i like the MGS games because they're so unflinchingly earnest about the totally insane world that Kojima has built
see kojima's particular brand of wacky does nothing for me. i don't find it entertaining at all
and i absolutely hate the gameplay in every single one i've played so
see i don't feel like "wacky" is the word i would use to describe Kojima's stuff
it's all very absurd and bizarre and convoluted but it's all played completely straight and (most of the time) not at all for comedic value - i mean there are a few exceptions (MGR gets goofy as fuck at the very end but even then it's not really played for laughs)
that's just how things are in this universe and i love it, it's auteur as fuck
The style of the metal gear games is never gonna appeal to a ton of people
Kojima can never decide if he wants to tackle serious geopolitical issues or if he wants to show you robot ninjas suplexing nuclear mechs, and he can never decide if he wants the tone to be serious or self-parody. So he just... does all of that, all at once. He makes games about issues that you really don't see anywhere else but everything is so ham handed that it comes off as making fun if itself but then on the other hand the points that he's beating you over the head with are generally pretty valid. The metal gear games exist in such a weird crazy place that most people are just gonna be like what the fuck am I even looking at.
Ya, the NK trip is why I bought a subscription and it was worth every penny. I think everyone, regardless of GiantBomb fanhood, owes it to themselves to listen to it
I'd rather talk about the mass effect 3 ending than mgs why don't you guys just make a metal gear solid thread this thread is all about me and what I want
I'm with Vann, honestly. I played MGS 2 yeaaaars ago and liked it but then any other MGS game I have tried has been like nails on a chalkboard to me. I even tried playing MGS2 again and nope.
I get why other people dig it, but it is such a fucking weird and insane universe and series that if you can't see why people wouldnt enjoy it you a goose.
it goes You Know My Name/Skyfall, then Snake Eater
casino royale's intro was better too, i think
...you know my name is the casino royale song....

I think the MGS games are a mixture of Kojima being incredibly astute at predicting world trends in politics and technology, insane, and being forced to work on these games for so long by Konami that it feeds back into the insane part.

But god help me I love them so so much.
metal gear rising is in part a game about how the first world exploits the third world for profit and doesn't give a shit how many people are killed in the process
it is also a game where you fight and then befriend a robot dog with a chainsaw strapped to its back.

I'm finally getting around the playing Binary Domain.
This game is super dumb, but I'm liking it. It also has one of the best late title cards in a game I've played.
The dialogue mechanic is fucking terrible though. I have no idea what the reaction is going to be to the choices I have.
"Where you expecting this Dan?"
"Sure." "Damn." "Love you"
What?
BIG BO!
big bo is the best
get the aug that increases the ease/frequency of people liking you and then proceed to shoot the fuck out of everything, you should get 2 or 3 compliments from your squad per pitched gun battle
just watch out for them strafing in front of you for no reason
also maybe somebody in here can confirm/deny: if i replay binary domain can i change the story at all in like a mass effect kinda way or is it all pretty much locked in

That sounds awesome and I will gladly watch it. Is there a date/link?
Still wondering how the Video Buddy app works. It says I can download videos directly, but...I don't know how to do that.
I'm also wondering if the site itself lets you favorite/queue videos, which would also be a handy feature.

like the reason that Metal Gear REX is supposed to be so terrifying is that it's a mobile platform for launching ICBMs.
but if it's designed for launching ICBMs then why is it equipped to fight shit at close range. ICBMs are supposed to be fired from, you know, like, a continent away from the enemy
and really the only part of REX that is needed for the ICBM firing is the rail gun
wouldn't slapping that sucker onto like, a truck, make way more sense for that purpose
i mean you know whatever it's all just a big excuse to have a Giant Fighting Robot in the game, but the games never really justified Metal Gear making all that much sense as a weapon

I believe they mentioned that the terrorists outfitted REX with weapons it wasn't meant to originally have in order to take out close-quarter oppositions.
Either way it does make sense for the thing to be able to defend itself, if anyone gets in close to try and destroy it.
Why it roars is a whole other story. Deterrence through fear I guess?
iirc REX was also designed to be a completely paradigm-shifting threat
it was built to be a weapon that the global community could not ignore because of how game-changing it was; it was a mobile ICBM-launching platform that could not be detected by radar and circumvented anti-proliferation treaties by bypassing the "ballistic" part of "intercontinental ballistic missile"
beyond just being a weapon, it was meant to change the face of warfare completely
yeah but all of that stuff is true because of the railgun and not the giant fighting robot it's attached to
though in fairness i did forget that it was otacon that made the thing so of course it's a god damn giant fighting robot
my headcanon is now that he convinced the rest of ArmsTech that the giant fighting robot part of metal gear was somehow crucial to its ability to move and have a railgun attached to it for reasons that were "too technical for him to explain"

Yes, and he came back with tons of pictures. It's unreal, and actually hilarious because of Ryan
But denying the greatness of the Snake Eater theme song is just crazy talk
But saying it is better than the best Bond intro is also crazy talk.

oh, i thought the way you listed it that was an alternate title for skyfall
i don't know those themes by song title, i just know the intros collectively, visuals/song combined

You Know My Name doesn't do it for me, but I can Agree with Skyfall.
I'm pretty sure most of it is

Fuck, do I love how insane it is
Yes I appreciate the existence of MGS as a thing I don't actively participate in
I enjoy hearing about it

Otacon had designed REX to shoot down enemy ICBMs, not fire its own
