H/A,
I had to move my crappy IKEA desk yesterday to rescue a stick of deodorant that had fallen into THE WALL ZONE, and when I moved it back, it was all wobbly. This will not do.
I'm at a point in my life where I feel like I can afford to spend a reasonable amount of money on a piece of furniture that gets the 2nd most use out of me after my bed. I love a good value, but I'm willing to entertain suggestions in the $70-$300 price range. I'm looking for something sturdy, made out of either real wood or some sort of higher-quality plastic/metal (??), and with plenty of room underneath (I don't have much use for desk drawers). I prefer darker colors to lighter ones.
Anyone got recommendations?
EDIT: I need to be able to either assemble the desk in my room, or be able to get it up a flight of stairs that turns 360 degrees in the first five steps. For reference, I was able to get my queen-sized mattress up the stairs under much duress and bending, but there was no hope for my box spring.
EDIT EDIT: NO KEYBOARD TRAYS. Gotta have the monitor, keyboard, and mouse on the same surface.

(Or something that looks a lot like it, at least, I bought mine 4-5 years ago so there might have been some changes).
It hasn't given me any stability problems, and there are no shelves/trays/etc to get in the way (I hate those). Just a slab of wood and some metal supports.
I had one of their square'ish corner desks (a "Series A" by the looks of it, though mine was in slate/grey) and according to the site those are around $180-225 (not sure what S&H you might face though). 48" on a side (minus the one corner cut out) easily fit 2 monitors, my keyboard, mouse, and had lots of space leftover for whatever I wanted to have there (random papers, food, miniatures for assembly/painting, etc).
Anyways there was the most awesome desk I've ever seen which was build using some kind of modular system (from a company called 80/20) and it was glorious. I think the former posting it was Stormwatcher, but cannot be sure (dammit, definitely Storm<something>).
Alternatively I saw a loverly desk here made out of an old solid wood door and using conduit (1" I think, you can get if from Home Depot or Lowes). That's what I'd probably do (cause I'm a cheap bastard when it comes to buying stuff for myself) and I might put a sheet of glass on top to deal with the surface pattern on the door. As it stands my new desk will be a family heirloom piano which is perfect for standing height desk (and we have no good goddamn business housing it given how small our house is and no one plays the piano).
*Edit: In Moe's, not H/A.

And loving it. Every other desk I found was either really poorly made of compressed fiberboard or way too old fashioned.

Just use a reglar office store white folding table.
- It's sturdier (and cheaper) than what you'll buy at ikea.
- No assembly required.
- No real disassembly required. Just clear it off and fold the legs.
Desks are a fucking scam.
If you need drawers:
Sterilite / rubbermade wheely cabinets. They'll fit under the desk, are easily moved, and if you ever change apartments / homes you can just duct tape the storage compartments in place, and toss them in the truck.
Desks are a fucking scam.
The Desk Industrial Complex, or DICs, are holding back America.
Alternatively, my wife and I got our desks at World Market and have been pretty damn pleased with them.

This is the brand I have. I haven't had a problem with solidity / stuff shifting around.
If you have an uneven floor, use a shim or two to even it out.
My overall point is: Don't think of it as a need for a "desk". Think of it as a need for "a flat surface, elevated above the ground, upon which computers and computer accessories can be placed." In that case, a good folding table works fine, isn't a pain to assemble / disassemble, and costs much less than a desk-desk.
