Is it just me or has there been precious little hype for this game? It comes out next week.
Insofar as I know, the Wii U version's first demo got panned, and got a basically identical reaction the next time it was exhibited. With Sega apparently moving further and further away from Sonic Generations with each sequel (with Lost World being a particular low point-- even my Sonic fanboy heart registered it as kind of cloyingly mediocre), we're at a point where the alleged "Sonic Cycle" doesn't even have a "hype phase". It's basically "Oh, yeah, there's a Sonic game coming out. Think it'll get above a 5 from anyone?"
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

Lost Worlds was the first game since Generations, so it's not like there's been some kind steady decline or anything.
Making a Generations-style game is expensive and that's why Generations lasted for maybe three hours (and that includes some padding). Lost Worlds was an experiment in trying to find a style of gameplay that both worked and was economic. The experiment clearly didn't work, but I don't think it was a complete disaster, and I'm glad they're trying new things instead of resting on their laurels.
It's also worth noting that Boom isn't even a mainline Sonic game: Sonic Team is working on something else entirely, and Boom is more of a gaiden title like the two story book games on the Wii.
I've personally never really enjoyed any of the post-Dreamcast Sonic games and even then those games have not aged well at all. (I even liked Sonic R, but I don't bring that up in polite company.)
I think Boom is heading in the right direction. The farther they get away from what people think of as a "Sonic game" the better.
Boom looks interesting enough. It looks different! Which is nice.
There's a good game within sonic lost world. I like that they're using the first world as a basis for smash because those levels are genuinely really good.

From what I've heard, more people enjoyed the 3DS version than the Wii U version. Not surprising since the Wii U version seems to be straying very far from the traditional Sonic formula.

I have to say that I'm quite looking forward to the show itself. Kids shows these days have been knocking it out of the park these days, and this one looks like it's going to be a lot of fun.

Every video Ive seen of the 3DS version looks like fun to play sonic/metroid hybrid and the wiiu version looks like a chore with stupid co-op focused levels and that dumb laser rope gimmick
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
What is this "Sonic Extreme" that I've been hearing about recently?
It was going to be Sonic's debut on the Saturn, but some issues led to it being canned and Sonic basically skipping the Saturn (unless you count 3D Blast). If you go on YouTube you can find a bunch of very early builds of the game.

Yeh, it was gonna use a fish eye lens and it looked just awful. There was a little resurgence of interest in recent years cause a guy discovered he had an early build in his possession and posted it online for people to dissect.
Long story short: it got fucked over by the Japanese executives (just like they started fucking over Sega of America from midway in the Genesis' life through to the Dreamcast, sadly).

I have impressions of the Wii U version up now as well. Long story short: I liked it. Didn't blow me away or anything, but I had fun with it.

The 3DS demo is... weird. The controls are a lot more technical than I'm used to in most platformers; there are situations where you have to press B to jump, A to swing, X to air dash, and then hold Y to run in the space of about two seconds. The physics are dialed back to make such maneuvers easier; there's almost no momentum and it doesn't feel... smooth? For lack of a better term. Not flow-y. It wants you to slow down. It's a methodical game with running sometimes.
The main stage in the demo is also huge; the speed running medal time is six-something minutes, and it took me twenty just going along collecting things. It's not really an open or metroidy level; it's linear with occasional cul-de-sacs and short side routes.
I don't know that it'll be a bad game, but it doesn't really feel like a Sonic game at all.
It does have pretty great grappling hook physics, though. If I knew that the whole thing would be centered around playing with the grappling hook, I would be really excited.

Probably not. The instant I stopped treating it like a Sonic game and just treating it like a new game is when it clicked, and when Sonic elements did surface... I guess it sort of felt like a nod or throwback to it?
Sort of like how swinging on the EnerBeam is "Oh, this is sort of like Bionic Commando," so too are the speed boosts, loops, and homing attacks sort of "Oh, this is sort of like Sonic."

I managed to catch it, and thankfully some Sonic fans have managed to grab it and upload it to YouTube. It was actually pretty good! Excited to see where they take it in the future.

Just watched it, it was alright. A couple of chuckles here and there, not expecting much though, it is a show for kids. Could be great depending on where they take it.
Watched it until Amy started talking. That twitter post wasn't kidding.

Show was cute. Robotnik stole the fucking show though. Calling out his robots for being soulless, not naming his robots to fit their abilities and asking everyone to get Amy away from him. Sonic was good in a snarky cock-sure way, trying to do everything tired was pretty funny.
It's a cute show, I was not expecting much but I did not mind it. 2nd episode was definitely better than the first by a large margin.
New Sonic X-treme footage from a recent find. If this is the same find I'm aware, it was found about two weeks ago but its taken this long to build a compatible computer and start compiling data.
I played the 3DS demo for Sonic Boom. It looks alright. I'm a little miffed that they gave all characters the Homing Attack, instead of making that Sonic's thing, but eh.

Huh! That actually looks... not half bad. Given it was developed alongside Sonic 3D Boom, it looks miles ahead of that. Almost got like a Mario Galaxy/Lost World vibe to it.

Incidentally, I just played that level in Sonic Adventure 2 XBLA version. This game does not hold up at all, but I still love it.

Strangely enough I can't find it online at all. You'd think Sega would put Episode 1 up for viewing or at least Cartoon Network would.
