A lot of his 'suggestions' and 'hints' about traffic models are actually him talking about the 'right' way to zone. This doesn't actually fix, or explain the demented and awful traffic AI. Its how to avoid it, by doing extremely precise things. Seems like the game 'wants' you to do things a certain way. You can't have interconnections of street cars. Yeah, last time I was in San Fran, that caused some serious problems. Woo! Do it the way that works, or else it blows up! Now that's some sandbox gameplay.
This was one of the exchanges:
In the meantime, bulldoze the high tech factories that are near your nuclear power plant. One of them is causing all those cars on the road to not go back home or leave the city (it's a high-density one, "Picton Polygons & Pixels").
Can I ask how we know that about the factory? Is that something I could have been able to determine?
I have magical debugging powers. You have 1,500 cars that are trying to reach it, and they won't all fit in it.
Ummm. That seems broken to me.
That sounds beyond broken, that comes across as broken to the point that he's given up even trying to fix it.

I am getting so sick of the Recycling Plant breaking. Talking with @Delphinidaes I think I agree with him that it's something involving recycling capping out that breaks the processors. Like, the thing that feeds recyclables jams or some shit and won't process any more, powering on and off, quitting game doesn't seem to do it.
Next thing I might try is temporarily swapping Alloy back and forth to Metal when they break.

At this point I'm starting to get the impression that there are only two major bugs at this point, AI path-finding bugs, and "X stopped working for no reason and won't start working again whatever I do". Unfortunately, they're both pretty much game-breakers.

Arcadia Delta #1 Progress Update: @BillGates and I managed to provide all the resources to the Arcology (stole 4k extra of my TVs, the jerk...although, in payment, it gave us a bunch of free credit for Alloy seemingly). It's on Phase 2 of construction, provide 300 workers to it to build and watch the % ticker go up, we quit out before it finished.
I have a University down w/ Schools of Law and Medicine to cover the holes. Detective research was in progress when I left, I can do the Surgical one afterwards. I have the upgrade for the third school, haven't placed yet. On request, I can complete the rest of the Science/Engineering researches in piecemeal with add/delete using my third slot.
There's a patch going out -- I don't know what's in it, but my launcher's processing something.
EDIT:
General
Fix for a crash related to the highway interchanges and vehicles.
Traffic was optimized for complex road sections.
Fix for a specific case of city processing that forced players to rollback their cities to a previous state.
Fix for a crash some players saw when exiting their city.
Rapidly clicking or accidently double clicking the Claim city button will no longer create multiple regions.
We temporarily removed filtering by friends and maps on the Join Game screen to better support database performance. Players can still find friends' regions by going to their friends' profile pages.
Servers
Various database optimization to address issues with connecting to our servers
We added 8 additional servers!
My friend is too busy playing to look it up and I don't even have the game yet and can't find it on google: How do you know what type of worker a building needs?
As far as I can tell, for individual buildings, you don't.
However, you can find what that building class needs for full work. You can then compare that to your "unfilled jobs" numbers and make an educated guess. If you have multiple classes missing, it's probably whatever resident class isn't nearby to that building.
quoting this because the link he posted was really fucking useful for figuring out how some of the simcity systems work.
The Empire State is comercial iirc, there's a residential one in there as well.
The Sydney Opera house acts like an Expo Centre. Also I think some don't do anything but pull in tourists?

Need to start adding more Maxis humour items now. Like a "Dino Rampage" event for the Pro stadium that occasionally unleashes a Giant Lizard disaster if the atendance is poor.
My highest population yet....
Edit: actually just hit 292k for the city hall upgrade... now it says 600k, is that even possible?
So how are you dealing with water use and sewage at such a high population? I'm at 210k and I'm sucking the water basin dry.
I have 2 pumping stations maxed out on water filtration pumps. You also have to turn off the "basic pump" that is on a pumping station, go to edit mode and it lets you specifically turn off individual pumps from there.... of course make sure you dont click the entire pumping station, just the basic pump that it comes with.
Sewage... I dunno, I just have the 1 plant thing maxed out on the addons. I think my neighbor city handles some of it.
I got up to 300k people on that city, I'm not really sure how someone gets the 600k for the top city hall upgrade. I tend to expand fast and little problems snowball... I have TONS of sick people, so there are regularly abandoned buildings due to it, so my population has pretty much halted.
Willis building is a commercial building. Also, I did not search the whole thread cause I'm super lazy and just got the game, but I've found that SimCity likes to play Hotel California with your tourists sometimes. Keep an eye on your tourism map and if you see a hotel fill up and never empty, you'll have to bulldoze it to free the Tourists to keep spending money in your city.

@Badwrong: Are you aware that you can bulldoze the default expansion module and replace it with one of the "advanced" versions? For pretty much anything that comes with a built-in module at that.

Oh cool, didnt know that. Before I knew to at least turn it off, my city was extremely sick from that one stupid pump.
Also, I don't know what was up, but I had like 50 municipal buses in my town causing all the goddamn traffic on my main artery last night.
I've been seeing a lot more u-turning today -- buses especially, but that's to be expected, as all of my stops in that are were on one side of the road.
What really weirded me out was following a few cars that were going through high traffic areas that a) they absolutely could have avoided and b) they absolutely should have avoided via the 'shortest route' principle.
Instead of driving from point a (town entrance) to point b (across a bridge) in the straight line (avenue AB) one would assume, they were going
Point a -> turn right into a high traffic zone -> turn left onto a minor, high traffic street parallel to AB -> turn left onto a minor, high traffic street -> turn right back onto avenue AB -> cross bridge to destination.
I'm so happy (no sarcasm) to be talking about in-game bugs and weirdness.

It looks like I can play now, so if someone from TG#2 can send me an invite sometime, I can get to mayoring. Also, what server did we end up on?
anyone else unable to log in again atm? Made a great city this morning that I now can't access. Also for the last couple of days literally no-one joins my regions and the 'join game' menu only shows full regions, so I can't use the multiplayer features that are getting in the way of me playing.
So I don't even know at this point if Titan Gorge #1 exists, because as of last night I'm still unable to connect to US East 1. I was able to get into the Angry Dome region and it's been fun, but last night it looked as though @That_Guy had razed his city to start over, so I had to pause as he had been providing me much-needed services.
Once more I found myself trying to play on public regions, and it's just depressing as fuck. First, the search function that is supposed to find me games to join only brings up regions that are already full. If I'm both lucky and persistent, I eventually find one with an abandoned city I can try to take over. Most of the time, though, the city has been run completely into the ground with zero money, zero population, and all three bonds used up. Thanks assholes.
I eventually did find a city that hadn't been completely ruined and started building, only to notice that one of my neighbors was sending me an avalanche of crime. At first I tried helping him out by sending some police, but a short while later I noticed that the city had been abandoned, so I popped over for a visit and saw that he had systematically gone through and disconnected all the roads, destroyed the services, and left the thing to rot... ruining his city, but also attempting to ruin mine in the process. Thankfully he still had some population left, so I was able to take control of the city, raise all taxes to 20% for a last-second infusion of cash, then reconnect roads and power to get things going again. I unclaimed the city once it was functional, hopefully for a more responsible person to take over, but by that point I was just utterly depressed and quit the game.
Edit: So I was finally just able to log into US East 1, and realized I shouldn't have even bothered; the region is full of abandoned, unclaimed, or unplayed cities. Pretty much what I was suspecting given all the issues with that particular server.

My latest city is borked because recycling stopped working. Of all the things they'd attempt to fix so far, beyond making the servers work, this seems like the worst kind of bug and it's still prevalent.
Based on the crappy pathfinding for streetcars and buses, I'm toying with creating a series of routes that are NOT connected to each other. In essence, I want to create microcosms of RCI. The game's AI just makes it too difficult to design a normal looking city.
For education, does the game require you keep the grade school after you have a high school? (ignoring real life logic here)
Cause the per person cost of a high school seems better and I could save some cash if the grade school isn't needed.
I don't believe you can remove grade schools after you get a high school. I have a high school that can have 2800 students and it only gets like 1200, but I have had to put in 3 grade schools because they kept capping out at 950 each. So that makes me think that they are different. Also, I have 100% of the students in my city being taught every day, and my education level is no longer maxed. I think they changed something with the patch that causes education to go down for no reason now.

Education builds slowly. Educated Sims move out. New Sims arriving to your city start out uneducated. So having just a couple buildings bump up in density would effect your overall Education level.

I was maxed before... for a LONG time. 3 star tech and 5 star education. Since the patch it is now 2 and 4.
I'm going to log in and try a last ditch effort to save the place, but I'm already maxed out on loans, and everything went to total chaos following a bunch of disasters one after the other. It's not going to be pretty.
I wonder if the traffic fixes only effect new games?
If not, I really hope they tweak the fire truck thing, at least. Because right now I have like 8 buildings on fire from an earthquake, and all of my trucks are putting out 1.

What I love is when the firefighter adviser guy is all like "There is a hazmat fire!!!" and then 20min later a one of my 4 hazmat fire trucks FINALLY leaves the fire station... as the building is turned to rubble.
