According to Kotaku, bungie.net was hacked and the hackers jacked some XBL accounts. Though i'm not sure what's the most they can do w/ your account other than spend your points, lol.
I found a flaw with the website a while back that let you see any gamer tags name and address. Ive sent the details to multiple people and it still hasnt been fixed so it doesnt really surprise me its taken them so long to sort this one out.
Finisterre says that he called Microsoft Tech and they confirmed that "accounts are being stolen and that "Hackers have control of Xbox live and there is nothing we can do about it"
It's not very good PR to proclaim your service's Apocalypse is imminent and unstoppable. Unless the 'hackers' have physically absconded with the server hardware, there is always something they can do about it.
They could just take the Xbox Live network offline until they can find out who did what. It wouldn't be the end of the world if little Jimmy Shitcock couldn't play Halo 2 for a whole day.

No fucking way someone from MS would say that.
Kotaku is full of shit.

They were probably talking to some call center flunkie in india that had no idea what a hacker was.

Then maybe they could have linked to an article that doesn't sound like it was written by a reactionary douchebag? With something like this, you know there have to be articles written by someone credible with some kind of valid, real quotes.

"i'm in ur live acccountz, spendin' ur pointz!!"
That being said, I'll be righteously pissed if my points have been spent...
On anything other than SotN Hopefully they'll have some courtesy and some good taste.

I think I have $1 worth of points just sitting there. I think I can live without that, should worse come to worst.

Edit: also, Cnet's story
all of which feature the "nothing we can do" quote. which to my understanding, comes from a tech support lackey, not a MS higher up.
So the lackey may have literally meant, "Nothing we (here at the call center) can do about it (stop calling you fucking asshole)"
(Interesting side point: My accent seems to come through more when I'm right angry)
or, like, this sucks, but i doubt you need to start watching for horsemen just yet.
