A month ago two of my best friends and I were all set to move into a place. Then ones dad got really ill and he had to move back home to help take care of him. So the other friend and I are splitting the rent, but man its killing us. So we need a third. I know there are a few websites, like roomster and roommates.com, but I have no idea how legit those are. Should we just post an ad, in the paper or on craigslist or something? Neither of us have any experience with this.

I've gone the craigslist route before and had less than stellar luck, but I know other people who have found great roommates/lifelong friends that way, so it really varies. If you feel like trying your luck, you can always place an ad and turn away anyone who turns up who doesn't click with you or puts out any kind of weird vibe. The people I know who have had the most success are the ones who took the time to write out exactly what they were looking for in their ad (most of my friends are musicians/artists so they always include that to get the most interesting replies and to avoid wasting the time of people who might not be too keen on people coming and going with all kinds of gear at odd hours) and interviewed a bunch of potential roommates before making a decision.
