Most of the reviews have been focusing on encore mode (you can collect all five characters and swap out, but you can't get extra lives) which doesn't really interest me.
Dang, all this new stuff for Mania is looking good. It's not quite Shovel Knight-levels of amazing DLC, but it's definitely looking substantial and fun.

That was really well made. Every character had so much personality without a word of dialogue. Even snuck in some cute references to that dumb comic Hesse made back in the day.
Also yo, really sold Metal Sonic as an actual threat! It's been so long...
On Steam I just went to the store page and bought the Encore DLC and that was it.
With Ray I really got to break the 20+ Year habit of gliding into things that Knuckles taught me, since Ray gets hurt if you do that. Fortunately with Ray if you cancel the glide he'll instantly roll back into a ball.

I guess the Steam page was screwy when I first checked, got the Encore edition last night. I didn't realize Encore was a new mode. I didn't try it first hand but I watched a couple people stream it. I tried regular ol' Mania mode with Mighty. He can't use shield powers but I like the down-slam.
I'm really enjoying Encore mode so far. I can't believe it took this long for a Sonic game to hit upon switching characters during a level to use their different powers. (I know Sonic Heroes did it first, but it was a lot more limited.) Being able to just switch to someone like Tails or Ray when you see an out of reach ledge gives you a lot more incentive to explore the levels.
If we ever get a sequel or follow up to Mania, I want them to add more characters to the mix.

It seems like a fully realised version of Knuckles Chaotix from the 32X, the game which Mighty appeared in. There you picked two characters with different abilities, and they were tethered together. It wasn't very good! ;P
There's also a reference to it later on
the new Metal Sonic fight features it's form from Chaotix.
I got started on Mania Plus - I waited until the physical release and the artbook's pretty nice. So far I'm up to Studiopolis with one Emerald. . . those special stages can be pretty unforgiving, especially with the lack of mercy invincibility when running into spikes, followed by more spikes (which happened to me twice).
I don't know if this is a spoiler or anything, but the sudden shift to Puyo-Pu. . . oh, excuse me, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine at the end of Chemical Plant was perfect. I love the developers already.
A lot of people (like me) have just pretty much given up on all the special stages. I can't get the second emerald for the life of me.
I'm super, super happy they went back and made the Hydrocity Robotnik boss much less obnoxious. The last Oil Ocean boss seems more manageable too. On the other hand, I haven't yet figured out how to fight the new Metal Sonic without getting stuck behind him and (usually) falling into a pit.
??
Old Hydrocity boss was easy.
You just engaged Super Sonic and got sucked up :rotate:
Not that one. The one where you're trapped in an underwater current with Robotnik on your ass in a propeller submarine and if you didn't steer him so that every single pot hits the cap of the propeller and release an air bubble, you die.
Now if the pot hits any part of the propeller, it counts.

I don't think I played that one normally?
Or at least in Sonic Mania I don't recall having to breathe.

You have to upgrade. Boot the game and there should be DLC listing in the main menu. I'm assuming this will apply to Switch and stuff also.
With my Switch game I had to download a patch first.

Having so much fun with it!

Nathan Barnatt, aka Keith Apicary, who nailed it. I wonder if the more physical stuff was ad-libbed.
