I'm genuinely considering throwing caution to the wind and choosing 'significantly above target' for my performance rating this year.
It's one of those 'it's there but maybe eight people out of ten thousand get it per year' things, but man. If ever there was a year where I can justify it, it's this year.

So this is technically a school thing, but it's for the capstone, and is job like, so I'm going to dumb this bitching post here.
We're doing our capstone class, in which the assignment from the instructor is basically, "you all are in a group together. You've just graduated and decided to start your own business together, and I'm the owner of a real estate agency getting ready to expand, and I need an IT company to come in and bid on standing up a network for my business. You want the bid.
Go."
We've divided into teams, and the networks team has proposed the following topology:
For reference (and for those of you who don't know how to read that):
-There are two locations (left side and right side, the router in the middle (that's supposed to be a cloud) is the internet).
-Each location has two firewalls
-Each location has two routers
-Each location has two Layer 3 Switches (it's basically a piece of equipment designed to do the job of both a router and a switch, in some situations).
-Each location has two layer 2 switches (this is a conventional switch, and is basically a "smart hub"
-Each layer 2 switch connects to both layer 3 switches.
-Each layer 3 switch connects to both routers.
So...yeah. Oh, did I mention this company has, at most, 15 employees, 6 of which are going to be using wireless/mobile technology?
Oh also we have a $90k hardline budget ceiling, but it's a bid, so the cheaper (at value), the better.
And since the curriculum for this degree includes quite a bit of Cisco router/switch programming courses, they're adamant on Cisco, for everything- layer 2 switch, layer 3 switch, router, and firewall.
And each of those pieces of equipment is at least $2500
And the systems budget (which is significantly stripped down by comparison- only one server per side), is ~$30k already.
Yeah we're not gonna get the bid. We'll be lucky to get a B on the project.
I'm torn. On the one hand it's obviously way more than a small business like this will ever need. On the other hand, nobody else is arguing against it, and I'm not on the network team, so I kind of feel like it's not really call. I've voiced my concerns, but if that's what they honestly think we need to do, then I don't really see where I have a place to say no.
Of course, since I'm on Systems, I will then insist that each location have two servers, minimum, and all employees get both a desktop and a tablet. Because apparently there's no kill like overkill.
For comparison, my suggestion was each location get:
-One SonicWall all-in-one device (firewall, wireless access point, router, and switch, though it's only got a few ports).
-One Dell/Avaya VoIP-enhanced switch (switch explicitly geared toward Voice-over-IP, which is the telephony solution we're using).
-....half the fucking cost.
I need to get some prettied up network topology of our work network. Maybe when we clean out the server room and set up a proper rack I can slip having the contractors doing a network survey into the project.
Yeah, that is a ridiculously overblown network for a small company, even spanning two locations
Our network is a joke, but I've only been managing the IT side of things for around 6 months so for now it's adequate but holy shit does the decade old ideas behind network security need to die off, one day management will give me the budget I'm asking for and then I can go do some cool stuff.
I think I may have solved my problem. I asked them to do a packet tracer mock-up of the network (since we will have to include this in the final presentation). I'm hoping that whoever does that will see how asininely complex the idea is, and they'll just switch to something easier.

fakeedit: asininely is a word. Awesome.
MIght also point out that they have more routers, switches, and firewalls than they have users.

Yeeeah.
Seriously for that kind of setup you really only need one router and one switch on site, your VOIP system and your servers. You could probably even argue that you could live with having the servers at only one site to save on money at the expense of access times at the second site.

This year, you're one of those eight.
I've been at this job for five weeks.
Y'know, I'm not entirely sure what my biggest contribution to the business is yet.
Four weeks of threesomes with your boss's secretary and his wife?
Actually it was his wife and his 21 year old daughter.
Hey you have to make those evaluations look good.

Well I can see why the substance abuse rate of my profession is so high.

I don't even know what you do. I was just taking the easy setup for a masturbation joke.

Apply to volunteer at some places just to fill all the free time I have: no responses.
Get recommended to someone who owns a company by a family member who knows them, go on a somewhat informal interview: no response.
I guess i'm just unemployable, so there's no reason to keep trying anymore.

Where are you, what is your level of education, and what experience do you have?
So maybe when I get my personal iPad, I'll just transfer all the links and such and use that instead.
Wait. So what the hell are you using the iPads for?
