SE++, Lend me your Linux support

So, this is probably a problem for another forum, but I'm up for a laugh today, so here's what's going on. I'm having some kind of swap-eating memory leak in Kubuntu Edgy the slowly swallows up my swap, prevents me from opening programs after so much is eaten, and at length locks up the whole system. I think the problem may be with the nvidia sound drivers i'm using with my nforce2 chipset. Any ideas SE?
Also, here's some IRC logs that led up to this, spoilered for longness
(thepassenger) so reboot?
(moe_fwacky) every 4 hours?
(thepassenger) moe: why not, you can pretend you're running win98
(thepassenger) ho ho ho snaps
(moe_fwacky) what would you recommend i try weretac0?
(@weretac0) sell your computer.. buy a camel
(@DaySleeper) you could totally install linux on a camel
(revolve) are you sure that the swap is actually "full"
(revolve) and not just allocated
(revolve) to be used whenever
(moe_fwacky) well i'm basing off my system monitor, since i can't launch anything to
(moe_fwacky) tell me otherwise
(revolve) is your computer slow?
(moe_fwacky) a little more than normal when switching desktops
(moe_fwacky) but overall it's pretty normal
(moe_fwacky) although, once it gets "past the point of no return"
(revolve) here is my expert analysis
(revolve) your computer is a decepticon
(moe_fwacky) ...
(moe_fwacky) SE++ should do tech support
(Niji) indeed.
Open up Gnome System Monitor (gnome-system-monitor, open from the run dialog or terminal). Sort by "Writable Memory". When things start to chug, take a look at whatever's on top - that's probably the culprit.
Oh, right. Well, use whatever the KDE equivilent is then. If it doesn't work for whatever reason, pop open a terminal and run 'top'. You can use the < and > keys to change the sort column to 'RES'.
I'm gonna get a Macbook this summer, but I don't think I'll get a Pro.

Well, it doesn't look like anything is using up nearly the amount of memory that's noted as being used. This leads me to believe that somewhere, something is not dumping the memory after it's done with it, causing a continuous buildup until there's not enough swap to do anything. Firefox, checkgmail, superkaramba and gaim are at the top of this list organized by Res. Firefox is at 45m, the others are between 15m and 19m and various processes are lower. The memory percentages only add up to about 50%, so i don't know what's up with the other 50%. That's the status, i'm about to go to work, and when I come back, this thing will have undoubtedly crashed, hopefully yielding some kind of data on the terminal screen.

Well, I solved the problem by reinstalling. Everything seems to be working fine now, even the sound. I always say you can solve almost any PC problem by reinstalling.
i'm thinking of switching from suse to ubuntu
but my suse box is rock solid
oh the urge for change is always great
the other day
i actually saw a bunch of guys fighting on the merits of stage 1 vs stage 3 installs of gentoo
i mean holy shit
talk about nerd fight
I've been using ubuntu for development work for about a year now, and I'm at the point where I prefer it over every other distribution.
And if you ever need their support, it's fucking awesome.

For those of you who doubt KDE, here's my current screenshot (spoilered for hugeness)
I plan on changing that penguin to the RSPD Fruit Fucker.

Ubuntu has some awesome community support. #ubuntu and #ubuntu-offtopic (on freenode) are some of the best IRC channels ever, and the forums are like a treasure trove of accumulated beginner-guru documentation.

I'm also a big fan of http://linuxquestions.org. I swear that some of those dudes just sit refreshing the index all day to see who can answer you fastest. (And it's almost always good advice.)
Posts
then buy a macbook pro
top
it should tell you how much swap is being used as well as facts on program memory usage
(does that work in kde?)
Just don't get the glossy screen.

That'll be your problem, right there.
seriously now
gnome or bust
Fixed.
Dickass.
Top is not a product of KDE or Gnome (hint:you run it from the shell), it's part of the default installation package for most every *nix distro.
gnome makes me happy
shell keeps me sane
i thought so...but that last note was to cover my ass in case i was being an idiot
