    Ah bless you.
    So what's with points?

I figured it would have at least smething to do with your work units but some people on the PA page have more points with less work units and vice versa - though its pretty consistent.

From what I understand, different Work Units have varying difficulty. Some are a couple hundred frames, others are several thousand.

Edit: Just to be sure I set this up properly (using the guide from page 5): is it okay for the two separate instances to be working on the same protein?

Yes, they actually need lots of results for the same proteins -- you'll get full points for repeats, don't worry.

Finally made it to number 9. Getting higher however isnt possible I reckon, seeing as I have only my PS3 running this, granted almost nonstop, but still ;) .

Although once I get Oblivion it probably wont be running so much.....hmmm guess ill have to buy ANOTHER PS3 and have it run nonstop so I dont lose rank :P.

Last night I added my ATI x1800 into the mix. Downloaded the new Vista ATI drivers and it mentioned that the GPU folding client now supported chips all the way down to the X1600 so I thought, why not try it? Running pretty smooth, though it remains to be seen whether or not this helps me in the long run. :)

Clayburn, I feel your pain. I almost don't want to play Oblivion on my PS3 now that it's folding. With the computer going as well, I can feel a little bit better about it.

This inspired me, and I have created a gift for the team. I even bought the correct font, to make it as authentic as possible. The original strip just jumped into my mind, and it's perfect.

Over 250,0000 PS3 systems have registered for the [email protected] program since its launch in March, delivering nearly 400 teraflops of computing power at any given moment, more than doubling the pre-PlayStation power output.

Today Sony has announced their continuing support with an update set to go live tomorrow that will increase folding speeds, improve the user location display on the map, and allow for longer names for teams and individual donors.

The folks at Stanford are ecstatic:

"The PS3 turnout has been amazing, greatly exceeding our expectations and allowing us to push our work dramatically forward," said Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and [email protected] program lead. "Thanks to PS3, we have performed simulations in the first few weeks that would normally take us more than a year to calculate. We are now gearing up for new simulations that will continue our current studies of Alzheimer's and other diseases."

It's amazing what our consoles can accomplish when we aren't playing them. I just hope they aren't counting on this kind of output on a regular basis. Once the Metal Gear Solids and Final Fantasies start coming out I get the odd feeling the PS3 [email protected] project contributions will be a great deal less terafloppy. Yes it's a word. Michael Fahey

PlayStation®3 Users Significantly Contribute To The [email protected] Program

Tokyo, April 25, 2007 - Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced that great progress has been made in the one month since PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment systems became part of Stanford University's [email protected]™ program, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding and related diseases. Since the program launched in March, participation by the PS3 user community has been phenomenal, providing [email protected] with immense computing power that is helping to fast forward its research. Furthermore, thanks to PS3's powerful Cell Broadband Engine™ (Cell/B.E.), the [email protected] program has become one of the most powerful distributed computing networks in the world and is quickly approaching a level of computing power that is of historical proportions.

Exhibiting its continued commitment to the program, SCE also announced that starting tomorrow, it is providing a [email protected] application update that will further enhance the user experience. The updated software features an improvement in folding calculation speeds, increased visibility of user location (*1) on the globe and the ability for users to create longer donor or team names.

Some of the key accomplishments made since the [email protected] program launched on PS3 include:

    · More than 250,000 unique PS3 users have registered to the program in just one month.

    · PS3 users are delivering nearly 400 teraflops, achieving a total computing power of over 700 teraflops at a single moment. This is more than double the computing capacity of the network before PS3 joined the program (*2)

    · The "halo-effect" of PS3 has been evident as the number of active PCs has increased by 20 percent in the last month.

"We continue to be thrilled with the ongoing contributions of the PS3 user community in helping the [email protected] program study the causes of many different diseases that afflict our society," said Masayuki Chatani, Corporate Executive and CTO Computer, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "As we move forward, we are issuing a call to action for all PS3 owners around the world to download the [email protected] application and help this cause. These PS3 fans can also be part of history as the [email protected] distributed computing program inches closer to achieving a petaflop - a measure of computing power that has never before been reached."

PS3 users can download the new update version 1.1 by restarting the [email protected] application. New [email protected] users can join the program by simply clicking on the [email protected] icon within the Network menu of the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) or can optionally set the application to run automatically whenever the PS3 is idle (*3).

Starting with [email protected], SCE will continue to support distributed computing projects in a wide variety of academic fields such as medical and social sciences and environmental studies through the use of PS3 and hopes to contribute to the advancement of science.

I have to say, someone needs to get this info out to all the Sony naysayers. It is really cool of SCE to be putting time into this. Even if they are doing it for selfish reasons (to sell more units), it's something no one else is bothering with. And to see gamers making so much of an impact is really cool! Can't wait till I get my PS3!

Hmm, my reaction was based on the assumption that it must not have been available before. Thus, having it available now would be a huge deal to PS3 owners. If it's been available all along then, yeah, I guess it's not very exciting.

The Wii folds the slowest of the three, but you get to fold using its innovative, real-time, fold-porteins-using-the-Wiimote control scheme.

Yeah... if I am not mistaken, if you hit triangle when you are on the [email protected] icon, it should bring up that side bar where you can set it to how long it should be idle before it starts. I think its something like 10 mins, 20 mins, 30 mins, etc.
