    whoops clarification:

what the hell no 3X pedal releases this week? RBN authors don't care about metal

Also, lots of folks are disappointed that Chevelle gets this week's DLC. They really, really thought it would somehow be some fantabulous choice.

They're a popular band from the early aughts, it's actually surprising they didn't get DLC sooner.

The loss of the Pearl Jam game is the only one that really makes me sad. I would have loved that game so much. When they first announced it and opened up voting for which version of each song could be included I voted nearly every day for MONTHS.

I'm not misremembering that we got a X Japan song, right? It's the only reason why the death of Rock Band Japan was soften for me. It gave me a false hope that we'd get stuff from the East.

I was talking to a friend about this but I honestly can't count the way this franchise has influenced me since it convinced me to buy a 360 oh so long ago. The time and money I put into it is greatly overshadowed by the people I got to meet through it, the music I discovered and basically being a great ice breaker in getting people to drop down their social shields and fucking have fun.

That's absolutely true for a lot of us, I know for me it is.

I like Send the Pain Below, it reminds me a lot of Deftones.

Yeah, it was a system seller for me (and I shudder to think at how much I've spent on it), but I used it as an icebreaker for a lot of stuff, brought it to work for "family fun days" and teambuilding exercises, etc.

    Noice

Also weighted keys are a bitch to deal with faster songs. I think I should probably recalibrate when playing via midi

    Funny thing about weighted keys...
They're suppose to help a synth simulate a real piano by having the keys require a different sensitivity going up the scale, however, on a decent, actual piano, all keys would have the same weight regardless.

This is a long shot, but does anyone remember the RB3 era song that had an absurd amount of piano slides in it? I think they were charted to horns or sax or something like that.

Whoa. So that happened. Thanks to everyone that was able to come out to the panel! It was a damn near fully packed theater and we got a ton of thank yous over the weekend from people that attended who learned something about licensing or finally had a long standing question answered. It seems like the people that were there had a blast, with lots of gasps, laughs, oohs and ahhs, and much appreciated applause.

Now that we're back from PAX East we're going to try to meet with Legal and the Music Ops team to see what, if anything, we're able to share with the community at large. Telling stories in a room full of people is one thing, but hosting them online as a permanent resource is something else entirely. We had to ask that people in the room not record or take photos and nearly everyone has been super respectful of that, which we appreciate immensely. We're not being tight lipped to be jerks, but rather because music licensing and maintaining those relationships is so complicated that we don't want to put anyone's nose out of joint.

We have a number of slides, several videos, screen mock ups, and proof of concept work, but right now it's unclear what we'll be able to share permanently. We hope to at least have a transcription of the panel hosted to help provide some additional context for the IGN story and address any misconceptions resulting from the inevitable "heard it from a friend of a friend of a guy at the panel" game of telephone.

I'll see about diving into this thread to reply to some questions later in the week too.

So. Keys support in RBHP. That's going to be a thing (with two caveats -- no animations, uses backing audio).

Got it finally working right last night.

What if it is the main audio like "Smokin'"? :P Would you just replicate the guitar's track for keys?

  • FyreWulffFyreWulff YouRegistered User, ClubPA regular
I think he meant the backing track only can be used, the track where they put everything else.

So upside - if a song had keys in the general mix, it'll work very well. In other songs... I guess you'll have to live with certain other instruments suddenly cutting out

  • espherespher NB, CanadaRegistered User regular
    edited March 2013
    Yeah, I'll elaborate here rq.

RB's mogg format has a bunch of channels in it. Generally 1-5 for the drums, and 1-2 for each of the other instruments (depending on whether the source audio is stereo or mono). There are also 2-4 other tracks with each mogg, which are the backing audio stereo channels and the crowd sing-a-long (if applicable). As far as I can tell (through testing), you can't use a track a second time, nor can you just not assign a track -- these cause the game to freeze during the song load animation. So if we want to put keys in the mix, we have to take one of the tracks that remains, and live with it cutting out on a miss. One option is to grab one of the two stereo channels (so that it only "half" cuts out), but that sounded kind of awful in my limited testing, so I'd rather grab the entire backing audio track. It's an unfortunate limitation and one I would absolutely LOVE to get around.

If we did keys for Smokin', we'd likely just grab whatever is in the backing track (I'd have to listen to know for sure), though the chart would be a duplicate of the guitar part (which is playing the organ section). Of course, I could release a variant where the guitar plays the riff in the background and the keys play the organ, but that's not going to impact how the audio appears, AND it has a scoring impact on the guitar leaderboards, so I'd really only entertain it if there seemed to be acceptance for the inaccuracy of the leaderboards (the upcoming, revised distribution method does have support for 'fixes' and variant charts, of course, but whether or not I release them is another story).

'tis a fickle process, and for the longest time we were sitting at "you'll have to lose one difficulty of pro keys because the game just refuses to read the top-ordered track in the .mid", but we got that one, so who knows? Maybe we'll find a way around this one. ;)

I'd probably stick to just touching keys. Your project has done a pretty good job so far of being respectful of the existing playerbase by not effecting their scores, so I wouldn't draw Harmonix's ire by changing guitar charts for possible higher scores.

Yeah, that's mainly the plan, but the infrastructure is there to start rolling out fixes/variants should the leaderboard plug eventually get pulled. ;)

So apparently HMX decided to dump a whole bunch of RBN tracks onto the PS3 this week since there won't be any more.
Jerry Lee Lewis - “Great Balls of Fire” ($1.99), Rock, OffbeatEntertainment
Children of Nova - “Impossible Landscape” ($1.99), Prog, RockGamer
Dance for the Dying - “Ordinary Objects” ($0.99), Pop-Rock, pksage
Ava Inferi - “The Living End” ($1.99), Metal, Season-of-Mist
The Dillinger Escape Plan - “Parasitic Twins” ($1.99), Metal, Season-of-Mist

TesseracT - “Deception - Concealing Fate Part Two (2x Bass Pedal)” ($1.99), Prog, CenturyMediaRecords
Attack Attack! - “Last Breath (2x Bass Pedal)” ($1.99), Metal, Riserecords
A Day to Remember - “All Signs Point to Lauderdale (2x Bass Pedal)” ($1.99), Rock, Victory
A Day to Remember - “2nd Sucks (2x Bass Pedal)” ($1.99), Rock, Victory
August Burns Red - “Internal Cannon (2x Bass Pedal)” ($1.99), Metal, TheAuthority

And it amuses me to note that PS3 owners can now never, ever unlock the RBN Raps goal.

It's that time: today is the last announcement for weekly Rock Band DLC releases. After 281 consecutive weeks, this is the last weekly DLC we have on the schedule.

For what it's worth, Harmonix has stated that American Pie was originally going to come out on the 5-year Anniversary Week of DLC, but was moved once they knew they had an end date.

I think I played too much Rock Band over the years.

Whenever a song pops up on my iPhone or the radio that I own I start having flashbacks to the game. Not the charts, but the character actions like the bassist and guitarist doing harmonies in "We Care A Lot", the singer's headbob (in general), or the various camera angles when a sick drum roll starts.
