So everything I'm seeing about this game - avoiding spoilers - is that the bullshit motion-picture-industry style wrapper it was being shown to us as is the minority of content and hid the actual game from us all. And the actual game is apparently great.
That is exactly right.
And all the rampant misogyny and implied sexual assault stuff was vastly overblown as well.

My brother's reaction to this game was pretty funny.
After seeing Lara kill somebody for the first time.
"Man...this game is brutal. Is this game rated M? It should be rated M because damn."
Every time I see Lara get impaled/get partially impaled. It's not a good thing that I'm naturally a bit very squeemish. And let's not forget the uncountable number of times she's fallen a pretty big darn distance and I pray like heck that she doesn't land on some sharp pointy outcrop or broken plank or something. Though oddly enough I'm totally OK with stabbing a mook in the knee with an arrow then following it up with another to the throat or adding a new orifice to his skull with a climbing pickaxe
I'm going to have to agree with someone's post earlier in that this is the definition of a AAA game. So much polish
This game makes me want to upgrade my video card too. I mean, I've got a 560ti which is just fine for most things. Most games I don't really care if I'm not able to put it on "ultimate" settings or whatever. But the absolutely every bit of this game makes me want to be on ultra max super ultimate settings. I can only muster "high" settings and it's still great, but those 2 fps of maxed out graphics look fantastic, if otherwise unplayable.
But I can't afford any upgrades right now! Waaaaaaa!

So this scene with this helicopter elicited the following reactions in me:
1. CPR DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY
2. That axe totally would not have killed a dude that just escaped a helicopter crash unscathed.
3. So, like, Mathias? You just threw an axe at a dude and ran off? Didn't even wait to see if it killed him? You're like 5 feet away. You had buddies and everything. There's like 5 guns next to you. Nobody's even paying attention to you anymore. You are the worst Evil Locke.
Also, when I made that Evil Locke joke earlier, I did not actually expect the thoroughness with which this has become offbrand Lost.

Thank fucking god.
I have heard one criticism of the game that seems legit - this is supposed to be the backstory of how Lara Croft learns to do what she does. Only I guess in the game there's no transition for any of that shit thematically. Which is a problem that's all over the fucking industry, but y'know, it's still a problem.
At any rate I want this. Probably on my PC so I can dig me some sweet new hair technology.
When I love a game as much as I love this one, and I see all these reviews nitpicking the hell out of it, that really bugs me, Ali can say is, just buy the game, chances are you'll love it too. All this Lara character stuff that people are complaining about, it works for me, I have no problems with it.

Incidentally, Jonah was my favourite character (barring Lara herself).
So glad he survived. I was worried it was going to be "everybody but Sam dies so Lara is just like CAN'T LOSE YOU TOO".

Early on, yeah, it's kind of a thing, but that's mostly just an oddity of the gameplay. Individual dudes are fairly easy to kill, so you're going through a fair number of them, but it would've just been annoying if like Lara's aim was complete shit at first or something. And the gameplay unlocking more and more vicious moves as Lara becomes more hardened actually supports the story, as well as Lara's lines during combat.
(It does kinda seem like at some point the early game was going to be a bit more survival-y, with just hunting and climbing and fire building, etc and then they decided at some point to throw in more combat)
But really I feel like it's more one of those things where so much of the game is done so well that a lot of reviewers are stuck finding things to quibble with, which means there's a lot of ink getting spent on the same thing. That's less a sign of how big a problem that quibble is and more a sign of how good everything else is.

Interestingly, looking at it, I think the exp system worked fairly well in forcing me not to take the optimal route. I probably would've used the pistol 100% of the time without it, and that might've made combat a lot less interesting.

Laura dying horribly is kind of a requirement. It has been there since the original. Really, it adds to the danger.

If anything the game does a damn good job establishing that Lara being a badass has nothing to do with her sex, not even in a cloyingly "woo girls!" kind of way. Nor does the game ever pull any, "Wow Lara, for a girl you sure are tough like a man!" kind of bullshit either. I'm shocked to say it for a game starring Lara Croft, but her character is not defined by her sex.

She wasn't defined by her sex in either of the previous CD games either, but people have been glossing over these facts to keep talking about how sexist the franchise is because of TR 2-4 for ever and don't have much inclination to change.
So I just started this game. I like it a lot! My biggest complaint is that when I equip the pistol the bow disappears off her back. I guess if that's the largest problem I've encountered then your game is doing pretty well.

So annoying! I understand the shotgun and AR not being shown all the time but the bow is used more often. Seems expecially odd considering that you get more pouches and additional things like the archery hand wrap as you upgrade.
Really minor thing though, love the game overall. Maybe it's because I've never played an Uncharted but even though a lot of the time you're only pressing in a single direction the spectacle is really amazing.
I think I'm pretty far into the game but so far I've only been to two tombs. Have I missed a bunch or do some of them open up after you finish the main story?
Also, how much do I have left? Because I'm not sure I want to be so close to the endgame.
There are two tombs in the Shanty Town? Fuck me it felt like I've looked through every inch of that place and I've only found one.
Personally, open world games usually don't draw me back after I'm done with the main story, so most of this stuff will have to wait until another playthrough.
Please tell me I am not the only one that yelled at the screen when she successfully lit a campfire using *clearly* wet wood/brush :P
But yes, this game is super fun. I was up until 4:30am playing it and now I am tired
I sat there going "please let this work please let this work please let this work
please let this work"
Then I held my breath when she took out her only match...
I expected the match striking/lighting of the fire to be a QTE. Seriously though, I like the game. I will hate QTE for all time though. I played 'Simon' as a child. Don't want to play it anymore.
That would be the most depressing QTE failure - match goes out, scene of Lara slowly dying of exposure.
After reasoning with myself that the giant stack of games my wife and I own and haven't started, or are already in the middle of playing should deter us from picking this up, we managed to make it one day before deciding we just had to go buy it anyway.
It's so good. It's like uncharted with more fun collectibles and better combat at least early on. I'm loving taking fools out with my bow.
The game is great, but it insists on doing a lot of the playing for you, in case you do it wrong.
Weird he complains about QTE's... but all the QTE's in this are just a representation of what the button does anyway. If the QTE involves attacking, you hit Y (360 pad).... which is your melee attack anyway. If its a rope zipline you hit B to drop down, which is what the button does anyway. Same with A being jump and the QTE having a jump.
I really don't see why he has such a HUGE issue with the game being cinematic with this type of QTE. Its not like random QTE's where you have to watch closely for what button to push randomly and that causes you to not have time to look at the action itself.
Just sounds like the guy is exaggerating things because it has some cinematic action sequences that are mainly meant to "look cool". He also complains that the current objective stops you from exploring?? My entire playthrough involved going the opposite way of the objective in order to explore every part I could. I really liked that the objective marker is there, so I know where not to go if I wanted to find tombs and extra goodies in the current area.
The shotgun's pretty cool. Suffers from lame short range problems that game devs just love to saddle their shotguns with. Full Choke doesn't help much either. I can't bestow upon it that status of "Fucking Boss" but I can give it a ranking of "P. Baller"
I reached that 70% story mark last night. I thought I was at the end of the game! I mean... that shit was end game tense and quality. And then I was like "... There's more?!"
Spoilers for up to the helicopter scene
I totally called Roth dying way earlier in the game when I saw him using those dual pistols. Because those are Lara's pistols, and how else was she going to get them?

She isn't using em though. I thought the same thing, but nope.
Really cool game. My wife was enthralled. "I think I kinda really want to play this..."
Although, I see what the Giant Bomb guys were talking about, about really digging it while playing, but once you stop, the glow is gone.
I mean, it's fun, but as soon as I stopped last night, I didn't think about it at all. Usually, if a game gets it's hooks in me, I'll stay up late, forgo any TV, whatever. I was OK stopping and just playing some more tonight. Part of it might be the dichotomy between cutscenes and gameplay. It's as bad as everyone says, but I think it's a personal thing. If that bothers you, like it does me, so be it. If not, I don't think you're an asshole or anything. I mean, yeah, it's a video game. You're supposed to jack guys up. It bugs me, but mostly I'm just laughing at it and making fun of it. Also, it's VERY Uncharted, for good or ill.
All in all, though, it's cool and one hell of a reboot and I hope it sells gangbusters so they can take a bit more of a chance with the sequel and make it a bit crazier and less...streamlined and rollercoaster.
Man. The attention to detail in some of her animations is so great.
For example, if you have the torch out when you go to pry open a box, she will actually set the torch on the ground while she prys and then pick it up when she's done.

Yeah, the people in charge of the animation in this game deserve a friggin' bonus. I like all the little things that Lara does - how her pace changes depending on the quality and incline of the terrain, the way that she braces her arm against a wall as she creeps along a cave, the way that she looks around and over her shoulder with that "did I just hear something look" - all these things make the game feel more immersive, doing a job above and beyond the standard idle animaiton pose that most games utilize.
Also, Lara Croft has the strongest bones/internal organs ever... Poor lady keeps getting impaled in that same spot too! It's like when you stub your toe, or hurt a finger. You always seem to hit that spot from then on... one of my biggest moments so far has been on a... water slide
I went left when I shoulda gone right. Lara was impaled on a spike right through her chin. Fuckin... ouch, man.
Also also, two of my favorite Lara quotes from the game are, early and mid game super mild spoilers
The very first thing she says after waking up in the cave. "This is going to hurt." I had to laugh at that... from all the trailers and stuff, it was like Oh Lara... you have no idea.
Then, I think it was in the monestary, I got a good chuckle when she says "I hate tombs...". Get used to it, Lara!
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
One little thing I noticed early on is if she runs alongside a wall, she'll reach out with her hand tracing her fingers along the wall as she runs. Some of it gets a little wobbly in transitions from jumping, landing and hitting walls, but it never was so bad that I groaned about it.
I really like the dialogue you get between Lara and the cultists. Spoilers for right after you get the Shotgun.
When you land in the monastery, one of them yells out "Don't Shoot!" and if you don't attack them, there's a short exchange about how all of you have to get out of there or the Guardians are going to kill everybody, and lara will ask "what do you mean guardians" and want an explanation before one of the other guys just yells "we dont have time for this just kill her"
Another awesome thing that happened last night! Spoiler up to the 70% mark/Helicopter scene
In the geothermal caverns, in the room where your friends are being held. There were the three guards. I waited for them to separate from eachother a bit, and popped up with a bow headshot on the furthest one. The other two noticed, and one rushed me. Monkey scramble out of cover into pocket sand on the guy, wail on him with the axe, and finish him off with an axe to the dome. Third guy come reeling around the corner, and tries to hit me with the butt of his shotgun. Dodge, arrow stab in the knee, and then brained him with my axe.
Cue cutscene with all her friends clapping "Lara... that was awesome!"
and I'm sitting there: "... Fuck yeah it was!"
I love how sloppy, but brutally effective Lara's fighting style is. Unlike Nathan Drake, who just fights dudes, Lara is in the process of learning how to fight, and just trying not to die. It's so great, like she's a real person, and not just Invincible McActionpants.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
