Just 100% 2013 Tomb Raider DE (I said I'd do it by god, and I did--granted I played the first few hours of the sequel in the process).
So, fuck unmarked challenge finds. I don't even mind they don't mark them when you stumble upon them or locate a area map, like GPS Caches and everything else. But fuck leaving them unmarked after you find that. That's bullshit I'd be angrier about if they weren't totally optional and apparently aimed at masochists.
I've put in about 8 hours so far, and the game says I'm 25% done. Really enjoying it so far. I'm not sure exactly how far into the story I am, since the completion percentage is probably more for collecting everything than story completion, but I would guess I'm maybe halfway through with it. I dunno, maybe my standards just aren't so high, but I think the story is pretty okay so far... certainly better than the first game. And I'm loving all the action set pieces and gameplay itself. Also, Tombs! And the Raiding of them!
I think Saints Row 4 was the last game I completed 100%, but I could definitely see myself going for it on this one.
Wait, people think the story in the first one was bad?
I mean, compared to the old continuity of tomb raider games, it was practically Shakespeare. And it was still pretty good on it's own.
It would actually depend on the games. Some of the old TR games have a story that is literally barely there, and accordingly subtle (Tomb Raider III comes to mind). It's practically a fig leaf of story, but if you're annoyed by overdramatic pleas and scathing moral rebukes (when they're not done well, I suppose) and the like, you won't get any of that.
I enjoyed the story in the very first one, even while I was so utterly dazzled by my Monster3D card running it. I don't much remember the others, to be honest. Weren't there killer plants and stuff in Angel of Darkness?
As a player of every Tomb Raider game and lover of most of them, the only game whose plot I enjoyed was Legend
And then they didn't stick the landing with Underworld

This came in the mail for me last night, and I had a good laugh because I thought they were sending some kind of special steelbook edition. But I opened up the package and all they did was they sent the game in its regular Xbox One box and sent an extra empty steelbook case to go with
Anyway, thoughts so far on the first hour or two:
Holy shit are them cutscenes in real time? Because fucking hell those face cap and mocap animations are fantastic. Luddington knocking it out of the park with her performance. They play out like a slightly over-acted TV-drama, which for me is perfect. :P
DEFORMING SNOW
Also, the input lag is definitely irritating, but I'll just have to get used to it.
I've just come across my second tomb and I can't figure out how to get in it
Are there tombs you come across that you can't access until you're better equipped?
Pretty sure this is the case. I came across one early on that, as far as I could see, needed flame arrows to melt some ice on a particular doo-dad to progress. Since I'm 8 hours in and still have not unlocked said fire arrows yet, that one is still on my radar to go back to.

Are you talking about the tomb where the door weight is trapped in ice? The solution doesn't require fire arrows.
So far I have done every tomb that I have access to and the only unlock that any of them has required is the rope arrows. In my experience if you can make it into a tomb you can solve it.

Really.
Hmm. I will have to go back and look at this one. I didn't spend much time on it because of the (apparently wrong) assumption that I'd need the fire arrows to complete it. Looks like I need to be more perceptive!
Audio logs aren't an acceptable form of storytelling.
It can be beautiful when done right. Lost Odyssey has the best.
LO's stories were beautiful, but wholly disconnected from the rest of the game, and the writing in them made the rest of the game's writing look terrible by comparison.

Lost Odyssey was amazing and thoroughly depressing and is probably one of the only games in which I'm okay with a minigame being a funeral ceremony
Also, re: audio logs, I'm quite happy with the ones in RotTR so far. Some of them are really helping to build the world that's being presented. The one in the cistern tomb in Siberia is even a little affecting (the records of the Remnant working there and the Foreman). The majority I've seen so far are non-essential to the main plot.
That is the most blatant PR speak I have ever read. And it really suggests that the game has sold poorly, because they are doing the same thing they were doing when talking about Xbone sales and *avoiding* it.
"Are you happy with the games sales?"
With a response of
"We are happy with the games feedback and reception"
Does not bode well at all for the future of this series. Like we're talking about a publisher declaring a game that sold millions in a week a flop. If Neogafs insiders are right, this was ~500k in the first week and dropped off into nowhere after (dat Fallout 4 effect).

They're happy with the studio and the game; they're no commenting on the sales.

That's utterly beyond dreadful.
I don't know about anywhere else but its first week in the UK it sold 48,000 copies on the XB1 and 15,000 on the 360 supposedly. Granted it did release on Friday.
Releasing the same week as Fallout 4, probably didn't help much either.
Considering the response to the appropriate parties would only be "you could have sold this many more if you sold it on my console too" or something to that effect, I'm not surprised that they—as in the people whom sales are within their domain to speak upon—aren't saying anything. Because yes, you can put more water in two jugs instead of one and such.

I'm hoping it will have legs like the first one did, especially once it comes out on PC. It's really a great game that deserves more follow-ups.

If Square weren't willing to play the long game with this series, they wouldn't have gotten Microsoft to bankroll exclusivity for it in the first place.
I'd wait at least until the PC release before we call it the doom of the franchise.
Did it get lower than expected sales considering the exclusivity?
No I don't.

It crested number 4 on the UK charts, which seems to be the most commonly-reported statistic? Against multiplat blockbusters like Call of Duty and Fallout 4, which honestly seemed pretty much expected regardless of exclusivity
Honestly, in hindsight staggering its release puts it out of the way of this period of ridiculously intense competition. Even if it had released simultaneously on all platforms, the fact that it launched at the same time as these massive year-defining titles would have hurt it a lot either way.
Well it earned that No.4 spot with just 48,000 units sold on the XB1 for that time period, which again, was just Friday and maybe Saturday and Sunday depending on what they count for a "week".
Thinknthat relly was abpiece of God's soul? I'm not really sure what the Divine Source was, tbh. I did find it interesting that the Storm guard and the Deathless Ones have opposite relationships with their creators.
My wife picked this up for when Amazon had it on sale. Only played a little bit past the first part but it's fun feels a lot like the first game which great first game was super fun and if it ain't broke don't fix it!
Though I'm confused on these cards and such that I got? Like what in the huh?
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

those are used in the time-attack style level replay mode to modify the difficulty. they have exactly 0 impact on the story mode.
I enjoyed the hell outta the previous game (I liked it so much I'm kind of ashamed I didn't get it until I got it for free through Games with Gold). But I'm really hoping that my wife got the hint when I started drooling every time I saw a commercial for the newest one, and I get this new one for Christmas.
But what I'm really in here to say is that I got GoL through Games with Gold a good while back too, and my 5yo son and I have just stared playing through in co-op. And it's the greatest thing ever. Up until now we've mostly just played the Lego games, so I'm super happy to finally be playing a big-boy game with him. The co-op mechanics so far have been a blast and he's getting to the point where sometime I don't even have to tell him what I need him to do.
That makes sense. Shame that Unlocked some cool outfits from there. Well I won't have to worry about ruining the story then.
except for the pre-order exclusives, all the costumes you unlock from cards also show up over the course of the story. (or as unlocks for completing challenges or whatever)
They seem to have dropped the gradual clothing damage from the first game to simply having Lara change clothes at key points in the story. The nice thing is you can swap to any of the unlocked ones at a campfire.

It would be very cool if a game that featured clothing damage as the story progressed translated said damage onto alternate outfits too.

Yeah I did notice I could swap to Laura's bad ass leather jacket, but seeing as I'm still in the frozen area that seemed unwise.

Why?
If my T-shirt got messed up, why would my collared shirt also be messed up?

Jacob himself said all the religion stuff was false and he had no idea what it was or where it came from. He basically founded a religion to protect the world from it, once he realized his mistake.

Do her animations changed appropriately for her current clothing and environmental conditions? Because that'd be pretty cool. It'd probably be annoying if it had any gameplay effect, but like if you put her in her warm weather cloths while she's running around in the snow she should be shivering and wrapping her arms around herself trying to keep warm. It'd be a nice bit of immersiveness .

haha, well yes... that would be silly.
But what if say... a bear claws your shirt up in a cutscene and for the remainder of the game your default shirt has claw tears, wouldn't it be neat if you started the game wearing the alternate outfit and it too was damaged from the same event? Things like that.

I'm assuming those numbers also don't account for digital sales.
It's not saving it. NPD came out today and it failed to chart in the top 10. There is no other valid conclusion than the sales being an unmitigated disaster.
That's probably it for Tomb Raider as a franchise knowing how stupid Square/Enix is. Who on earth thought this was ever a good idea?
