Oh how I miss those cardboard sleeves! Planescape, Fallout 1 and 2, and a few other classics are in my library because of those wonderful things. Nowadays it seems like the only thing I have at my Best Buy are the newest games, and Gamestop's PC collection, which has been shrinking for years, is now downright pitiful.
I thank Steam and serve the Newell with vigor for saving my PC and allowing me the chance to play awesome games easily.

Years...for years I've been searching for a Dungeon Keeper. I've played Dungeons which is cool, however NOT Dungeon Keeper, I've played Evil Genius which is awesome, but not quite Dungeon Keeper-y enough for me, there's another game that I'm forgetting now that disappointed me. Now, after all my searching, finally! hearing about the bugs, though, it's troubling. I'm very tolerant when it comes to bugs (despite people hating it, I thought Towns was a fantastic game and love it and am still playing it), so depending on what your appetite for bugginess is maybe it's not quite worth the price. To me, though...yeah, heaven.
Me too...unfortunately, I'm not sure Impire is it. I'll try and give it some more play time tonight if I can but two things stick out as being major departures from the Evil Genius/Dungeon Keeper style of game: First, rooms are built via patterns. You don't dig out a room and then 'tag' it as a nursery, or chicken coop like you would in DK. Instead, you pick the room pattern from the list, which has the same exits and is the same shape each time, and plop it down, so no crazy room/dungeon design for you!. Secondly, your minions are directly selectable as groups and controllable. It's led me to conclude that this isn't a 'god game', it's just a RTS with a dungeon skin, the rooms are your buildings, and the minions are your units.
Is the other game you forgot called Startopia? If not, you should give it a go. It is many years old now but lots of fun.
It definitely does take some departures away from Dungeon Keeper, it's just more in line with that golden game than others I have played. I haven't checked out Startopia,I'm going to go see it once I get home. The wallet's in an unfortunate lockdown for the next couple of months so I'm getting nothing other than, maybe, Nintendoland and definitely Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate, but I will eventually stabilize...I hope!
Startopia's from 2001 and is made by ex-Bullfrog Employees at Muckyfoot. The same guys who did Dungeon Keeper. It might be tough to find these days but still is pretty fun. It plays the same as dungeon keeper (you have an isometric view, you build things and give general orders but don't have direct control over your units, have worker bots, etc). It takes place on several space stations, some of which are contested. You build attractions and stuff to attract visiting aliens to stay. You can then give some of those aliens jobs, like janitor, doctor, and security.

And it's on GoG!
Sweet, missed your first post. I bought it like 8 years ago along with DK 1 and 2 from like a shopper's drug mart or Blockbuster here in Ontario. They used to have these rotating display cases where they'd put up old games in those cardboard sleeves for like $5. It would always be stuff like Battle Chess, or 100 games of solitaire. Then one day I saw all the Bullfrog and Muckyfoot games. Grabbed em!
If you haven't, take a look at GoG. They also have both DK games as well as Battle Chess.

I must remember to get in on the PA groups. There are games out there that I regularly multiplay and I'm getting a little bit tired of just straight-up PuGing them. The games are somewhat obscure, but hopefully with enough PA folks in my community lists I'll be able to find at least some. I'm speaking of Killing Floor, Red Orchestra (both 1 and 2), and then maybe some less-obscure titles like L4D2, TF2, Borderlands 2, and Torchlight 2. Although, I"m guessing nobody here would want to play Torchlight 2 with me, considering I'm fairly certain I'm labeled as a "cheater" due to my unabashed use of the "resetskills" command.

For L4D2, as well as others on the occasion like Chivalry and whatever our group fancies playing at the time: Armadeaddon, which is associated to the forum and its other steam groups mostly by the members involved even though we don't have "Penny Arcade" written anywhere on the page.

Now you just have to play it 4 more times to get all the endings!

Personally, I just did my first run of it. Ended up being a master of blue and black magic, a good friend to many, and failing totally at romance. Friendzoned the blue dude pretty hard, too.
(Attention: super-spoilers)
And then after beating the game I decided to try and see what happened if you actually took pity on his sob story after friendzoning him and sacrifice yourself for him. The conclusion had me laughing darkly. If this isn't an intentional shot at all the Twilight-alikes, the serendipity is amazing.
Take note, girls: sometimes, what everyone else says is right and they're not just being jealous and close-minded. Sometimes the dark and handsome misunderstood bishounen who everyone else says is bad news but who swears you're his first true love, IS in fact bad news and everyone else was perfectly right about him. Surprise!

If there's any critisism I have about the game it's this. This is all you need to do to get through the exams. Blue, black, and enough white to be able to talk to things.
When activating keys in Steam does anyone know what triggers it to attempt to start installing the game? Like most of the time after redeeming a key it starts the whole install thing telling you how much space the game is going to consume that I end up canceling out of most of the time. But with that X-Com key it just redeemed it and just had a finish button and didn't do that.

I had that happen a few times on games when I bought them. One drove me nuts because I bought the game, it wouldn't download, wouldn't show up in my library, and when I went to the store page it still had the "purchase" button in green. A restart of Steam fixed that issue though.

Funny comment! All I needed is Red, plus 20 in White+Blue for that one event. I never once used Black.

Well, yeah. Red and black CAN do similar things with doors, but the problem with red for me is that it's MP hungry, and to use it effectively, you ALSO have to have high strength, which means you cant focus on anything else, when it's better to have more of a balance.

Wait, from reading on it, it sounds like one of them Japanese Dating Simulators that I used to play way way WAY back in the day. You guys saying there's more to it? (Can't really do much other than wikipedia due to work filters)
I am not a fan of adventure games, except for Myst and Zork way back in the day.

If you get it high enough nothing can kill you before you kill it, even if you keep health at 20. The rest of the problems you can solve by blasting and pushing. You do need a fairly large MP pool though.

It's mostly that, but there are dungeon exams, which while small are kinda first person dungeon crawlers with some puzzles. They are rather small though.
I hold TotalBisbuit's opinion very low. I've watched his let's plays and he assumes way too much about what he's playing. And when he doesn't understand it or the system fails to be what he assumed it was, he calls it broken.
Yes, but he's British, so he sounds smart. Basically the Piers Morgan of gaming.

Ah, I might check it out at some point. I'm mentally scarred, though, because the last time I played one of them Dating Sims, it was good at first, and then, at the end became a Hentai...that was NOT something that I wanted. I understand that this game won't do that, but the scars, man! They burn!

That kinda brings me to another problem. Balance on spells is kinda all over the place. Blue is useful in every situation, red too. Black and white are more specific, but have their uses, and I still have yet to find a use for green.
Plus, from what you're saying, there is never a need to go to gym class, so strength is kinda useless as well.
My first playthrough of Magical Diary (yes, I'm on the second) I went mostly blue with a touch of green and white just because. Did fine on the tests but failed the final (whoops). Still, everything turned out okay in the end.
And blue guy was left to die like he probably deserved. :P
I might see how it works out if I focus on white and black to the exclusion of everything else.
Green is really good too. The only useless school seems to be white. I thought Black sucked but apparently it does not.
Strength is only useless if this is your red magic girl by the end of the year:

Spoiler: He's bullshitting you. If you accept to give him your soul, once you've "signed" he basically has a huge laugh about how he totally should have tried the pity party shit much sooner and that you're such a sap. I don't think he ever really had a risk to die

Hrm. My alphabet is much closer to completion than I suspected. I only need I, Q, and Y. I will have to go poke around and see what games start with those letters which might be interesting.

Iron Brigade, Quantum Conundrum, and according to this thread: Ys games. (Those I haven't played.)
Y: Yes, the Ys games look like the direction to go.
Q: I am in a quandary. Quantum Conundrum and Quake are all I can come up with and neither looks particularly interesting, so I'd end up getting a game just to fill a slot.
I: Ironically, I had two copies each of Iron Brigade and Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet... and gave them all away, hehe.
So Iron Brigade just bugged out on me. No more waves were happening and the mission wasn't ending. I had enough trouble getting the game to recognize my controller, but I'm sure I'll go back to it in a little bit.
