Yeah, the updating while sleeping will be a vast improvement from the current situation. I love my PS3, but fuck me it gets annoying when almost every time I want to play (I need to play more games as opposed to watching movies with it) there's an update for something that wants downloading in the foreground...
Do you have Playstation Plus? Because one of it's highly underrated features is that it gives you the ability to have your console turn on in the middle of the night, download updates and patches, and turn back off.
Yes that's a feature that should just be native to the system but eh, it's an imperfect world.
I want to know what magic allows me to play a game while it's still downloading
This and the Gaikai stuff is what I'm most skeptical about I think.
Just going by the speeds that I get on my PS3 when downloading or streaming, I can't imagine things like this working as advertised. If they DO work like they say, it'll be pretty great, but it's just hard to believe right now.
I didn't watch any conference footage, because PR spectacle gives me a goddang headache. Just read a few bullet-pointed summaries.
With each progressive "social" feature, I was cringing harder and harder. I think this might be the console generation where gaming leaves me behind - I don't want my console downloading things my friends like, don't want my console downloading shit it predicts I'll like, don't want to stream or watch streams, don't want friends to just pop in and watch me play, don't want motion controls. It's a list of features I'm not only uninterested in; it's a list of features I would actively despise.
I'm sure you'll be able to turn a lot of that shit off, but buying a console at launch when the feature list is mostly things I loathe seems profoundly silly.
Shame I won't be able to play Watch Dogs, but one game ain't worth a whole console.
Oh, also, fuck David Cage. The Great Train Robbery owns.
I actually tend to hate hardware announcements, or at the very least find them incredibly boring, because they don't really seem interested in telling you how their machine will help make games better or more fun, but rather their agenda to sell more consoles based on whatever's hot (it was social networking last generation, this one it's streaming and sharing etc)

I...
I may be halfway through disassembling my PS3.
Girl's 5 years old (nearly 6!), she needs a dust out and a re-paste. Also, I went in intending to find out exactly which model wifi/blootoot daughterboard I needed to replace mine because my controllers don't like registering/drop out fairly often/my BluRay remote has never worked right. Turns out the big ribbon cable that goes to the daughterboard was inserted but did not have the keeper clip snapped down. The cable has just been loosely sitting in there for 5 fucking years.
I gotta just sneer at all this streaming stuff
I have decent internet, not great but I live in an urban area and have a pretty solid connection, and the sony conference stream itself was stuttering at points
game-streaming isn't going to go anywhere unless it is smooth as butter, and I'm skeptical that the infrastructure is widespread enough to support that at the moment

There's only one thing that will get me to plunk down the bones for the PS4; Kingdom Hearts 3 with a Marvel AND Star Wars level. And maybe Pixar so I can see the Incredibles team up with the Fantastic Four.
I want to know what magic allows me to play a game while it's still downloading
What I'm assuming is that it's based on the same tech that allows you to start playing a game as it's installing on the computer? I don't understand the guts of the process but it doesn't seem like a totally impossible idea.

What game allows this on a computer?
Aside from WoW, which doesn't really count cause it's just updating already existing assets.

This, only I would be more than content with just KH3.

I would imagine they would simply setup priority files for the game and once you reach, say, ten percent, it would start playing and just be loading assets in the background. Like setting priority in a large torrent file

I don't know specific examples but they've been mentioning it on Giant Bomb lately, I'm sure someone around knows.
@Rock Lobster! nope nope nope Nintendo has always had the best D pads.

There is no good reason for them not to put in a Marvel and Star Wars level in KH3. They have the licenses, they need to use them for awesome things.
I'M NOT FINISHED WITH YOU!!!

I could see streaming games working in Japan, which is rumored to have blazing fast internet almost everywhere, but there is no way that will work in the US.
This Deep Down thing looks like a hybrid of Dark Souls and Dragon's Dogma
The BC thing is bumming me out.
But here's a thought, a lot of the stuff on the PS3 was also available on 360 or PC. So wouldn't there be x86 compatible versions ready for relatively easy PS4 porting?
Of course that would come down to the publishers or Sony thinking it would be worth the effort.

And it isn't.
Especially not when they can just do an HD re-release

World of Warcraft, Diablo 3, and Rift all have 'streaming clients' I believe is the technical term.

Fuckin what?. The dual shock has had the best d-pad of all the consoles since like... always.

I'm sure Gamestop will give you at least 25 bucks for it once the PS4 is released.
because they actually have that shit patented

Xbox is the one that sucks.

It's okay, the ps4 isn't backwards compatible so you will still need your ps3.

controlling a character with that d pad is cruel

You youngins with your soft thumbs. Mine are still hard as a rock from ps1.
you will absolutely want to wait to get a ps4 or xbox new console that isn't named yet.
edit: and by that I mean wait until it's out for a while before you purchase it.

yeah the only reason to jump in right away is if you really like the launch titles and can't wait
the new generation will most likely start 2014 for me, not 2013
