Skies of Arcadia came out around the same time (just before, actually) FF IX, and was so much better.

    But I digress.

Has there been any new news on Revenant Wings since those shots forever ago? I loved FFIII DS and need more.

Here's a list of Sony games from 2001 (FFIX) through 2003 (FFX). Mayhaps you could indicate said period:

    PlayStation 2 Final Fantasy X 07/19/01
    PlayStation Memories Off 2nd 09/27/01
    PlayStation 2 All-Star Professional Wrestling II 11/22/01
    PlayStation Final Fantasy Tactics 12/20/01

WonderSwan Color Final Fantasy IV 03/28/02
PlayStation 2 Nichibeikan Pro Baseball: Final League 04/25/02

    PlayStation 2 Final Fantasy X 01/16/03
    PlayStation Final Fantasy Origins 03/14/03
Game Boy Advance Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 10/24/03
    PlayStation 2 Unlimited SaGa 10/31/03

I have no idea what to make of that list since the you listed a bunch of games two and three times and the dates for a lot of them are wrong. Not to mention I was specifically talking about in the US, since importing Square games on the wonderswan color isn't exactly a feasible endeavor when you don't speak japanese.

All I'm saying is there was a period after Kingdom Hearts where it seemed like very little was coming out from the company. Basically it seemed like all we got was FFXI and FFTactics Advance. It wasn't until Kingdom Hearts II/Advent Children/GBA and DS Final Fantasies that things seemed to pick up steam again.

What's the source of the "13 new FF's" thing? I haven't heard of it yet. Also, I'll give a list because I feel like it:

    On the promo picture:
    Final Fantasy Anniversary Edition (PSP)
Final Fantasy II Anniversary Edition (PSP)
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete (Blu-Ray)
Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis (Mobile)
Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (PSP)
Final Fantasy XI (PS2, PC and 360)
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings (DS)
    Final Fantasy XIII (PS3)
    Final Fantasy Versus XIII (PS3)
    Final Fantasy XIII Agito (Mobile)
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Rings of Fate (DS)
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (Wii)
    Final Fantasy Tactics (PSP)

Announced games that are absent on the promo picture:
Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus: Lost Episode (Mobile)
Final Fantasy Tactics A2: The Sealed Grimoire (DS)

    Rumoured announcements:
    New PSP Final Fantasy
    New FFXIII announcements

Personally, I think that if the PSP rumour is true then it'll be FFVII-IX ports or perhaps a new game using the Crisis Core engine (which itself is a port of the KH2 engine).

Is this the thread where we get to argue about which FF is our favorite and which we hate with the irrational fury of several high-level Gods? 'Cause I haven't done that in a while.

More FF games? Good thing. The more offshoots and cross-platform stuff they put out, the more chance I'll end up playing one in coming years. FFXII didn't click for me. Thought I'd like the combat system. Didn't (X is probably my fav in that respect. Actually felt tactical). So it's nice to have alternatives.

Riding a wave of nostalgia and hype, the FF franchise will always tempt me to part with my hard-earned pennies.

...Although it'd be nice if SquareEnix took the time to port Terranigma to GBA/DS in the mean time. Just saying.

Right so let me get this straight.

Four FF's for the psp - ff1, ff2, crisis core and fft remake
Three FF's for the DS - ffta, ff12rw and ffcc
Three FF's for the mobile phone - Before crisis, FF13 and the vincent game
    Two FF's for the Ps3 - FF13 and... er... vFF13
    One for the ps2 - ffxi add-on
and one for the wii - crystal chronicles

    well i...

holy shit! I just remembered I started playing FF9 again when I was in london. I completely forgot with all the moving and the FF12 coming out and stuff! I was on the last disc!
    damn.

I think the best thing for us Waggle owners is that this poster acknowledges that Crystal Bearers even exists. Seriously, there's been a media blackout on the Wii version of FFCC2 since last E3 and I've been worried that the project was quietly dropped. Great to hear it's still there.

And yes, Tactics A2 is going to the DS. You people are confusing it with the remake of the "proper" FFT (which I would love to see on the DS  )

Another interesting footnote. Just looking at the FF list you'd think that Square is throwing more support behind the PSP than the DS, but all of their other IP is currently being shunted toward the DS. Given this, it'll be interesting to see what's announced at the big shindig. I'm expecting a Wiibomb or a DSbomb myself.

(Of course, as far as PSP development goes I almost don't want to count the ports of FF1 and FF2 since they've already been put on every platform imaginable, but I won't really get into that argument here. :p )

I'm not an FF fan by any stretch of the imagination; I've never beat any FF game. I played a lot of VI, but I never beat it myself because I watched my brother and friend play through it and finish it. I got caught up in the VII hype on release and got to the end, but by then the razzle dazzle had worn off and I had no real desire to level up my characters and finish it once and for all. I think the game gets a rather weak after you leave the city. I still bought VIII when it came out, and I was completely disgusted by it. I absolutely hated everything about it. But I gave it another shot a few months ago and it's really not that bad. If my attention span had held out, I'd probably have beaten it.

Anyway, that's all i have to say about that.

Honestly, I tried to play VIII again about 6 months ago, and the general set up of that game does not jive with me for some reason. Dunno why exactly.

For me, its that over leveling too much will destroy you, but underleveling will only hurt in that you may not get the best of everything. Once I looked over the guide and saw that the monsters leveled with me, I turned the game off in disgust and haven't looked back. I can understand the monsters being a little more difficult, but when the game is assrape hard when you get near level 50, its just not fun for me.

I mean, tactics did it as well, but only for the random encounters. The story missions had the levels of the NPCs set at a specific number and did not vary, so leveling helped in the story, but over leveling before certain equipment became available hurt.

Do you...do you even know who you're quoting? He's somehow ideologically opposed to the GaijinBox. Have you seen the Sakura picture?

I'm hoping FFXIII will turn into a "timed exclusive" and we'll see it on other systems once the exclusivity period expires. I heard SE was already porting the White engine to other systems, so it sounds reasonable. I really hope third-party exclusives are made the exception, rather than the rule, considering they don't serve the interests of the audience at all.

I once made the mistake of making Ramza Godlike in comparison to everyone else in FFT, and it resulted in me being pretty much unable to continue. No one else could survive the battles more than a round or two, and Ramza could not handle 6-10 bad guys on his own when they were almost his equal in terms of power.

Sony: FFXIII PS3 exclusivity under discussion
Sony France executive says in interview that Square Enix's latest installment may not be exclusive to the console after all.
    By Emma Boyes, GameSpot UK
    Posted Mar 22, 2007 6:36 am PT
One more platform-exclusive title may be going multiplatform, it has been revealed. The latest news appears to be that Square Enix's latest epic role-playing game, Final Fantasy XIII, may follow other titles--including Saints Row, Assassin's Creed, and Devil May Cry 4--that have now been announced as appearing on at least one other platform as well.

Sony Computer Entertainment France president Georges Fornay dropped the bombshell in an interview with French-language newspaper Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace (subscription required). He said, "The development costs of games have exploded, and it has become more difficult to have exclusives, outside of our own games. But we have for launch day [in France] 30 games, including MotorStorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Virtua Fighter 5. Moreover, we are expecting 200 games [for the PS3] by the end of 2007... As far as Final Fantasy XIII goes, I can tell you that the exclusivity is in discussion."

Fornay went on to say that he believed that the PS3 would be particularly successful in France, and that there had been approximately 60,000 pre-orders made (compared to 40,000 made for the Xbox 360, and 75,000 for the Wii). France will be getting approximately 150,000 of the one million consoles allocated to PAL regions.

He also answered questions about backwards compatibility for the next-gen console, responding to fears that the console would not support many PS2 titles without the Emotion Engine. Fornay said, "Now, if you ask me whether this was a blow to the launch, I would say that [Sony] would have done better to be sure that the console would be completely backwards compatible before announcing it. But hey, when it becomes clear what the PS3 is capable of, gamers won't really fancy playing PS2 [games] anymore..."

Square Enix had not returned calls to comment as of press time.

This is a bit off topic, but I'm going to say...

If you hated VIII back in the day, it's probably worth giving it a second chance now.

I once made the mistake of leveling ramza and party to level 99 after the second random fight location opened up. Man was the story easy after that, but I had to stop at EVERY point on the map and save as the next random fight was able to destroy me.

Took me a whole summer to do it, but I was a determined little shit.

Nah. It's possible it could hit the 360, but the Wii couldn't even come close to running FFXIII in its' current state, and I can't picture Square starting over at this point.

Of course, as far as PSP development goes I almost don't want to count the ports of FF1 and FF2 since they've already been put on every platform imaginable, but I won't really get into that argument here. :p
are they releasing those seperately, or on a 'Dawn of Souls-esque' double pack?

Seperately, though they'll hopefully price them pretty low.

Oh and can we stop the "FFXIII port to 360" talk? Right now, it's not happening, ok? It could possibly happen in the future but there's no point speculating over nothing at the moment. It just gets stupid and leads to arguments.

Btw, in FFT did white mages get exp for healing allies? I seem to remember that being my biggest (and ignoring the translation, only) complaint about the game, since it's pretty hard to level white mages up.

templewulf: This is all I'll comment on it but there's no evidence (only a rumour) that the White Engine is being ported to the 360. Especially since Square Enix have recently licensed the Unreal Engine for multiplatform development (which begs the question, why would they spend the money on licensing it if they had their own engine?).

Didn't SE license the Unreal 3 engine recently? Maybe this unannounced game has to do with that.

Well there are reportedly at least a couple of games being revealed but a UE3 game isn't going to be revealed. They only licensed the engine a month or two ago and you think they're already far enough through development to show it off? ;-) The unannounced game(s) will undoubtably be DS or PSP games. One of which is being released this year.

Yeah, they got exp for healing. Infact, theres a leveling trick you can do where you put a monk in the center of a 5 person cross, and have your team mates do their weakest attack to your monk and afterwards, you heal with the monk by using his skill (can't remember the name). Every body will get 10 exp and 20 jexp (you have jexp plus, right?) per round guaranteed. Every 10 turns everyone gains a level, and after 50 turns or so, the monsters on that level will do either 1 or 0 damage to you. After a 1000 turns, all 5 of your team are now level 99.

I'm sorry, but the random encounters in FF8 were just not hard. Level-ups were largely unimportant, as like you said the enemies levelled with you. Instead you got more and more powerful spells and gfs and junctioned your stats and boosted your stats like crazy. The FF8 battle system can become totally unbalanced if you know how to use it.

Also, get Zell, get him hurt down to yellow. batter the switch character button a lot. when he gets his limit, press:

    10 left, right.
    20 x o.
    30 goto 10

I once managed at 35 hit combo using this.

The only battles I remember struggling with were the last boss and omega weapon.
I mean come on, the game has an item that MAKES YOU INVULNERABLE.

Through careful use of the card system (while bored) I managed to beat ifrit in one hit. It's THAT broken.

Oh, I know, I kept everyone down near level 20 once, got all the best spells on the Heaven island (or was it hell, can't remember) and kept everyone in yellow helalth. The fact that at level 20 with the right junctioned spells, I had my party with 9999 HP and doing 9999 damage just made me feel dirty.

    Hey Katchem:

Why was Final Fantasy 6 afraid of Final Fantasy 7?
    Because 7 ... ruined the series! buh-dum-dum-tsh

Seriously, though. That is a lot of Final Fantasy games. Revanent Wings looks good, and the rest I either don't care about or are on a system I don't own and don't plan on buying until they are cheap.
