True, not off-putting. But not good either.

As a fellow Sonic 06 100%er, this is super fun to watch.

The hardest part I remember is the Silver Medal collecting. They put those fucking things in the mach speed sections.

I'll never understand the fanwank nostalgia for Sonic Adventure & Sonic Adventure 2. They were terrible games then and they certainly haven't aged well.

It's kind of funny to hear people asking for a SA3, when I still remember the consensus being that SA & SA2 were bad. Strange how time and context cause the consensus to change so drastically.

I like the actual 3D Sonic stuff in the SA games (Sonic/Tails in SA, Sonic/Shadow in SA2). Problem was that it only made up 1/3 of their respective games.

They were passable at the time because they were the first 3D Sonic games, but as time went on, the novelty wore off and you could just see how bad they were.

Fun at the time. If the re-releases had fixed anything, they would probably still be well considered, like Banjo Kazooie or whatever. But no, they got far worse. So no thank ya.

I liked Sonic Adventure then and now.

Loved SA2 Battle, save for a few parts, but the controls felt off on the HD version, so I skipped that on 360.

I think people forget that Sonic Adventure 1 came out in '99. It feels like a more modern game than that, which makes it's technical flaws much more noticeable, but when you compare it to other games from the same time (except for the highly polished N64 stuff) it's not that bad.

Now, non-technical flaws are personal taste. I don't mind the non-Sonic stuff in SA1/2 because I personally don't think the Sonic stuff was that much better. None of it really felt anything like 2D Sonic to me. 2D Sonic was a platformer with multiple paths and speed sections. IMO the reason 3D Sonic has never gotten AS good as the originals is because they all focus on providing a roller coaster experience with little to no choices in what to do. (I haven't played a ton of the new stuff, so feel free to disagree with me on that.)

Of course, 3D Sonic has been around long enough that I just saw a review posted on Reddit of the original Sonic by a kid who grew up with the 3D ones. He tried to play it like a modern constant speed roller coaster Sonic and hated it. He didn't understand that always going fast was bad.

I think that SA was a great game at the time. The problem was that Sega thought they were done and never bothered to fix all the terrible things in it, like the horrible physics and camera.

They actually spent something like 8 months improving all that stuff after the Japanese release for the North American version. Could you imagine how much worse the first version was? They even released a second edition in Japan because it was that much more improved.

I absolutely agree. The Sonic Adventure titles were way too linear.

But the solution to this is Sonic Colors. Arguably the best polygonal Sonic the Hedgehog game yet.

Yeah, Colours and Generations are perfect Sonic games. I love the Modern gameplay style, it works on a different plane than the Classic gameplay, where the challenge is to not die and make it to the end ASAP. Modern's is about looking cool while doing it. The skill gradient ranges from following the prompts as best you can and getting to the end, to doing shit like this

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEg9-BP6vLw

I can understand the complaints though. At this level it's less a platformer, more of a rhythm n' reflex game. :P

I didn't really care for Sonic Generations and I feel like a bit of a crazy person for being the odd man out on it, judging by internet reactions.

The modern Sonic stuff was okay, but the classic Sonic stuff felt took clunky because they tried to emulate the feel of the old games and failed miserably, so in my opinion half of the game is not very enjoyable. Then they padded out the game with a bunch of silly "Mission" or "Challenge" stuff (I forget the exact name of.)

I think maybe the love of the game from the internet probably comes from it being released on PC, as I've noted a similar reaction to All-Stars Racing Transformed.

I really enjoyed the modern sections of Generations (which was a surprise because I couldn't get into Colors) but I didn't like the classic sections at all. They didn't feel anything like the classic games. I preferred even Sonic 4 to them.

The Adventure games I love to bits regardless of their flaws.

I enjoyed the PC demo of Generations, but that might be partly because I only downloaded it to try out the 3D on my TV.

    I hate the 3DS Generations.

Yeah, the 3DS Generations title is pretty terrible. Even Lost World 3DS didn't turn out very good, unfortunately.

Which is really weird, because in general portable Sonic titles have been pretty decent over the last decade. The Advance series ranged from okay to good, and the same goes for the Rush series (of which I'm including Sonic Colors DS as "Sonic Rush 3".
