Arguably had star representation last time with its own stage. I think Sakurai said he didn't think any of the characters were fighters.
Oh, that reminds me. If any of you want to experience the bizarre glory that was the Sakurai-written Brawl site, I'd suggest you go to it NOW. The content might be gone forever after the announcement.
Since nintendo seems to be getting friendly with the SMT guys, it would be cool to see an SMT character in this. All summonin demons for attacks and whatnot.

I like this approach. If you don't have characters that could fight (Animal Crossing really, really doesn't), you get a stage!
Also, regarding people who think Zoroark will replace Lucario: I won't say no, but do note that Lucario is significantly more popular than Zoroark in Japan and America.

It really is too bad Nocturne wasn't on a Nintendo console, I would love to wreck fools as the demi-fiend. He would probably be OP though.
Ness might still be in, which is why I said Mother 3 and not Mother.
But I'd be stunned if Jigglypuff was still in.
Maybe they want to greatly expand the moveset for characters and thus cut the roster down to something more balanced? It's not an impossible scenario.
Why would they want to greatly expand the moveset? There's no reason to do that, everybody loves the controls the way they are. Removing fan favorite characters in favor of completely reworking the gameplay would be a horrible decision in every way.

No, removing the tripping chance would be AWESOME.
Hm, what characters would be in danger of removal?
Obviously not the original 12.
Metaknight and Dedede are probably safe, since Sakurai has a soft spot for Kirby and the two keep appearing in Kirby stuff. Captain Olimar's got a new game coming (unless he gets swapped out for the similar new Pikmin 3 protagonists). So does Wario. Diddy and Pit have been in games recently. Game & Watch and Rob are very likely safe since Smash games tend to be Nintendo celebrations as it is, plus Sakurai loves crazy crap. Ice Climbers was strongly featured in both the 3DS and Wii U Virtual Console, plus they have a unique play style. Same for Zelda. Peach and Ganondorf are probably safe unless there's a drastic character cutback.
Snake and Sonic? Kojima seems to revel in getting Snake into every game series he can plus Metal Gear Solid 4 on the PS3 wasn't an impediment, so unless some higher-up at Konami throws a mystery fit he's probably fine. And Nintendo is getting three Wii U exclusive Sonic games along with yet another Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, so Sonic not appearing would be a baffling snub.
That leaves a few characters from games with multiple characters already. I couldn't begin to guess what Fire Emblem characters will make it. There hasn't been any Mother stuff at all lately so I wouldn't count on both Ness and Lucas, then again I was shocked when Ness made it into Brawl. Toon Link is a fun spin on the original, but might get cut if there's a character cutback since he's more or less Link with a different character model. Even moreso with Wolf. Since Mewtwo was shifted out for Lucario, the same might happen to Lucario. I get the feeling Pokemon Trainer will stay... his Pokemon are nearly as iconic as Pikachu, plus the character idea is neat.
Haha, way too soon to rule him out. Hell, I think a Mega Man tag on the end of the teaser would pretty much be the only way to replicate the "holy shit, Snake?!?" reveal from Brawl now that Sony Smash Bros. ruined guest characters for everyone.
I wonder what incarnation they'll base Link and Zelda off of. New smash is coming out sort of between Zeldas and it'll be weird if they end up based on Skyward Sword if the new Zelda has a different style and new Zelda might not have been far enough along to influence Smash. I really want Skyward Sword Zelda and a Sheik inspired by that style though!
I'm expecting Toon Link to stay because Wind Waker HD is coming this fall so he'll still be relevant.

Normally I'd be right there with you, but with Wind Waker HD coming to the WiiU I'd wager that Toon Link will not only keep his spot, he'll be fleshed out to differentiate him more from whatever other Link they go with.
I expect to see changes to Final Smashes. Tripping will go. I expect at least one major controversial change to the basic gameplay. Surprise retro character? Lolo.
As mentioned, I'm all over Little Mac and think there's a pretty good shot at seeing him on the roster.
My long shot hopes? Isa + Kachi from Sin & Punishment: Star Successor and Vanessa Z. Schneider from P.N.03 (though I'd settle for an assist or even a mention on the latter at this point). I like the idea behind the Ice Climbers and think the S&N tag team could expand on that.

True enough.
Plus since Sakurai is the type of guy to cram 50+ hours into Kid Icarus fer chrissake, I'd be shocked if the total character roster doesn't crest Brawl's.

Off topic: what's the general consensus on Star Successor? It's like $12 these days but my backlog is miles long.
I think the only mention P.N.03 gets these days is very subtle nods from Capcom. Like one of Spencer's colors in UMvC3.
Be kinda weird to see him jumping around considering he has a limp.
Flint would be cool, but he doesn't have a lot of variety.
Sad to say I'm not expecting any playable Mother 3 characters this time, not even Lucas.
I dunno, that limp doesn't seem to impede him in the slightest. Porkey could use his spider-mech (It'd have to be made smaller) thing plus some kamekazi Porkey-bots.
Edit: You know, Simon Belmont might be cool. Castlevania was iconic on the nes as one of the break-out franchises. Mega Man would be fantastic.
Believe me. I understand. Fingers crossed for both Lucas and Ness to be in there. Or put in Paula while you're at it, with a completely different set of powers.
Mother 3 is a game they never even cared enough about to localize, the chances of a sequel are nonexistent. Ness and Lucas both being playable is already a pretty generous representation.

There is no way they're goign to drop any of the original 12
It's just not going to happen; push it out of your mind.
Nor are they going to unnecessarily complicate the fighting system or character movesets.

Nintendo will have made up for the 6 month dry-spell with the Wii U for me.
All will be forgiven.

Even something really fucking out of left field like Team Fortress 2 characters.
I'd also like to see the Star Fox characters speak in SF64 quotes for the whole match.

But Ness is our only guarantee.

That doesn't mean it's impossible for them to be made
Just impossible for him to be involved, for one reason or another
But Mother 4 is not coming; that is neither here nor there
