole thread is this zeitgeist back and forth over basically nothing.

Maybe next year we should lock the poll results thread, and open a second thread specifically for poll discussion. That way people who seem to get all in a twist about people respectfully sharing their opinion can just avoid it. I still feel like this thread was derailed from reasonable conversation by those first two pages. It set this abrasive tone, and here we are.

So, what are the gameplay shortcomings of TWD? The aiming during the shooting sections was a bit wonky, sure, but other than that the game played just the way it intended. When I hold the stick to left, my character walks to left. When I hit a button to inspect or use something, my character inspects or uses something.

I'm not going to shit up poor mcc's awesome thread anymore. I posted three pages ago why I wasn't personally fond of TWD's game play.

I stick by my suggestion of having a separate "Results Discussion" thread next year.

What purpose does a separate discussion thread serve when this discussion thread is equally useful for discussing things related to this thread?

Because I feel bad that mcc's thread got kind of shit up with those first two pages of filth, and then kind of just rolled from there.

I want to be clear about something: I didn't mean to come off as picking on you. Really, while you disagree about TWD's pedigree of gameplay, you still agree that it is a "game." You've been pretty reasonable, even if others disagree. I think a lot of the argument was more directed at lilyWhite.

    In other words, "opinions lol."

It's a real shame that people tend to dismiss anything that doesn't involve killing things or levelling up as not being gameplay. Choosing whether or not I agree with Kenny had a far greater effect on my experience with the game than, say, deciding whether to learn the fire spell or the ice spell in Torchlight 2 did, yet the latter is automatically considered more meaningful because of an arbitrary distinction.

Because a game should not be judged based on what's actually in it, but what ignorant whiners dumb it down to simply so they can obsessively slander a game based on their dumbed-down, disconnected-from-reality version of it.

I imagine it would make your head explode if I mentioned what game won Escapist's GotY poll?

Would it blow your mind to know what game came in 2nd on Escapist's GotY poll? Enough to edit another one of your comments again?

Not to mention, ME3 came in 3rd in mcc's poll, so I don't see the reason for the vitriol.

Yeah, but without it, nobody would be able to come to the defense of an obscure game that nobody ever heard about and give it the recognition it so richly deserves. Repeatedly. Long after the point is made. Because one of these days the Post Reply button will actually work as intended and change an internet stranger's mind.

If I choose Destroy, the Normandy crew comes out with green lines?

Really, it just sickens me that some people are so obsessed with slandering a game with delusional lies. And I'm not going to call them anything but delusional lies, because there is nothing in reality that supports the lies, nothing that provides any basis to believe the lies.

Hey gaiz you know what's better than whining and/or complaining about how such-and-such game doesn't deserve to be on this tier and that-other-thing is totes better, or that some other poll said differently so everything is suspect?

    Not doing that, I think!

It's just an informal slice of what what a segment of the PA (and a couple of other) forum communities think. Agree, disagree, who cares, it's fun and interesting, and that's all that matters.

Besides, ya'll a bunch of goddamn haters anyway since Frog Fractions didn't take #1. So everything else is moot.

And @LilyWhite, maybe you shouldn't just go ahead and obliquely spoil the endings outside of a tag?

Unless someone just watches the youtube video I linked to, which adequately and easily makes all the argument I need it to make trivially.
I don't see why I should judge a game based on a video rather than the game itself. I've seen the pre-EC endings myself, and based on that, I can safely say that I have absolutely no clue as to how anyone can think or believe that they can make others think that the only difference is the colour.

Yeah, 2012 was a bad year for me. :/

I'm sure Walking Dead was a great game for you if you enjoy adventure games, but I'm one of the folks that hasn't been missing that genre at all, and the game did nothing for me. XCOM was fun in it's own way, and none of it's bugs are dealbreakers, but it lost it's charm for me after the first playthrough. Almost everything I loved about XCOM had been stripped out of the 2012 version, and I just stopped playing it after encountering some total bullshit on missions (I'm sorry, but the die roller does not give you accurate odds. Missing multiple 100% accurate shots in a row feels cheap/unfair, and not in a Dwarf Fortress 'FUN!' way). FTL was/is legitimately great, and I fire it up all of the time, but it's not something I feel like I can really sink my teeth into.

I boycotted the Mass Effect series, so I missed that boat.

Here's my goddamn list since I didn't get my vote in, fuck

    1. Borderlands 2
    2. Mass Effect 3
    3. Diablo III
    4. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
    5. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
    6. Halo 4
    7. Darksiders II
    8. Prototype 2
    9. Torchlight II
    10. Guild Wars 2
    11. Armored Core V
    12. Spec Ops: The Line
    13. FTL
    14. Frog Fractions
    15. Fallen Enchantress
    16. Dear Esther

Games I haven't had a chance to play yet but would probably get added in there if I had played them in time:
    Assassin's Creed III
    Journey
    Dishonored
    Far Cry 3

I think my list would be:

    1. Civ V: Gods & Kings
    2. FTL
    3. Latest release of Lazy Newb for Dwarf Fortress
    4. ?????

In terms of stuff I found myself going back to over and over from 2012. League of Legends has honestly absorbed most of my gaming time, and a whole bunch usually gets sunk into Homeworld 2 & Sacrifice intermittently.

Hopefully 2013 will see some new games that let me build big things that can stomp on ppl. :D
