"New" Xbox 360 owner, what should I get?

edited February 2013 in Help / Advice Forum
Okay so I'm not really "new" but I haven't had an Xbox 360 for about three years after Assassin's Creed II broke it. Getting a replacement has been on my "to do" list for years, but I have a PS3 and felt an X360 wasn't really necessary for a long time.

Yesterday, I picked up the Star Wars Kinect Bundle and set it up. I have an existing library of games but I picked up two On Demand games I've wanted for awhile: Bayonetta (not X360 exclusive, but I heard it was the best version) and Crackdown 2.

Also, I did the license transfer but I know I owned Prince of Persia Classic at some point and it's not showing up as something I own. So a few questions:

1) I bought the HD transfer cable but I can't find my old Xbox 360. It's in my house somewhere...any ideas where it might be?

2) Anything I should know about Kinect or anything?

3) Any must-have games (newer than three years ago - I have Halo 3 and GoW 2 for instance but no ODST or GoW 3), either retail, On Demand, Arcade, Indie, or whatever? Especially exclusives?

4) Is there any situation where my old licenses wouldn't properly transfer to this system?

Thanks!

edit: Deadly Premonition was another reason I wanted this system but the PS3 is getting the Director's Cut soonish so I'm waiting for that.

Oh and I just remembered another two exclusives I wanted were Case West and Case Zero.

You play the Mass Effect series? How about Alan Wake? Fallout: New Vegas?

Mass Effect trilogy on PC. About halfway through ME3 with my ME1 career character.

Have Alan Wake on PC also.

FNV I beat on PC right when Skyrim came out :). Still feel bad about rushing through the shitty ending path I chose, but I wanted to play Skyrim.

I guess a good rule of thumb here is that if a game was also available on PC I may have bought it there.

ODST is definitely worth a playthrough, as is Halo 4. Other than that it's slim pickings for the type of games you seem to like. Forza 4 was great, the Batman games, the newest Transformers game?

you mentioned if it was on pc, you probably have it but here we go anyway:
    Farcry 3? Deadspace? Xcom?

Forza! I will get that, forgot about it. ODST sadly doesn't seen to be on On Demand - I'm kinda surprised.

I have and beat both Batmans on PC. Have Transformers but haven't really played it.

get a Gamefly membership. ~$20/month gets you a constant stream of games (one at a time) to try and either buy if you want or discard

i've had it for a few years, and have stopped actually buying games.... i figure even if i keep a game for three months it still is less than buying it outright from a store, and very often i only keep games for a weekend b/c they're not what i thought they'd be

Halo 3: ODST and Reach if you want to finish out the Bungie Halos, Halo 4 if you want to get in on the new 343 Halo.

Red Dead Redemption doesn't have a PC port yet AFAIK and is fucking incredible.

Lost Odyssey if you don't already have it and like RPGs. So good. Also so cheap to pick up.

I came here to recommend Deadly Premonition, good to see you're already on that.

I haven't played it personally, but I am chomping at the bit to see what NieR is about, since so many people say it's absolutely amazing. I would imagine it's in the same vein as Deadly Premonition story-wise.

Fable II was good but Fable III was rushed and incomplete
Halo & Gears of War games of course
    Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts
Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster (if you have kids, it's the best Kinect game other than Dance Central)
Project Sylpheed - Squaresoft space shooter - great gameplay, and decent, if overwrought story.
    Earth Defense Force 2017
Naruto: Rise of a Ninja and the Broken Bond (pretty fun mix of fighter gameplay and Zelda exploration/power-ups/puzzles - I liked these despite having not seen the anime).
Also, if you want another Kinect title that is decent, "You're in the Movies" is a good party game - especially for non-gamers.
For JRPGs there is Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey though both leave much to be desired IMO. If you have a PS3, play Tales of Vesparia or Ni No Kuni instead.

Uhhh, Tales of Vesperia hasn't been released on the PS3 in English yet (not even unofficially?) to my knowledge. And various people are disappointed by that since it's an enhanced rerelease. But it is in fact an amazingly good RPG on the 360 and I should feel bad for having it slip my mind.

If you are into puzzles (and by puzzles I mean rudimentary archaeology) FEZ is great, and has a great soundtrack.

  • bean23bean23 Registered User regular
@Essee - thanks for the correction. That makes Tales a great choice for the 360. I had heard that the PS3 version was enhanced though I played it to death on the 360 so I never looked into it further.

Thanks for all the input. I have most of the games people mentioned already, either on the PC or PS3. I guess outside of Halo, Gears of War, and Forza there aren't too many X360 exclusives?

I picked up Tales of Vesperia, though, and ordered ODST. ODST is before Reach, right? What about Halo Wars, is that any good?

I still haven't tried Kinect out. Is that Fable Journey thing any good?

Giant Bomb (Brad) seemed to like it. Sounds like it doesn't try to do anything too crazy and so works well. He enjoyed the interactions with the horse.

I'd second the Project Gothem games, so awesome. Both 3 and 4 are great - I liked 3's content better, but 4 added bikes and has some really sweet weather effects. Then play Forza Horizon (it's an improved, open world PGR in my view and it definitely scratched that itch since I don't think we'll see another true PGR). The atmosphere is a little cheesy, but look past that and the game is incredible. I could spend hours just driving without actually accomplishing anything in that game.

Of course if you're looking for more simmy stuff, then Forza 4 is the definitive title, but all are great investments.

    I"d recommend the following
    Dead Space
    The Darkness (both games)
    Dark Souls
    Warhammer 40k Space Marine
Saints Row 3 (1 and 2 if you want to follow the highly genital storyline)
    Mass Effect 1-3
    Borderlands 1 and 2

I mentioned some of the better exclusives (IMO) as I assumed that's what you were interested in. If you already own Kinect, I'd definitely recommend Dance Central and if you want a party game, "You're in the Movies".

Dust: An Elysian Tale is currently still exclusive to XBLA, so you should certainly pursue that.

Also Beyond Good and Evil, which I'm told is the superior version out there, even over PC.

Sorry I didn't skip your post, I'm thinking of getting EDF 2017 and Project Sylpheed. Maybe Dance Central but I basically just play with myself at home (don't take that the wrong way).

Didn't know that about BG&E. I have the PC version but maybe I will grab the XBLA version. Was checking out Dust too, will probably get it. There are so many recent games with Dust in the title I got confused. From Dust sucked, at least the PC version did. Dust leaves a bad taste in my mouth (literally, it tastes quite dirty).
