New motherboard - sounds cuts out randomly

TPSouTPSou MrRegistered User regular
Hi I'm currently using my Windows 8 PC plugged into an LG tv.

A while ago I picked up a new motherboard, GPU, PSU and SSD, and since then sound in Youtube videos and some games (Bit Trip Runner) cuts out every now and then for a second or so, then carries on fine.

Any ideas on how to fix this? The motherboard is an asus p8z77-v lx and the drivers for it seem to have installed the Realtek HD audio manager.

I would try installing different codecs. Here is a codec pack for Windows 8: http://download.cnet.com/Windows-8-Codecs-Pack/3000-13632_4-75754340.html

The Realtek ones may not be working if they aren't Win8 supported.

Didn't fix the issue, thanks for the link though, probably a useful thing to have anyway.

The only time I've had sound cut out when using a TV connected to a PC, is when the HDMI cable is bad or going bad. Give that a shot.

If not, try putting on some headphones and seeing if it still occurs. That will let you know if it's the cable or the computer.

It seems to have gone away mostly, it happened twice last night while watching a trailer but other than that it's fine, didn't change a thing.

Check the AC'97 adapter on the motherboard? Maybe it's loose?

This is still happening, very intermittent, sometimes a restart seems to fix it, sometimes it doesn't. Any new ideas for me to fix?

How do I know which part is the ac 97 adapter?

You'll have to dig into the motherboard manual to find the little cable. It's very small and annoying, but if it's loose it would cut in and out, but that is really just a hail Mary play.

Cheers, I had a look around and checked everything I could find but still not luck, right now it's fine again. It seemed to start when I changed motherboard so I'm assuming it's something to do with that. It also happens way more on videos and hardly ever on games

Does the sound pause and resume or is the sound just cutting out and coming back.

For example if someone was reading "When the moose walked up the hill" in the video does it play the entire line or do you get "When the *bzzt* walked up the hill"?

it's just like a little blip of silence. It would sound as " when the ..... up the hill"

Just to check when you installed the new motherboard did you do a windows re-install or at least a repair?

Little annoying problems like this and one of the things that can happen when you swap a mainboard without a windows reinstall.

So that would be something I would try to do.

Did a complete clean install of windows for this motherboard

I have the same type of issue, though it's the display that's the problem. Any audio from any device coming out gets clipped at regular intervals, whether through hdmi or 1/8" headphone jack. I'm wondering if the signal is just too strong (like, amped), but I've never found a setting or combination that didn't do it. So probably not the same as your issue, but maybe check the levels in your mixer for whatever audio device you're using (I'm guessing it's the GPU doing the HDMI out, so start there) and disable any "enhancements" that may be running.
