I never finished the first one, but I preordered this one anyway because I didn't want to finally finish the first and then be unable to find this one. Wifi? Sweet! I preordered from gamestop and they sent me this neat stylus last month. They usually don't send them that early. Anyway, its neat. It looks like a stick and lights up at the tip if you rub it. It also has a screen cleaner filled with water and tiny plastic fish.
The odd thing, is that I was looking at my shipping information for the order, and it looks like they are sending me another one with my copy of the game. Stupid of them, but at least its in my favor. (They are also interpeting "Free slow ass shipping" as 3 day shipping. Lucky me!)

Small tip here: You get the ability to search one of three things before you leave the ship. Apparently (since I restarted about 5 times) it's random whether you find anything or not. Look for !!! instead of ...
Oh, christ, yes. I hated that thing. 10 zillion retries, gathering 5 stones every time and when I finally DO get it done all I've built is the BASE of a bed?
I bought this today but I haven't started it yet. You can choose to be the boy or the girl, right? Is there a significant difference in gameplay depending on what gender you pick? In the first one, the girl pretty much does nothing except wait for Keith to bring ingredients for cooking. What about this one?
I'm playing the girl and I'm pretty much doing everything the guy did in the first one. I don't know what the differences are but I'm guessing it has something to do with what you can ask the other person to do. The guy, so far, can collect firewood or food if I ask him. He gets pissed if I do it tho. The relationship aspect is a little stronger in this one it seems.
I ROLLED A LOG HOT DAMN
Also, spear fishing is a LOT easier and more accurate. And cooking is a little more intricate. The cooking segments are kind of like Cooking Mama Lite.
Yeah, I suck mightily at pics/details. I admit it.
It's a game where you play (technically) two teenagers stranded on a tropical island. The game centers around you finding food so you don't die and, while finding food, finding material to make things to help you find bigger food.
Case in point: I'm foraging for mushrooms. I find a twigs and tree bark. She figures out she can make a fire starter with those so we can have a fire lit in the cave at night so we lose less health at night.
Another: I find a straight branch. She figures out she can make a spear. She finds a stone and figures out she can make an even BETTER spear. Now I can spear fish and make much much better food.
Eventually you learn which mushrooms and recipies make you all powered up and can last long enough to start making mini trips to explore the island and leave your partner alone for a few days.

THEN YOU PUNCH GATORS
Sounds like you've got the woman doing all the work.
Is this one better then the first one? I got up to the point where you build the raft and cross the lake, but for some reason I couldn't move into the new cave nor could I survive long enough to finish the puzzles even at full food, energy, water, and loaded up on food and energy mushrooms.

You're not meant to finish those puzzles in one shot. You're supposed to do as many as you can and then retreat back home. The first game takes a nosedive after you cross the lake. After you beat the puzzles, the game takes on another genre shift. I didn't like the endgame at all. But the beginning was good enough that I highly anticipated this sequel.
I just bought this a half hour ago. I didn't buy the first one when it came out, because I didn't have a DS at that time, and now it's impossible to find for a reasonable price. So I bought this one right away--I didn't want it to disappear.
Am I missing anything if I play this without playing the first DS game?
I'm definitely in the mood for this kind of game again. I don't get Harvest Moon/LiB type games very often, so when I do they're pretty special. Reading Magic Pink's reactions it seems like the sequel has fixed the few things that were wrong with the first game.
I wonder how the graphics are this time around. I was pretty impressed by the original game's graphics a year after it was released, so I'm intrigued to whether they improved on them or not.
So, I thought the last one was alright but never really finished it after crossing the lake. Is the relationship aspect more improved, i.e. you actually talk to the other person once in a while? Is it really worth buying after the last one...like, is there enough of a difference between the two? Also, exactly how fun is it to punch gators?

The reviews are awful but honestly they're a little off the mark. The game has a VERY steep learning curve. Well, not really learning curve; you need to do some very specific things right off the bat or you won't live past the second day.

It's not as much of a sequal as it is an improvement of the first. Cooking is expanded, the relationship thing has more triggers with what you do, there's lots more hints as to what's going on... It's sort of up in the air. If you didn't get the first, definitely get the second. If you did and really didn't like the first, there's not quite enough new stuff here to warrant a purchase.
I have not punched a gator yet but really, how can it NOT be fun?
Well I had to restart once just like in the first game due to bad but now that I have my spear I seem to be doing okay and I'm going on day 4 now. They seemed to have really improved the fishing like Magic Pink said earlier. In the first game I would have to hit a small amount to the side to hit fish but now I can actually touch the fish and catch them. This is very helpful. Now my problem is trying to find the stamina mushroom for my file. Once I find it, I can actually go exploring. I'm liking it a lot so far and I just hope they don't give us another 10 rooms of difficult block puzzles.
Am I missing anything if I play this without playing the first DS game?
I hope not. What kid is stupid enough to get stranded twice?
This isn't The Hatchet!
Brian did not get stranded twice.
Researchers asked him to take them to the forest and Brian became so hardcore he made them throw all their noob-faggot equipment away. He stranded HIMSELF because he's so awesome. Too bad it all goes to shit.

I haven't played LiB2 (no cash, I'll buy it before it becomes rare) but I don't see any reason why you'd have trouble. The sequel sounds just like the first game with improvements.
One tip to people considering this.. if you like the concept of the game, please do not let the reviews discourage you too heavily. This is not the sort of game that gets good reviews. You're doing tasks that many would consider "repetitive gameplay design" in order to survive, and while it obviously isn't for everyone, I think it is pulled off very well. In fact, I can't think of another game like this one in atmosphere and feel. It's not an amazing game, but it's a well-executed concept, so don't dismiss it just because of the reviews. Do your own research to determine if you would like it or not.
Nintendo Power gave it a 5.0, but the review was written by a certain Giancarlo Varanini. Apparently he just arrived on staff from OPM and this is like his first published thing for NP. Ugh.
Ugh.
It seems clear that he hasn't played or enjoyed the previous LiB, and that makes his review rather negligible. The only thing that concerns me is what he describes as "a weak battle system", although he doesn't elaborate.
Whatever. I'm gonna break out my original LiB and kill some goats.
I picked this up earlier tonight, had to restart once already.
Not seeing the stones that let you hop over to the trees you get your first stick to make a spear from basically set me on a downward spiral for a while. Trying to forage enough clams and coconuts to cook regularly was quickly killing us.

If they are better it's barely noticable. I, personally, think they're better.

I likes to empowers the wimmins I does.
It's Survival Kids 4, yeah. They just changed the name for the US, I think.
No, you can skip the first one. They have nothing to do with each other story wise.

My bane now seems to be getting enough firewood.
