So there's this thing called
Defiance launching in April this year. It's a joint project between
Trion Worlds, who have a handful of really solid MMOs like
RIFT under their belt, and
Syfy, who make shows of various qualities and have a silly name.
So why are a game studio and a TV studio collaborating? Exactly the reason you would hope:
Defiance™ is the first multi-platform shooter MMO, that in a ground-breaking entertainment experience, interconnects with a global television program on Syfy. The game combines the intense action of a console third-person shooter, with the persistence, scale, and customization of an MMO, while its TV counterpart exudes the scope, story, and drama of a classic sci-fi epic.
"Well that's kinda neat," you say, "but it would be really cool if player-driven events from the game impacted on the storyline of the TV show."
...the Defiance TV series is a revolutionary weekly drama that impacts the game, and gives you the chance to change the show.
Oh shits!
I'm not usually much of one for shooters, but I'm pretty excited for this. Here's a couple of trailers:
The TV show:

The Game:

And there's plenty more to see on the main site and the
Defiance Universe YouTube Channel.
Also if you make a Trion account and go to the "My Ego" section of the game site, there's a code-hunting metagame you can play for some extra character perks come launch day. But don't feel like you have to hunt for the codes yourself, on the official forums there's a bunch of people with
rapidly disintegrating psyches who have done much of the legwork for you. Just use their list.

If anyone else happens to play the PC beta, and you have some sort of controller you can plug in, I suggest you do so. You can remap keys so it's less awkward (really, my only issue with the defaults is the placement of the key for your chosen power) and the shooting is slightly better with a mouse, but the vehicle controls are butts with a keyboard and mouse. With a controller there's a slight aim assist (pointing vaguely at something and then using the aim/iron sights button will move the reticule to center mass, though it doesn't lock-on and enemies will move) so I didn't miss mouse aiming terribly much when I switched over to a controller.
Other than that it seems like it could be good fun.
Other than the fact that it comes out in april and that doesn't leave a ton of room for more polish.
That and the idea is just novel enough I might be able to put up with a mediocre game just for the TV show if it's good enough.
