If the graphics were awesome, the frame rate was awesome, the dialogue was realistic and gripping, and the voice acting believable, it would be a better game.

No, that would make it a better STORY not a better game. Well, the frame rate would make for a better game but that sounds like some other sort of trouble. I've played the heck out of the thing with 2 players and we've never seen any slowdown yet of the sort you describe.

And yes, let's just say for example, that your squadmates were actual characters with even a slight backstory or even just a bit of personality. Or even voices that were distinguishable from each other. That would be cool.

What? Why? They're in the game to get eaten by ants. I don't need to know who they are. They're redshirts from the word go.

The men die in droves, often by your hand, while engaged in a fight with GIANT ANTS, Godzilla-alikes, UFOs, and huge walkers with cone-shaped plasma launchers that have a purple barber pole-like swirl on them. They deserve roughly as much character development as the average footman in the average RTS.

Actually, if they were deeply developed, that'd be REALLY hilarious. But that's not really the best use of the developer's resources.

I suppose it would've been neat to have one or two characters with background though.

Compare this to something like Halo where there are a few characters who you get background on even when the majority are faceless, nameless NPCs.

Maybe Storm 2 or Ranger 1 or something could've been led by someone of note.

Think about Gears of War. Did Baird have any backstory? Did Cole Train, or any of them? No, but I still knew who they were during battle. Gears of War would not have been nearly as good if you were just fighting alongside a bunch of "red shirts."

Gears of War and EDF are different games. You stuck by the same people in GoW because the game's combat was based on tactical skirmishes and not daily apocalyptic invasions, so your teammates were able to stick around as opposed to delivering a few amusing quips and then dying horribly. Because of that, you were able to become familiar with them. Your teammates in EDF number in the dozens and it's impossible to save all of them (or, on harder difficulties, any of them), so it would be idiotic to give them individual personalities on such a budget title. Waste of time and energy.

I get the feeling you bought the game with false expectations and you're frustrated because it's hitting on completely different notes.

It depends on the story or game environment. In that kind of environment, it was vital for you to kinda know who you were working with because it's basically the same crew through the whole game. In comparison to a game like EDF 2017 where the emphasis is on a massive invasion where you're really the only hero who sees so much against a fairly untrained group of soldiers, not knowing anyone else seems to sit well with the theme.

If Gears of War was based around larger scale battles, you'd start seeing a lot more redshirts in the game, instead of the story following a few specific characters.

What you're telling us is that story and aesthetics matter in the games you play, which is very cool. It also means this probably isn't the game for you.

When I used to play Serious Sam at LAN parties way back when, we didn't play it because the game was aesthetically pleasing or a serious game, we played it because it was just complete, mindless fun.

Nah. I'll admit my Gears of War comparison wasn't very well thought out. I know they're different.

In fact I did know what to expect from this game. I read a lot about it and watched videos. I just gave my initial impressions, that's all. Like I said, I'll keep playing for a bit, maybe bring it out when friends come over.

It was $18, I'm over it. I'm glad you all love it so much. The end.

You value plot and graphics over pure fun. Nothing wrong with that.

Oddly, I thought the graphics in EDF were great. I don't see a reason to complain about them.

ha, I love it when there's so much shit going on that the game starts slowing down. Some of the tunnels and walker levels are great for this. You just keep shooting and screaming and eventually you pull through, born in the ichor of a thousand dead space ants/robots/dinorsaurs.

However, he does have a point. If the npc's had names, then you could get pissed at them personally for running right in front of you and your rocket of death. The resulting vendettas would give you more reasons to kill them right away in each level.

I do always play with my own music, though. Some http://www.myspace.com/blackmayonnaise or Japanese metal goes quite well with it.

What ends up burning me is when a corpse flies in front of me right when I fire. It's even worse when it's a corpse I shot hundreds of feet into the air with my previous rocket.

lawl. Did somebody just compare this to GoW!? Insanity. It's pretty clear EDF is leagues above it. Sure GoW has the story, the graphics, the voice acting and the frame-rate.......... but the gameplay? That goes to EDF. It's balls out gaming at its finest. Don't think, just shoot.

There are probably some more, but those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

You'll also find that certain named groups of people that come to support you are armed differently.

Scout 1 is like the last squad that comes to help you in the final mission. In fact, depending on how long you let each phase of that particular mission drag, you'll get to hear more dialogue from HQ.

Ohhhhh dear. Global Defence Force came in the mail today and it appears I've made a mistake.

I got Global Defence Force Tactics, and it appears to be in direct competition with Advance Wars on the GBA.

Please try to avoid this game to avoid disappointment in the Earth Defence franchise :)

True. But when they make it up a hill following you and your promises of energy and armor, there's nothing sweeter than turning around and dousing them in flames.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Enemies have a certain distance they can see, which varies from enemy to enemy. Gunships have a larger vertical distance than horizontal, robots have a hard time finding you but rarely lose sight of you, etc. Ants can almost always find you if you're close enough, but if you're far away, they can't see you (I believe some allies even make mention of this). Spiders have amazing vision all around, except for directly behind them. Mind you, all of this is a moot point if a single bullet from your general direction hits any enemy in a "convoy". Then they all immediately know where you are.

So, take the mission King, for example. The very first King Spider you see has already seen you at the beginning of the level. He's gunning for you and there's no way to get him to lose sight of you. The other two (I think) can be snuck by until you get in to an advantageous position to blast then with rockets. The only way you can do this is to hide until the one you're going for first is turned around, then running around the city to get to the playground area. Now, this is great until one of your idiot teammates sees a smaller spider who hasn't seen you, decides to attack, and every spider in that unit is coming straight for your ass.

They can be useful, yes. They can also totally screw you up.

This works fine until you get to Hardest.

At that point, going gung-ho will get you killed. The Ant AI, especially, changes to really fuck you up. They no longer shoot acid the second they see you. They get as close to you as possible and then bathe you in it. This prevents you from shooting rockets to clear them out, as you'd kill yourself.

So the second level that requires you to kill the anthills that the insects spill out of (in the low 20s) on hard -- after killing the first 2 holes and advancing on the next one I get to a point where there are so many guys that I can't make any progress. I can kill everything in a wave, but this often requires backpedaling and by the time I kill everything the next wave is close enough that I am not gaining any ground. Any attempt to push forward leads to my death. They move extremely fast so I don't have much time to kill many with rockets/grenades. I've been using the horizontal spread shotgun or my best AR to take them out up close.

I'm thinking of bring C4 and dropping some then running back and blowing it up as they run across to kill a ton quickly, but having C4 take up one of my slots will make things difficult.

Any tips? I've got like the next 10+ levels beat on hard but I cannot get this one.

I know the one you're talking about, but I think you can actually take it if you kite diagonally, as long as you have a good shotgun. One thing you might want to do is farm one of the 40+ missions for weapons and then go back and try that one if you haven't already.
