XBOX 360 or PS2. A dilema.

To make a long story short my local video game shop , has an offer for an XBOX360 Premium + Kameo + PGR for 320 Euros. Now I find that to be a most awsome deal.

They also have the PS2 slim with Gran Tourismo + Tourist Trophy for 150 Euros.

Now what should I do? On the one hand you have the PS2 with it's MASSIVE collection of games that I haven't played starting from Final Fantasies , God of War , MGS , Kingdom Hearts blah blah the list is neverending. Also most of these games are bargei priced by know.

On the other hand you have a pretty decent offer on a state of the art console. And when I see things like Trusty Bell I almost pee in my pants a little.

Also it might be usefull to note that I have a 17" LCD and a 25" normal cheapo TV ( hey I am a student). Would the XBOX360 be a stupid thing to get? Will the PS2 keep me happy?

Or should I just buy some women?

I'd suggest the PS2, considering the massive amount of cheap games and your tv setup. You said yourself that you're a student, and the PS2 library will allow you to stretch your dollar. Er, euro. Whatever.

I'm not a big fan of Gran Turismo, though the PS2 does have an excellent RPG library and some nice actiony exclusives like God of War I and II.

Otherwise, the Xbox 360 is pretty damn good nowadays.

Personally, I would get the PS2 (I don't have on yet). You get huge collection of cheap games, and so can save some money (as a student you have better things to be spending it on anyhow).

Then, by the time you have tired of the PS2 the 360 will probably have dropped another $50-100 anyway. Or that black one may actually come out replacing the premium.

I'm doing this with the Xbox 1 at the mo - and I'm loving it.

Xbox 360 has some insanely good games out already.

Not to mention 2007 is going to get even better.

The PS2 does have a huge ass collection, but the 360 has like a refined quality to its game selection. There are some really big AAA titles on the way and out already.

Plus, if you're a student, Friday night post-pub chainsaw only matches on Gears are literally the best thing in the world ever.

PS2. It's a dumptruck full of games vs a shopping cart full.

The 360 won't look bad on a crappy TV, you just won't be using it to its full potential. That said, I would recommend a PS2 if you are strapped for cash. The amount of cheap games is ridiculous. There are serious advantages to living in a previous generation of games. Unfortunately, I do not have the willpower to take advantage of this :P

That's actually a much tougher question than it first appears. Personal opinions of Sony aside, I must concede that the Playstation 2 has one of the greatest libraries of any game console ever. On the other hand, I think the Xbox 360 is destined to be the future of the video game industry.

It's up to you, man. If you don't demand bleeding-edge graphics from your games, I'd say save the hundred quid and grab yourself a PS2. If you don't have an HDTV, definitely buy the PS2 first. The Xbox 360 is bound to drop in price over the next four or five years, and will have a much stronger software library by then (not to mention a cooler running processor).

But with some 2nd hand shopping....

    £(PS2 + Guitar Hero + Beer + FFs + Rez + God of Wars + Gran T + Psychonauts + Katamari Damaci + Grand Theft Auto ) < £(360 Kameo + PGR + Gears + Guitar Hero)

I'm not saying don't get a 360 - I plan too eventually. I just say - why now? Awesome games will still be awesome in a year - and they won't cost £50 rrp anymore.

The correct answer is dont buy either and get a Dreamcast instead.

Picked up mine today (my old one broke years ago) and it is so fucking good. Quake 3 and Skies of arcadia on the dreamcast are like the 2 best games I have ever played.

For the current situation I'd throw a nod to the PS2. I've been neglecting both my 360 and my PS3 games for God of War 1/2 and FF12 over the past few weeks. Then I realized I haven't played Rachet and Clank in ages... and... it's all going to hell very quickly :)

    yes

Put the money to one side, save up a bit, wait for a 360 price drop, then get one, a DC is a great temporary substitute for a PS2.

Yeah I was looking over the games for PS2 and there are atleast 12 that I would love play. And that is without really searching. So I guess it's PS2 for me! Though I still dislike Sony.

I must also say that I did have a Dreamcast.

Yeah, I haven't touched my 360 since the 16th because of God of War, God Hand, and Rogue Galaxy. I gotta say, I haven't been overwhelmed by the quality of games on the 360. I haven't played anything that comes close to the great gaming I've had on my PS2. Though the latter half of 2007 is looking to fix that.

I think this is the point.

Get a PS2 now and know that no game is going to come out again that is better than God of War 2. I'd call that a nice bookend to the whole system.

Or get a 360 which may not have the huge library of the Ps2 but has 3-4 years ahead of it, plus some insanely good releases this fall, GTA4, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock, MGS4 (lol kidding)

But seriously. All up to taste.

Personally, I would go for the 360 if I was in your position. It has more future. I dont like the idea that if you buy a PS2 now you know that is what you get. There is no surprises on the horizon, nothing to look forward too. In one way that is good, as you can value your purchase easily, and the amount of games you could get is a lot. On the other hand, its a little restrictive.

    ooh, hang on, do you have any plans to ever get a PS3? because a 360 + a ps3 is better than a PS2 and a PS3?

There are a few more good releases coming up for the PS2. There's the 2nd and 3rd .hack//G.U. games, as well as Odin Sphere. But that's not the best reason for buying a PS2. As we said, it's the backlog. He has tons and tons of games he could buy, all for much less than $60. And yeah, the 360 is going to kick more and more ass. And the games aren't going anywhere.

Yeah. Dont get a PS2 if you eventually want a PS3.

All this bullshit about the backwards compatibility will get blown over when it is sorted to 100 or close enough percent. Making your PS2 purchase irrelevant.

If the money isn't a problem and you like high-tech shit I say go with the 360. Plenty of games worth picking up now (Gears of War, Dead Rising, etc.), and a lot of great exclusives coming later this year like Mass Effect, Halo 3, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey PGR4, Forza 2, Bioshock, Eternal Sonata, Alan Wake, etc.

If it aids your decision any, Tourist Trophy really isn't half the game it should be. Literally. It's like a freaking demo. It's structured like that hideous Gran Turismo concept stopgap in between GT3 and GT4, you don't earn cash to buy new bikes, you have to unlock what bikes there are by passing license-like tests. And you've seen all the courses before if you've played GT.

I don't know the regular price for 360 there, but that sounds like a great deal on a system that has some great games, and will have a shitload more in the future. I'd personally go with the 360.

that pretty much sums it up, you can count the good titles on the 360 right now on one hand, but there must be like at least a 100 steller ps2(or if you havn't played ps1 much much more) games, plus it's WAY easier on the wallet.

PS2 hands down. The library of just the most top-notch games alone will keep you busy for months, and they're all super cheap. Say what you will about Sony, but the PS2 had its position for a reason. No self-respecting console gamer should be without one by now. The 360 has some really solid games but it's still early in its life, just like the rest of this gen's consoles. Last gen will always be a better return on your investment.

If you're saying there are at least 100 ps2 games that are 'stellar' (not even to mention "Worth Playing") you can probably count at least 10 xbox 360 games that are 'stellar'. (+ backwards compatible titles).

You're a college student. Money is likely a bit hard to come by. So go for the PS2, since it has the most value for the buck by far with its huge backlog of (mostly cheap) awesome games.

The 360 has good stuff now, but it'll have even better stuff on down the road, plus be cheaper. The PS2 backlog will last you at least a year and a half.

As a student who can't really afford any new systems (and won't for a long time) I'm seeing the PS2 as my savior. I've owned the PS2 since release day, but there's still so many games I haven't touched that it's backlog will keep me busy for years.

So the way I see it, you can save tons of money and still get an amazing library of games. Go with the PS2. X-Box 360 will be around for many more years, and it's library will only grow (and get cheaper) by that point.
