So since my copy was stolen I'm going to have to go out and find another. Saw one in a store today without a box and manual, screw that, I'll keep looking.
Oh, I was browsing through Game Informer just now and they were implying pretty heavily that EDF sucks. Fuck you Game Informer!

Anyone who implies that EDF sucks probably hates fun. Does Game Informer hate fun? I don't read it.
This thread reminds me that I still need to finish my Hard run. Not looking forward to trying Hardest or Inferno without a co-op partner, but these trials we must endure for sweet, sweet Achievements. And better guns.
How pretty heavily? Is there anywhere I can read these words without having to pick up a gaming mag? Those things are relics and make me feel old.
They kept going on and on about how you shouldn't waste your money on shitty games just because they are cheap and then had a screenshot of EDF. Subtle...
Aren't they the same people that gave Paper Mario 2 a "four out of ten" or something?
It was like a 6 or 6.5 and their excuse, their actual excuse was that they gave it a low score not based on quality or individual merits but simply because they felt their audience wouldn't like the game. So they reviewed the game low because the felt people wouldn't like it... o_O
I bought this from GameCrazy for $7, and Jesus Christ does it ever take the insane blowing-shit-up and crank it to 11. I'm really liking the game, but those giant robots are absolutely fucking me up. I'm playing on normal up to the first giant fortress section, but I just can not kill those things fast enough to keep them from gang raping me.
I've checked the weapons lists and I think I've got everything I can find up through normal lvl 12, so I think I'm just choosing the wrong ones since I blasted through everything prior to this. Are there any weapons that are particularly effective against those damn robots?

Have you played through easy yet?
The game really rewards going through the difficulties in order.
But sniper rifles to the head/weakspot work well on the robots, so do the triple firing rocket launchers.
Huh, might have to try the sniper rifles. I've only tried the massive damage one-shot variety and found it horribly lacking. Maybe one of the other models I've got. the rocket launchers seems to miss them a ton and the missiles home in on the crappy flying drones that are all over the place. All I've really been able to kill them with is the assault rifle.
And the weapon drops are the same for normal and easy, and up till now it's been a cakewalk anyway. Maybe I'l drop it down for this mission and then redo it after I come up with some better weapons.

This game kind of bucks the typical easy>normal>hard>insane route, where you just choose the higher difficulty if you want more of a challenge. You kind of have to play through on easy, before you play through on normal, before you play through on hard, etc. Since your health bar steadily increases with you, and you unlock progressively stronger weapons no matter which difficulty you're on, by the time you've finished easy, your character will be well armed and resilient enough to take on the normal difficulty.
It also seems like there's two versions of those things, too - one that is normal, and one that has some super-special death machine gun. Some of them hardly touch me, and then their neighbor makes me cry blood tears.
I guess I COULD play through on easy, but even normal hasn't been tough before know. And the problem isn't that I don't have enough life, but that my weapons don't do enough damage. I guess I could pick up all the way through 'end of normal' weapons playing easy, but then I'd replay all of normal with no new weapon drops.
Many weapon drops are based on what difficulty you're playing on, if you're worried about that. You're certainly not going to find every weapon in one playthrough of one difficulty.
EDIT: Also remember that you're not stuck playing one difficulty; the game gives you the chance to change the difficulty every single level for a reason.

yeah the robots aren't even the hardest monster, you should play through easy to get a better weapon selection/more life.
The spider hordes were cake the first few time I faced them - I can kill them faster than they can get to me, and they tend to cluster up to get blown to hell. The robots just will. not. die. If I clear this mission on easy I can farm the next until I get some new weapons, I think. Maybe I'll just have to do that. I'll give it another shot with the sniper rifle and see if I can squeeze through it that way. If that's reasonably effective at killing the robots I should be able to make it.
On the flip side, you can also play the first few missions on a higher difficulty in the hopes of getting a higher level gun. But maybe level 12 normal is a little early to be trying that, I don't remember.
Sniper rifles and shotguns are pretty good against robots. Basically anything that has enough force to screw up their balance will be great because they'll be unable to hit you properly. Rocket/missile launchers too but they can be tough to hit robots with because they're tall and slender and can move around a bit.
Yeah, I miss a ton with the missile launchers and rockets. It sounds like trying the sniper rifles instead is probably a good idea. Maybe even shotgun/sniper, since the SGs probably do a ton of damage if they're in close.
The more I think about it the more I think using the missilies too much might be my main trouble. They auto select their target so I can't focus fire, and then instead of going from 10 robots to 5 I go from 10 to 10 at half health. Or even worse than that, considering the second wave that's giving me trouble comes with stacks of those weak fliers that suck up missiles since they tend to be closer.
I'll try it one more time and if that doesn't work I'll drop it to easy until I can farm a new assault rifle. I think that's in the next level, too.

yeah don't use the homing missiles, they are awful.
If I remember correctly the launcher that shoots 3 rockets at the same time that don't home, are really nice.
I thought the main difference between the rockets and the missiles was that the missiles were homing and the rockets weren't. I tried the 3 rocket gun, but it seems to miss the robots since the rockets are kind slow moving.
Honestly I tend to use the shotguns vs. Walking Arms. As long as you're on the ball and dodging/rolling around behind them whenever possible, and blasting away whenever you're not flying in the air or rolling, you've got a good chance of taking them out.
Every type of enemy in the game requires a different strategy to deal with. With Spiders, you want to take them out from as long-ranged as possible, Ants require mass spamming of Assault Rifles or Missiles(or Flamethrowers), Gunships go down best to Rockets, UFOs require Snipers, and the Walking Arms die to shotguns.
Shotgun seemed to work really well in the canyon mission a few down the line, but that was fighting one at Hector a time and those are easy missions anyway.
What's all this 'play through on easy' nonsense? I saved easy mode untill after I beat Normal mode. If you're struggling you just need to put some more thought into your weapon loadout.
Shotguns do indeed wreck Hectors up close, but I prefer to save the weapon slot and take them on with an assault rifle. Generally their flailing arms stun animation will keep you safe at close range.
Don't use sniper rifles on the saucers, rapid fire missles are your best bet. Snipers will take down the dropships much faster than Rockets do, however.
And when you're underground the flamethrowers clear out tunnels like nobodies business. Speaking of special weapons, turrets are great on open maps, or when the enimes are coming from one direction.
Also finally beat the final level of Global Defense Force. Holy shit. If you live in a pal region, have a PS2 and love EDF 2017 you have litterally no excuse not to hunt this game down. It's not even that hard to find. I cannot describe how amazing this game is. It's not even expensive, it was only £10 when it was new, I got my copy in a CEX for £2.
Yep. Cheap and amazing, with full split-screen co-op. Truly an amazing game.
Still can't beat the final level on Hardest, but I'm slowly chewing through Inferno. Eventually I'll have enough health saved up to claim victory over the damn Mothership.
I actually really like the shotgun. I really only use the assault rifle when shit gets close enough I can't use explosives, and at that range the shotgun ruins everything. It'll take out multiple enemies at close range. I do need to just experiment with different loadouts, but it helped a lot when the hectors dropped the machine gun for those slow firing plasma cannons that almost always miss.
That'd be a great move if your most powerful enemy wasn't one dude on foot with a rifle, Ravagers. I also wonder how useless the EDF airforce was to get wiped by those crappy fliers.

Are you aware that beating every stage on all 5 difficulties with both characters unlocks IMPOSSIBLE MODE?
I'm still stuck on the really big Godzilla in GDF.
Damned thing and its city-long fire.
Long range is suicide, you cannot dodge the fire attacks. Get under it's legs, you'll get stomped on a lot, but that doesn't do nearly as much damage. I beat him by flying around his crotch area and repeatedly shooting him with the battle ram. The battle ram is civilization, flying on top of a dropship and taking it out in one hit is amazing.

I have been trying close range, but the thing's annoyingly fast once it starts running. Haven't tried the Battle Ram, though- might have to give that a shot.

They were probably just a Ranger team. Fuckers always get killed and leave Storm to pick up the slack.
Seeing Storm 1 show up must be terrifying. On the one hand, you're probably going to win the fight and protect the lives of eveyone on earth. On the other, you're good as fucking dead.

The worst part is you don't know if you're going to die from a giant insect's acidic fluids or a stray missile from the reckless superhuman commanding you.

That's freaking SWEET
Edit: Release date is February 11th, 2010. It also has 4 player online co-op. WTF? That's crazy for a Wii title.
What does that have to do with EDF?
I never asked for this!

Judge for yourself. From the same issue, referring to Borderlands...

GI is probably one of the gaming magazines that will survive simply because it comes free with an EBstop card..

The other thing you can do is try playing the higher difficulty to get an uber-weapon drop.
But to tackle that you will need the extra health you earn through easy...
I'll try it one more time and if that doesn't work I'll drop it to easy until I can farm a new assault rifle. I think that's in the next level, too.
