...What have you done, Photoshop? What have you done!?

Folks, I was dicking around in Illustrator and Photoshop, just doing a mock-up of a cover, and I accidentally dropped / caught my keyboard after I nearly finished in Photoshop. I must've hit a keyboard shortcut for a filter - my drawing went from:

To:

Personally, I like this accident. But I have no idea how it happened.

Does anyone know what Filter this is (assuming it is a filter)?

Are... are you sure you didn't just darken the background layer?

I'm pretty sure; I mean, I just grabbed some random buttons on the keyboard and 'pop', that happened.

It's like it tried to parse / exaggerate the gradients in the background or something. Or maybe limit the colors?

Looks very similar to posterisation, which will be located in a different category, depending on your version of Photoshop. In CS6 I have it under Filter->Filter Gallery->Artistic.

Yes, you posterized your background layer.

In the future, check the history window. It shows step by step what has been done.

Folks, I don't know which one I like more.

    Which do you like more?

The fewer obvious Photoshop filters you use on shitty art, the better it tends to look. At least, I know that every time I see that fucking posterize filter I feel a little nauseas.

I don't really agree that it's 'shitty', but I'm certainly not a professional artist like most of the folks in the Artist Corner here. At any rate, thanks (I normally agree about filters, but for whatever reason I found that result striking).

I like the burning background in the first one, it contrasts with the stark lines of the snake-robot better, it is hard to even see what it is suppose to be in the second one.

The effect might be useful if you want to take away focus from the background but as it is the background is a significant part of your image. That might actually be a problem also...
