The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I finally got around to buying Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow for the DS. I ordered it from Amazon and was pleased to see it was only $15.
It got here yesterday, and here's the case it's in:
Is this some kind of joke? Did I get ripped off somehow? Or do they now sell extremely popular DS games in shitty-looking "greatest hits" cases?
If this is a legit case, then I'm not going to throw a tantrum over it. I did only pay $15. And the back of the case looks legit enough:
except for the little red strip that says KONAMI'S BEST KONAMI'S BEST
The main thing that worries me is that the shrink-wrapping looks like the kind that stores do with returned merchandise on-site, rather than a factory seal:
Anyway, somebody tell me this is all kosher so I can stop worrying that I somehow bought a DS game from a pirate through Amazon.

I can't really comment on the legitimacy of the product you received, but I would like to mention that the quality of the shrink-wrap really does vary from title to title. I'm not sure if it's because different plants produce different games and have different procedures or what, but if you go to a place like Circuit City and compare, you'll see that some games/publishers have really shitty wrapping on them that looks no different from a Gstop re-wrap where they used a spool of plastic and a heat gun. Others actually have folded and sealed wrapping - for example, [most] 1st party games.
Okay, so it's totally legit then? I was more worried that I had somehow gotten a pirate copy than anything else; I don't want my game saves to disappear randomly due to a shitty battery.
I don't really mind the case that much, although it does look stupid. If I really care, I can always go to one of the game cover art sites and print out the original copy.
And Sporky, I'm definitely lolling at your photoshop
Yea Gamestop's website had this thing where it was advertising the Dawn of Sorrow price drop, I went in to pick it up after searching the stores and saw that shit. I hate greatest hits cases, so I went home and got if eBay because I'm anal.
For the record, this isn't Nintendo's greatest hits, this is Konami doing a greatest hits package.
In fact, now that I think about it, i've never seen a Nintendo DS "Player's Choice" packaging. It'll be interesting to see what they do.
I don't think they ever did GBA greatest hits, so I don't think it's a given that they'll ever do DS greatest hits.
They did, there's only a handful, and it took them until just last year to start doing it. The packaging redesigns are tasteful, with a simple banner at the top.
I wish more companies would do what Nintendo frequently does, use the GH label as an overlay of the real label underneath. Once you throw it away, bam, it doesn't look retarded anymore.
Sony does this sometimes. I think it might just be in the interim while they print new labels, but I've definitely purchased PS2 Greatest Hits that were only marked on the shrink wrap.

If box-art bothers you, you should get the European cover. It looks considerably better than the NA version.
It goes to this. The only thing is they have the best logo in the middle, but it's so much better. This so happens to be avaliable on all my Konami The Best games.

Wait.. the yellow "Greatest Hits" stuff is a label, not printed?

I'm pretty sure all of mine are actually printed on the label.

I hate when 'Special Editions' of items don't include all the packaging given in the standard version. Sure, give me an extra sleeve, but I should have everything that is included in the standard version aswell as my bonus stuff (see loads of CDs that I have special editions of that wont fit in my CD rack)

Also,
EDIT: Sporky, you forgot the extra Konami logo in the bottom right corner.
I'll save yoooooouuuuuuu
Also, the "Best Of" packaging is horrendus, but rest assured that it's very similar to how the "Best Of" line looks like in Japan as well.

I'd buy all my games in hot-pink-and-green Tingle-covered cases if it saved me five bucks on 'em.

The system's been out for over two years now and we still haven't seen any, so I'm not holding my breath.
at least it's a bit funny compared to the generic, "classic" case i have
I'm fairly sure I remember seeing the Super Mario Advance remakes in Player's Choice packaging. But that may be me going delusional.
I wish they would do more of them!

Okay, you see they have the best versions of their games in Japan, right, but when I turn the page over:

Greatest Hits box art never looks better than the original.
It's like a work of art.
